but - DD3 had lots of it (and perfume) given to her as gifts at her 6th birthday party - I think it is not that unusual in some areas.

Kids can like playing dress up you know. They also sell plastic high heeled princess shoes for 3 year olds?

Doesn't mean they feel the need to wear high heels all the time.

YANBU. I hate make up for young girls.

I was woken up this morning by DD 5, with orange eye shadow across her nose purple lipstick as rough on her cheecks chin and forehaed and silvery lipstick across her mouth...she looked hilarious.

My little 5 year old would love it as well.
I am afraid I would not get too worked up over it.

My dd's regularly play with lip gloss and nail varnish , why would you be unhappy with this ?
Although the nail varnish on the carpet does cause me to be upset , thankfully the kids stuff seems to be iridescent and glittery so not too bad i guess

my dd (6) would have been delighted, she loves lip gloss and nail varnish! Can't see the problem as long as it's occasional

Thank you for the replies. I take the point that it's a form of dressing up, and of course I do let her dress up, including wearing those high-heeled shoes.

But for me, make-up is A Step Too Far. Should I also let her dress up in those kiddy bra type things you can get from certain trashy stores?

I cringe at the thought of seeing her five-year-old face with slap on it. Go on, flame me for it! I am waiting for someone to convince me I'm in the wrong here.

I might be unreasonable, but I wouldn't be happy either.

Putting a bra on a 5yo implies they should pretend to have boobs (which are indeed a sign of adultness, sexuality & fertility).
But they don't have to pretend about faces & fingernails, they already do have fingernails & faces, sometimes with blemishes.
So... I think the bra comparison is all wrong.
Do you feel the same if she puts on a pair of your smart strappy sandals?

YANBU, I hate to see make-up on kids, you only have to look at Jordan's daughter.

It's not about 'right' and 'wrong' though, is it? You believe it's horrible, that's your prerogative, others feel differently. I think little girls like to dress up - little boys too - smearing make-up, clown-like, all over their faces doesn't mean that they're being made to dress as tramps.

I wouldn't let my daughter wear heels, not the princess ones either, because her feet are delicate so it's from a health point of view. I'm not keen on the 'trashy tops' as you call them, I'd like her to stay a little girl whilst she is one.

But as long as my daughter isn't plundering my expensive makeup for her face, arms and bedroom wall, I don't have a problem with it.

I don't see how it is different to messing around with face paints and dressing up clothes at home. I would be perfectly happy to let my DC play with it at home but would wash it off if we were going out

YY Lying I wouldn't allow the high heels as they are bad for feet and dangerous.

My take is that make up play is fine in the house for a child of any age, but then they wash it off beore they leave the house.

YANBU, DD's got disney princess eyeshadow from a friends 5th party. Only...DD2 is 3. And they left it in. So my 3yo was covered in eyeshadow when we got home.

I am a bit of a hypocrite as they are dying to have makeup, so they have flavoured lipbalm as lipstick and use my benefit face powder sometimes but beyond that it's an absolute nono

madmomma I totally agree. OP, YANBU but I think makeup at that age (and up to about 10) is only for wearing when dressing up, not outside the house.
