Marks and Bastard Spencer have RUINED ds2's birthday

Greensleeves · 18/08/2011 15:24

ds2's birthday tomorrow, he's 7

it will be the first birthday dh has ever been away, so I have busted a gut to make it special for him

I ordered something off M&S online which he really, really wants and opted for the extra charge to have it delivered today, in time to be wrapped etc

They said the payment wouldn't go through, there was a problem with the card etc, I put it through over and over again

eventually dh phoned them, from Brazil, and gave all the details over the phone and double-checked with the woman that it had gone through and would still be delivered today, 18th August

so I rang up customer services today to ask if they had an approximate time as I have to take ds1 out to a party later

they said it hadn't gone through and was marked as not paid for

eventually after more schenanigans it turned out that it was because our visa debit card is a co-op bank card - they accept visa debit cards but not visa electron (which ours isn't) - apparently, this woman laughingly told me, the first four digits of the co-op cards are the same as electron cards, so they don't work! nobody asked dh whether it was a co-op card ffs

so the present isn't paid for and won't be arriving after all

I know it sounds trivial but I am SO upset, it has been a tough two weeks without dh here anyway and I really thought I had done a good job of making his birthday lovely Sad

A segment of orange!

We had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night half an hour before I went to bed, drink a cup of sulphuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down t'mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad and our mother would kill us and dance about on our graves singing Hallelujah.

Ormirian · 18/08/2011 16:51

I was just wondering to myself where greeny was...and here she is Grin

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 18/08/2011 16:52

You got singing?

fortyplus · 18/08/2011 16:52

How about print off a picture of the item and wrap it up with some other small token gift - then act really excited and tell him all about how it's going to be delivered specially for him on Monday or whenever. Smile

usualsuspect · 18/08/2011 16:52

Why was the thread title changed?

This is not the MN I know and love Sad

I hope you got the present OP

ShirleyKnot · 18/08/2011 16:53

This is weird actually, because I was thinking of starting a thread earlier, along the lines of "This time last year what were you talking about on MN" and so I did an advanced search and I was writing something like "WHen I was pregnant I worked 17 hours a day and was also a part time shepherd and I DIDN'T COMPLAIN!"

So, everything is the same as it always is.

porcamiseria · 18/08/2011 16:53

it was blatantly homophobic and offensive Grin

haaaaaaa

sayithowitis · 18/08/2011 16:53

I can understand Op was upset, but maybe, she could have turned the situation to her advantage by giving her Ds a small gift to open tomorrow, with the promise that his special present would be here to open when Daddy gets back. He could have two birthdays - on tomorrow and one, with all the trimmings, when Daddy gets home.

MightyQuim · 18/08/2011 16:53

I didn't notice anyone saying that the op's ds should be happy with some comedy non-present. Just that there's plenty of time to get him a decent present and saying his birthday is 'ruined' is dramatic beyond belief.

basingstoke · 18/08/2011 16:53

I tend to catastrophise when something like this happens. I need to get it out of my system before I can put my mind to sorting things out. Which is what greeny's doing, isn't it? On the way to M&S to sort it out.

basingstoke · 18/08/2011 16:55

Good Lord - the thread title! What's going on?

Hmmmm Hmm

MightyQuim · 18/08/2011 16:56

Imagine the pasting a newbie would get for posting this thread. Particularly the deleted post!
Mumsnet is the same as it always was. Regulars can be as unreasonable as they like and they will always be reasonable.

ShirleyKnot · 18/08/2011 16:57

But she's not a newbie is she?

So what?

KATC2010 · 18/08/2011 16:57

Purple - don't know - maybe just having a (misplaced) cynical moment!

But with regards to the present, sincerely hope that she gets DS what he wants, as I would sympathise with a present not being available for birthday as planned.

why birthdays can't be nice without the present? thats not making the day special.

Tortington · 18/08/2011 16:59

i can assure you that regulars always get special treatment and we always win mn prizes

if you dont like it have a teapot

MightyQuim · 18/08/2011 17:01

You jest but it's true. I'm sure I've seen pretty much identical threads to this about other cock ups but because it wasn't a known name who posted they were, rightly imo, told to get over themselves.

Tanith · 18/08/2011 17:03

I agree with Mightyquim.

I can understand OP being upset over the mix up.
I can understand how irritating it is to be told to count your blessings when venting your ire.

But sending a message like that to the baby's mother through her friend is despicable.

I can just imagine the furore if a less popular poster like me were to have posted that message.

Tortington · 18/08/2011 17:03

i do not jest. my teapots are no joking matter! you insult me sir.

have a sprout

LtEveDallas · 18/08/2011 17:03

No-one would care if it was a newbie posting...this is MN, not Netmums, swearing doesn't really make Jesus cry you know

QuintessentialShadow · 18/08/2011 17:04

But why did you leave it so late, Greeny?

Hmm
usualsuspect · 18/08/2011 17:05

I wouldn't tell anyone to get over themselves if a cock up like this happened

When Dell fucked up a christmas present order of mine I was a raging maniac for days

MrsCampbellBlack · 18/08/2011 17:06

She didn't leave it so late - she thought she'd paid for a courier to deliver on a specified date. I do this and they turn up when they should - well normally they do.

And other people have posted about companies fucking up, eg, Featherdown Farms, Tescos and received a lot of sympathy.
