Who actually cares enough to send this chap to prison? Why? Is he dangerous? Is he disgusting? Is he a criminal? here

To return to original question - he has broken the law, so yes, he is a criminal. Have read interviews with him in the past, and he also appears to be a complete twat.

The question of whether he's a criminal is not black and white at all. Several police forces and judges, over a period of years have decided that his behaviour does not constitute a breach of the peace. It's more or less only Perth where they've decided that a naked man, without any other aggravating features is going to cause alarm and distress.

I'm Shock by all the posters who seem to leap directly from "I wouldn't want to see this" to "bang him up". I personally do not want to see men with big wobbly moobs taking their tops off if the sun ever comes out, but unfortunately that's not a good enough reason for prosecution.

He does sound like a deeply annoying tit, but that also sadly is not enough reason to bang him up.

I thought he was sent to jail for contempt of court and not for being naked? Surely a secure mental hospital would be more suitable?

DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 20/07/2012 18:03

I have sympathy for his long suffering kids and his ex. While he's been breaking the law left right and centre for the last decade and in and out jail all that time, his kids wouldn't be having regular contact with him and I'm guessing he hasn't contributed much financially to their upbringing.

I do not have sympathy for "the naked rambler" because he's been locked up. He's broken the law. Instead of all this handwringing because he's been locked up so many times and other criminals have not, how about a bit of handwringing at the amount of police/court/prison service time is spent on dealing with this deranged loser? All that tax payers money being spent on him that could be spent on dealing with other crimes? Hmm

What does it say about Scotland?

They let Lockerbie bomber al-Megrahi out on compassionate grounds and put a naked man in solitary for six years.

CecilyP · 21/07/2012 13:04

I never even took my jumper off when feeding my baby, so it is hardly be a comparison.

NovackNGood · 21/07/2012 13:11

Al Megrahi was terminally ill and released on compassionate grounds and the other fool could have put clothes on any day of the week if he wanted to play pool with the general prisoners without starting trouble.

NovackNGood · 21/07/2012 13:12

And minimum is around 40 K a year to house a prisoner and about double that for solitary so he has cost every tax payer a fortune. If he wants to be free in society he should follow societies rules. Or go somewhere else that accommodates him.

NovackNGood - And minimum is around 40 K a year to house a prisoner and about double that for solitary so he has cost every tax payer a fortune. If he wants to be free in society he should follow societies rules. Or go somewhere else that accommodates him.

Or you could choose not to send him to prison simply for exercising his freedom in a 'free' society. There is no 'rule' against nakedness. Lots of peple don't find the human body offensive.

Or as you say - perhaps he should have realised Scotland was like that - no shortage of bigots.

NovackNGood · 21/07/2012 13:44

Well i've nothing against nakedness either but there are hundreds on here against page three and then in favour of boobs out for breast feeding etc so it seems the nation is divided and I expect very few want to see someone in a backpack and a tiny swinging tiddler poking out a curly bush slapping against his thighs as he walks around the town centre etc etc. Since out of a UK population of 60 million he is the only one doing it we can safely say, it's not normal.

I wonder if he is suffering PTSD in some form of other and prefers the institutional lifestyle so has no qualms about reoffending. The only job he is ever going to get is as a life model or maybe as a mobile temperature gauge.

petitmort · 21/07/2012 13:52

You can definitely argue it's unusual behaviour. But I don't think the argument can be made that it's unusually offensive - as you rightly point out there aren't many page three girls being dragged to court.

Abnormal doesn't equal offensive and/or imprisonable and I find it hard to believe that a magistrate (or Scottish equivalent) with any experience on the bench could be offended by nudity to such an extent to consider 6 years imprisonment a reasonable punishment.

I don't think he's ill - I think he's making a point.
