Also posted in Baby Names, but I guess a lot if the ladies there don't have DCs yet.

So - did anyone ever have the gumption to tell you outright that they think the name you chose for your child is awful?

They are fab names- I LOVE Niamh, one of my all time favourite names
I'm guessing you are Irish?
You have to have the Irish lilt in your accent to have them pronounced correctly (Loves the Irish accent too)

BumWiper · 25/08/2011 10:58

In Irish the shee sound is depicted by si.

Bh is a vee sound.

MoominsAreScary · 25/08/2011 10:59

Caoimhe and niamh are on our short list

BumWiper · 25/08/2011 11:01

Lol yes I'm irish, big gang of us with irish names.Cathal,Donal,Siobhan,Naoise (me) and Saoirse.
Dh is from London and FIL is staunchly British and see's irish names as peasant names.

BumWiper · 25/08/2011 11:03

Moomin beware of some strange spellings and pronounciations.I have had Caoimhe called kayomi countless times.

mumnotmachine · 25/08/2011 11:08

And it should be Kee-vee?
Ive seen Saoirse befoore as well- thats Ser-sha
Are you Nee-sha?

BumWiper · 25/08/2011 11:09

No its Kwee-va and yes its Nee-sha.

MoominsAreScary · 25/08/2011 11:10

Bumwiper that's my worry, dp is Irish so would like an Irish name but even when you look at some name pronounciation sites they differ

MoominsAreScary · 25/08/2011 11:16

I like Aoife but I do wonder how people looking at the spelling would pronounce it

BumWiper · 25/08/2011 11:17

Truth be told its a pain having to constantly correct.

But then there are plenty of names nowadays from other countries and regions knocking about.I recently met a lady from Poland and her daughter is Katerzyna (Kat-ar-jshn-na).

BumWiper · 25/08/2011 11:18

I think Aoife has transcended and is a lovely name.

twinklingfairy · 25/08/2011 11:33

Aofie is it pronounced a-o-fee. Sort of like a scottish awfee, meaning awfully. Not that Aofie means awfully, but awfee does. As in 'That's an awfee good pick chure!'

Caoimhe, is that pronounce kee-vaa? I know it is not pronounced as it reads, but really have no clue as to how it ought to be.

I do like different names but it is difficult to get your head around reading gaelic ones.

PerryCombover · 25/08/2011 11:36

I'd pronounce Caoimhe as Kwee va

PerryCombover · 25/08/2011 11:38

My squids have English names because I couldn't bear the correction over correction that Irish names would require

I was living in England then...now back in Ireland everyone is a bit over my English name choices

JennyPiccolo · 25/08/2011 11:45

My DD is Cairistiona, i think it's the prettiest name ive ever heard. I didnt realise quite how unusual it was when we named her though, she was a few days old when we heard it and we called her it straight away.

I've never posted it on MN before! I wonder what people think. Mostly 'too Scottish', i bet.

JennyPiccolo · 25/08/2011 11:47

we like aoife but it sounded awful with DP surname. I have a very gaelic name and i do like it.

twinklingfairy · 25/08/2011 11:49

I wouldn't have even thought of it as Scottish?
Is the Cairist bit said fast iona more slowly?

twinklingfairy · 25/08/2011 11:50

oh, hang on. It is pronounce Cairist-eeona, not Cairist-Iona?

JennyPiccolo · 25/08/2011 11:51

Cara-shteena, almost. We call her Cara for short.

JennyPiccolo · 25/08/2011 11:52
it's a gaelic folk song.
Empusa · 25/08/2011 12:06

Most of the names in this thread are lovely, the reactions are awful!

I know we'll get bad reactions, hence why we are keeping the names secret until the child is born. Don't want to have to listen to people trying to change our minds.

AlpiniAddict · 25/08/2011 12:08

My DC are:
DS1: Jay Alexander
DS2: William Oliver
DD1: Ava Jean
DD2: Violet May

I constantly got told that William would be called Willy and Violet would be Vi,but they're 5 and 15 months respectively and never have been. ExH didn't like any of the names at first but I persuaded him and now he loves them. If I have a 5th baby I like Bella for a girl but not sure on a boys name.

Empusa · 25/08/2011 12:14

My mum got talked out of my original name, and had to choose a more normal name.

Irony being that the original name would have suited me perfectly.

Determined not to do the same thing. Think mum regrets changing it, I know I do!

Glitterknickaz · 25/08/2011 12:15

I also like Irish names, Caitlin is pretty and people don't have pronunciation issues with it!

MoominsAreScary · 25/08/2011 12:20

I like Ava and Isabella have no boys names though
