To hate supermarket tillers commenting on my groceries

I know they are being kind but I always seem to have them pick up stuff Im buying, look ate me with a raised eyebrow and question how much it costs.

This morning I was buying a bag of cherries and the lady picked them up and halted proceedings with a "These are five pounds" "Are you sure you want them?"

Cue me feeling like I was in some onscure game show, while two of them gathered with shocked faces afore me and in back of me in the queue while, against the clock, I had to decide.

"Will I? , Wont I?. Oh my god, is £5 a lot for cherries? Will I look cheap if I say no? Will I look frivolous if i through caution to the wind and buy these gold plated cherries?"

Really its too much. Anyway I bought the cherries.

I think they're trying to be helpful tbh. I had the same exact thing in our greengrocers when buying cherries. I told them to forget it, I don't like cherries that much. It's worse when they comment on other things like 'ooo a pregnancy test eh?' I know what you've been up to....'

Having worked on a check out as well as being a customer, I totally agree with you.

It is not the bloody till persons job to make any comment on what you are buying, unless it is unlawful to sell it. Nor is it appropriate for a till person or any other member of staff to pull faces at what you are buying. Just bloody serve the customer FGS!!

I actively avoid one of the check out staff at my local supermarket, even if she is the only one free, simply because she moans and moans about her job, how she wants to move to another store closer to where she lives and they haven't processed her application. All this constant moaning is done in a whisper, so I end up asking her to repeat her drivel and try to pack my shopping at the same time. I refuse to use her till now.

I don't like it either. Once a tiller ( is that a word?) told me she was saving up to buy the microfibre mop I was buying. It made me feel awful, especially since she had commented on my expensive yoghurt on my previous visit. But probably she was just trying to make conversation.

Thank god for self service tills! That's all i'm saying :o

We bought a stack of shopping before heading up to a SC in Scotland. It was the usual stuff we buy (fruit, veg, cheese, juice - nothing outlandish, but nothing processed) and got the comment 'My god, that's the healthiest shopping I have ever seen!' from the assistant. God knows what the other shoppers were buying.

I was once shopping one evening, child free, but buying quite a few baby items.

The cashier asked me how old my LO was. I replied 9 months.

"It gets easier" she said in a comforting tone.

I think I must have looked really shit.

Salt of the earth lady in my greengrocers does it. I think it's sweet even though I can afford the cherries.

When you buy loads of alcohol and they ask if you're having a party is a bit embarrassing! Just stocking up, honest.

There's one in my local Morrisons who has to comment on everything she scans so we get:

Porridge "eeugh don't like that"
Cream "ooh can't eat that. Gallstones."
Granary bread "can't eat bread with bits in"
Bananas "they constipate you you know"

It's like a running commentary. I'd rather queue for ages at another till than be served by her.

One of the playground mums got a job there and tells me she's known as "gobby June".

People working on tills are just that...People. I think it's nice when they make conversation, reminds me of one of the many reasons I stopped living in London (if you say hello to them there they look at you like you're insane).

Regarding cherries specifically, I think often people don't realise how expensive they are (especially just out of season) so may not intend to pick up so many, so I think the intention there is to be helpful. If she were saying it about things which have a fixed price then I would consider a bit rude and may mention that I can read the price tag, thanks.

I was buying 'No Vac' once and the sullen teenage boy 'tiller' suddenly perked up and said 'my mum makes me use this before my friends come round, it smells boss!' or words to that effect, really made me chuckle as his assesment of spring fresh carpet spray didn't really fit with his image.

I have had comments on the amount.
" Do you shop monthly?"
" No weekly"
" For how many?" incredulous expression.

" 4 "
" Tell them to stop eating as much"
" er, fuck off" ( in my head)

I often get stopped by other shoppers when I pick something up "Oh, what are you going to make with that?" "How do you cook that?" etc, etc.

It's fine when I'm not in a hurry, but it's become a standing joke in our house. I also get asked to take photos with people's cameras all the time. I DH has never been asked to take a photo or to explain his shopping. I tell him it's because he looks so grumpy!

There is nothing wrong with describing people by their professional term when speaking about them in that context.

Do we not say..."teachers"?or "dentists" should we say "people who teach?" pr people who tend to our teeth"/

Ooh i just remembered one once, few months ago when i was still pg, i had a craving of strawberries and cream. I went into the greengrocers and bought all 4 punnets that were left and the guy who served me was like
" woah! Somebody likes strawberries!"

What I really hate is when you are buying something perishable, and it's BOGOF but you know that you neither need nor have the space to store or the arms to carry, an extra bag/pack of whatever it is. And the teller has a go at you for not taking the free thing. I don't WANT the free thing. I don't want to help the store reduce overstocked products. It's their problem and they are trying to make it mine.

I've never heard the term tillers

Oh I remember I was buying some Durex lube the type that is tingly. I chucked it in the trolley and thought no more about it. Going through the till and the boy, who was about 17 picked it up and said "oh this is good stuff, have you tried it before?" much from me I mumble "err no" and he says " oh its great, you can really feel it working, hope you enjoy it, have fun"

The correct term is checkout assistant.

When I was buying the pregnancy test that confirmed my daughter, the woman behind the till couldnt scan it. She then proceeded to shout across superdrug to another woman to check how much it was. "No, its not that pregnancy test, its this one, she wants this one!"

THEN she looks to see if I have a bag. I dont. "Do you want a bag?"

I replied that seeing as the ENTIRE shopping centre now knew what I was buying, it seemed pointless to try and keep any note of privacy. Fool.

xDP once bought condoms and the check-out chap gave him a really knowing look and told him to have fun. He was mortified. I also hate it when people in cafes or take aways know your order and point out you always have it, I always feel I should order something else.
