To go to out of hours doctor this evening?

supposed to be on holiday but came back early. Long crappy story.....

Anyway, I went to the doctor on weds before we went away, I have recurrent ear and throat infections. I'm waiting for an ent appointment as the last one took four lots of antibiotics to clear up and had spread into my saliva gland on one side. I have had pain swallowing for about a week and my ear was starting to get sore as well. Have had a temp but have been taking ibuprofen and staggering with paracetomol. Have been feeling worse and worse.
Usual doctor knows my history and I know when an infection is starting. I get pain swallowing and then it goes downhill from there.

Usual doctor on holiday, saw a locus. He was so dismissive, didn't want to hear the background, didn't look in my throat, took temp, said no sign of a bacterial infection and to take strepsils and come back in a week in his words if I was "still making a fuss".

Came out of the appointment feeling like a bit of a twat.

Am now in lots more pain, ear is throbbing, turning my head to the opposite side that is throbbing is really difficult, has gone all stiff and v painful. Throat has that awful I've had it sliced open and rubbed with salt feeling.

Am feeling all fluey now but am worried that o.o.h service will tell me I'm being daft as well. I'm really not one to think antibiotics are needed just for a cold/viral bugs.

I didn't see a locus. It was a locum. I have no idea what a locus is.

Just do whatever will help you deal with whatever is going on.

I've had something like what you describe and ended up needing to be admitted for iv antibiotics, and severe dehydration.

The hospital doctor wanted to know why I waited so long to get treatment (Like you I had seen a locum, who said to gargle salt water and come back a week later).

Hope you get the help you need.

Same thing happened to me kevlar. Went back to the drs two days running insisting I was ill, ended up in hospital for 3 days having my throat lanced . I knew I was ill, and it seems you do too.

Go to the OOH or A&E and see someone who knows what they're up to.

If it's affecting your neck movements it could be pressing on or have spread outside of your throat into the flesh of your neck. It sounds more likely it's blocking the connection to your middle ear, but sounds like you need it looked at. Is your tonsil swollen that side? Are you actually able to swallow, or getting a bit drooly? - if so ->A&E!

Two for and one against....

I think I'm going to have to go at some point this weekend if I don't go tonight and I am worried about it getting as bad as it did last time. I can't afford the time off work.

YABU to know that you need antibiotics, i am the same, i always know when i am getting a throat infection. However a doctor that doesn't know you won't give you them unless there is a sign that the infection is present, so you would be wasting your time. You will have to wait, it may be showing more signs by tomorrow.

YANBU. Get thee to the OOH service. If you're very unlucky, something like this can end up being mastoiditis, which is far more serious and definitely worth avoiding.

YANBU if this is recurrent and you are getting worse. Bare in mind it's BH weekend so Tuesday until GP open and everyone who's sneezed over the weekend will want an apt and will be very busy playing catch up.

But please lodge a complaint about the Locum or things will never change. Some are brilliant (one saved my friends Mums life - her regular Dr had been ignoring her when she said she had xyz symptoms for over a year - she had cancer :( ) The good ones don't deserve to have their reputations ruined by the ones that are crap.

Sorry, cross posted. Thank you ladies ( or men?), I'm going to go.I have about ten mins where I don't feel too bad but if I get up and do anything or talk it's just really rotten.

Is that your professional diagnosis bibbity?

It seems as if you may as well have seen a locus or a locust OP; if the pain persists, get thee to the out-of-hours doc this evening where you should get more than a cursory examination and a prescription for appropriate meds.

No, not now. Was ok with water earlier but anything now is too painful. I know I sound like a massive wuss but I'm really not. Honestly. I once walked home with a broken wrist and everything.

I know what a locus is! It's the set of all points that share a common property.

With those symptoms, get there now. I was admitted with a suspected quinsy and even though I didn't have it, I was in agony. I had to spit into a cup as my airway was so restricted

Definitely go. And make sure that you, or someone with you, gets your background across - don't let them turn you away without a proper examination and strepsils.

Thank you all. Have called and waiting for doctor to call back. You have to speak to a doctor first and then go to a locAl centre if they think you need to be seen.

I'll let you know how I get on. Off to lie down until doctor calls back.

Get to the ooh, if you can't swallow then you are at risk of dehydration.
The last time I saw a locom he told me I was fine, 2 hrs later I had been admitted to hospital with a bad kidney infection.
You are not being a wimp.

at locus. Maybe you're preoccupied with the locus of the infection?

YANBU, the locum sounds like a dick given your past history and current symptoms. I wouldn't go to A&E but definitely to a minor injuries walk in centre if you have one, otherwise ring the GP again and tell them how much worse you're feeling. I agree that this kind of infection can be serious if left untreated.

These serious symptoms are exactly what OOH Dr is for imo.
