to ask if you do this with spaghetti?

My dp insists on chopping up his spaghetti before he eats it because he can't twirl it. It really used to bug the hell out of me and i'd have to say something, (probably because when i was younger id've given anything to be allowed to twirl my spaghetti instead of my mum chopping it up). But now I just glare silently at his plate.

Does anyone else do this or know anyone that does it? Is it a really common thing to do? Excluding young children who haven't got the hang of twirling yet.

DD's have both been able to twirl since forever.

I also chuck spaghetti at the fridge to see if it is cooked (I use the fridge as the wall is painted so it doesn't stick anyway)
If it is cooked, it sticks. Genius.

If that's the worst you can say about him . . . YABU!

Claw3 · 27/08/2011 10:17

I bought some extra long spaghetti the other day, instead of the shorter supermarket own brand, so my kids could experience the same choking on it experience i had as a kid Smile

Melly20MummyToPoppy · 27/08/2011 12:11

Andrewofgg, that's definately not the worst i can say about him.

My family are Italian...they all chop theirs up with a fork Grin

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 27/08/2011 12:32

We 'twirl' but my husband tends to just gather up a 'bunch' of as much as he can on his fork, shove it in his mouth and suck the spaghetti in. Makes a terrible noise - and mess - with spaghetti slapping him in the face and sauce flying everywhere.

Therefore, I've come to the conclusion that because men often eat more quickly and are perhaps 'more hungry', they don't bother with the niceties of twirling because it takes too long.. Grin

I have one word for the spaghetti philistines...Penne Wink

TrillianAstra · 27/08/2011 14:05

He "can't" use the washing machine, or put his clothes in the laundry bin? Hmm

If he can't work a washing machine then he is clearly too incompetent to be allowed to drive a car or hold down a job.

notlettingthefearshow · 27/08/2011 14:13

It's unusual yes but if he's a messy eater, may be better than the alternative! My dad does it and I have long since given up trying to correct him.

I am a chopper Grin

fourkids · 27/08/2011 15:36

twirling is for grown-ups...chopping is for (very small) children

pointydog · 27/08/2011 15:37

Chop it for small kids.

Fork and spoon for older kids adn some adults.

Fork only for adults who are very au fait with spaghetti.

Maybe your dp doesn't like the thought of any mess?

vintageteacups · 27/08/2011 15:39

To make it easier for the kids, I just snap in half when dry and then cook it. Makes it easier to twirl but still twirlable.

bucaneve · 27/08/2011 15:42

I'm Italian and cut up my spaghetti! No one has ever minded. I am unnaturally clumsy tho. So I think its safer if I cut my spaghetti up.

Exactly zuki its nobodies business how you eat your spaghetti as long as you do it politely

AnnoyingOrange · 27/08/2011 16:00

I twirl for a bit, get bored and chop the rest.

If you twirl you get too much pasta and not enough sauce on the fork

PenguinArmy · 27/08/2011 16:07

I don't like spaghetti, do like penne though

Yabu.

DownyEmerald · 27/08/2011 21:46

I only realised that proper grown-ups don't twirl against the spoon recently. So now I am in a messy phase practising doing it properly when I thought I knew how to do this! Blush

Goldrill · 27/08/2011 22:09

ooh - is losing the spoon a sign of grown-upness then? DP twirls with spoon but I twirl without and it has always left me feeling vaguely inferior!
