to ask if you do this with spaghetti?

My dp insists on chopping up his spaghetti before he eats it because he can't twirl it. It really used to bug the hell out of me and i'd have to say something, (probably because when i was younger id've given anything to be allowed to twirl my spaghetti instead of my mum chopping it up). But now I just glare silently at his plate.

Does anyone else do this or know anyone that does it? Is it a really common thing to do? Excluding young children who haven't got the hang of twirling yet.

My 4 year old has never felt the need to chop spaghetti!!Shock

Gonzo33 · 26/08/2011 15:48

My dh does this drives me nucking futs. My ds twirls, and so so I.

eurochick · 26/08/2011 15:49

Surely this is a basic table skill these days. Like being able to use chopsticks?

To the poster who used to cut up her spaghetti in front of Italians: they will have assumed you are a barbarian. The ones I know seem to assume most English people are anyway. Grin

There are certain things that can be done in the privacy of one's home that should never be done in public - and chopping up a spag meal is one of them.

Unless he learns the fine art of twirling, when dining at a restaurant encourage him to order anything but spaghetti and if you are invited to dinner with friends/family, have a discreet word with the host/ess about the intended menu Grin

wahwahwah · 26/08/2011 15:50

Twirl, slurp and splatter.
My mum used to get the really long spaghetti when we were kids and was very very anti-mess. we are all pretty good at eating the stuff without making a mess! I remember being amazed when I went to a friends house and her mum was breaking up the short stuff before cooking it.

When I'm on my own, I chop it up and mix it with the sauce, otherwise I eat the sauce and pasta seperately :)

tuxedoprincess · 26/08/2011 15:57

I'm with bananamonkey, I break it up before cooking as I cant bear watching DS1 snorking great forkfuls in like a shovel!!! nearly bought him one of those gimmicky large battery operated twirly forks in the xmas gift section of BHS last year ha ha

stripeybump · 26/08/2011 16:32

I find it easier to eat if it's not chopped up. It's then ends that flick and make the mess and chopped up spaghetti = more ends = more flicking = more mess.

ragged · 26/08/2011 17:05

I wasn't taught to twirl until about 11yo, always chopped before then. Does it really matter? Confused

Clarabumps · 26/08/2011 17:10

dp chops and eats it with a knife! It drives me mental- however he does eat like a caveman. Which also drives me mental!

Takitezee · 26/08/2011 17:13

I chop mine. I can twirl but it seems to taste nicer chopped up. I wouldn't choose spagetti but the rest of the family like to twirl.

Melly20MummyToPoppy · 27/08/2011 08:13

He eats it with a knife? Is that instead of or aswell as a fork?

OP posts:
Shutupanddrive · 27/08/2011 08:55

Oh god DP does this, and eats it with a knife and fork. Even though I try and hide the knife and hive him a spoon Hmm

Shutupanddrive · 27/08/2011 08:56

My brother snaps it into bits before putting it in the saucepan which also drives me mad!

Piggles · 27/08/2011 09:00

Chopping isn't so bad when done discretely (DSD's boyfriend does it very quietly and nicely and I manage to avert my twitching eyes from his actions - DSD is not so polite, twirling beautifully and gently mocking him) but full on elbows out, knife squeaking on the plate chop-chop-chopping into tiny bits as my beloved mother and not-remotely-beloved XP do irks me.

Though I'm not sure that DH's approach to spaghetti is much better - it really is akin to a vacuum cleaner with a stuck sock Hmm

I just serve penne with the sauce and pretend I forgot to buy spaghetti - it is better for my blood pressure and none of them give a shit as long as they are fed.

Catsmamma · 27/08/2011 09:03

i bet the OP's husband cuts sandwiches into squares as well.....utter savage!

supadupapupascupa · 27/08/2011 09:04

both DH and I chop ours. twirling is all very well and good, but it has a habit of untwirling en route to mouth and splashing tomato sauce all over.
the pasta also gets broken up before cooking.

TotemPole · 27/08/2011 09:04

Shock @ all those who chop and don't twirl.

supadupapupascupa · 27/08/2011 09:06

i also like to spoon it onto toast Grin

TotemPole · 27/08/2011 09:10

Tinned spaghetti on toast is ok, but not proper spaghetti surely?

BibiBlocksberg · 27/08/2011 09:12

Ex P did this - drove me nuts every single time. I could have lived with he fact he chopped in the first place but again, the screeching and scraping, dear god!!!

It's pasta FFS but he put as much effort into sawing that than if he'd been eating a particularly tough steak!

Maybe that's the answer - issue the screechers with steak knives to get the job done quickly and quietly :)

Melly20MummyToPoppy · 27/08/2011 09:39

Tbh I don't see the point in even buying spaghetti if you're just going to chop it up! What is the point of that?
