Total ban on hoodies absolutely everywhere

To want a total ban on hooded tops? DS was mugged for 2nd time yesterday on Putney Bridge ( a huge bridge that incoporates a road and pavements) at 4pm, all members of the gang of nasty, despicable, low life, scum thieves were wearing them, grrrrrr!

mumsmilitant the decoy idea is a good one.

DS doesn't want a 'decent' phone due to mugging worries.

Sad that people can't have what they want in fear of some bugger else trying to take it from them.

Last year we were robbed. Over £150,000 of stuff was taken and we saw a person on cctv (no face covering) the police have not been able to trace the person - I can't give to many details as it could reveal my identity but DS2 summed it by saying ' why do these people thing they can just take stuff that doesn't belong to them. Don't they care how hard my dad had to work to get all them things and to make that money' The answer sadly was ' no lad, they really don't care'

upahill · 01/09/2011 16:13

Blimeymadwoman that's way to harsh.
Sounds like mumsamilitant is in shock and hugely upset.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 01/09/2011 16:13

If we all wore our hoodies with the hoods up, they would become seriously unfashionable. Like mum jeans.

Problem solved.

Although the little shits would probably turn to balaclavas or somesuch...

mumsamilitant · 01/09/2011 16:16

No it won't stop crime but it will help fight it.

sorry your son was mugged and hope he is ok, but wtf has the clothes got to do with it, both my dc's wear them and have never mugged anyone.

ravenAK · 01/09/2011 18:48

My five year old dd goes through phases of insisting on wearing a hood all day every day, usually when she's feeling a bit stressed/overwhelmed.

Can't see her as a mugger. Or for that matter, my 75 year old MIL, who 'borrowed' a Motorhead hoody from dh one chilly day to walk home & now refuses to return it! Grin

Sorry about your ds, though. The crap decoy phone might be a good idea.

worraliberty · 01/09/2011 18:49

What about winter coats with hoods?

If you ban hooded jackets, you'd have to ban hooded coats too.

HidingInTheUndergrowth · 01/09/2011 18:51

No mums, it will not help to fight crime because you will ban hoodies and they will wear coats with hoods. So you ban coats with hoods and they will wear sunglasses and hats. So you ban all sunglasses and hats so they wear scarfs they can pull up over their faces. So you ban all scarfs and.....well, surely you get the idea.

Really, what happened to your son is awful but if you had banned hoodies it would still have happened, the little bastards would have just been wearing something else.

CrosswordAddict · 01/09/2011 18:51

It's what is under the hoody that makes me feel scared Sad Seems like we need to re-program a few brains ! Wink

stripeybump · 01/09/2011 18:55

Oh please don't ban hoodies. I love my new Superdry one, it's all fleecy and cosy.

GypsyMoth · 01/09/2011 18:55

What a stupid idea........got to laugh at the idea of an item of clothing being banned though?

worraliberty · 01/09/2011 19:06

I've just thought

What would I do without my Sunday Morning hangover hoodie? Shock

Surely you wouldn't inflict me on the public?

Peachy · 01/09/2011 19:13

I hope your ds is OK

But I can't see why I should replace ds4's toddler wardrobe in almost entirety because some prats share a shape of sweater. Neither can I afford to actually.

ouryve · 01/09/2011 19:18

Sorry about your son, OP, but banning hoodies would be daft. My primary school age kids wouldn't be able to wear them, for a start.

The sort of people who wear hoodies to go incognito would find something else. When I was a kid, they wore balaclavas. In the 90s, they wore beanies. I'm sure if they came into fashion in some way, they'd wear cagouls. Banning the clothes is not the answer.

limitedperiodonly · 01/09/2011 19:20

I have a number of hoodies.

One of my favourites is Germoline pink cashmere. I guess that would make me quite identifiable.

But I agree with you OP that in the current climate they should be banned because it's turned a bit warm in the last few days.

MangoMonster · 01/09/2011 19:27

Hope your son is ok. Don't think hoodies are the cause. I wear them and I've never committed an offence in my life. They are great when it's raining and you haven't got an umbrella.

OddBoots · 01/09/2011 19:27

My ds has hoodies, he's been brought up to have the hood down (and remove any hat) indoors but that wouldn't help on the street.

ouryve · 01/09/2011 19:31

And this brings me to a bugbear of mine - why do people walk around with £200+ phones constantly on show? It's not so long ago that I remember having to be pickpocket aware, walking around the centre of Newcastle - keeping valuables close to my person, opening of handbag under my arm, etc. I see so many people walking round with expensive electronic gadgetry permanently in front of their faces or pressed to their ears, now, pretty oblivious to everything else around them and, dare I say, pretty vulnerable.

I can go a whole week without picking up my phone. Am I getting old, or something?

Feminine · 01/09/2011 19:33

I feel so sorry for you op I am from Putney originally and know it well.

Putney Bridge at 4pm? is nowhere safe?

Little bastards...

I can see why you would want to ban them.
