Marks and Bastard Spencer have RUINED ds2's birthday

Greensleeves · 18/08/2011 15:24

ds2's birthday tomorrow, he's 7

it will be the first birthday dh has ever been away, so I have busted a gut to make it special for him

I ordered something off M&S online which he really, really wants and opted for the extra charge to have it delivered today, in time to be wrapped etc

They said the payment wouldn't go through, there was a problem with the card etc, I put it through over and over again

eventually dh phoned them, from Brazil, and gave all the details over the phone and double-checked with the woman that it had gone through and would still be delivered today, 18th August

so I rang up customer services today to ask if they had an approximate time as I have to take ds1 out to a party later

they said it hadn't gone through and was marked as not paid for

eventually after more schenanigans it turned out that it was because our visa debit card is a co-op bank card - they accept visa debit cards but not visa electron (which ours isn't) - apparently, this woman laughingly told me, the first four digits of the co-op cards are the same as electron cards, so they don't work! nobody asked dh whether it was a co-op card ffs

so the present isn't paid for and won't be arriving after all

I know it sounds trivial but I am SO upset, it has been a tough two weeks without dh here anyway and I really thought I had done a good job of making his birthday lovely Sad

Thank you Narky, I've been in a vile mood all day and you've just made me Grin for the first time since I got up!

ThePosieParker · 18/08/2011 16:41

or these for a tenner, more turquoise

SuePurblybilt · 18/08/2011 16:42

Make sure it's in the rain Purple, you don't want to enjoy it now.

Ormirian · 18/08/2011 16:42

Children these days don't know they're born. Surely he'd be happy with just an empty box - you could decorate it with glitter and some coloured paper. And then go for a nice wholesome walk and pick blackberries. In my day we made do with a smacked bum and an orange and we were grateful.

Blatherskite · 18/08/2011 16:42

Also loving tethers' "This isn't just a fuck up. This is an M&S fuck up' Grin

ShirleyKnot · 18/08/2011 16:42

You got an orange?

psiloveyou · 18/08/2011 16:43

This is better than whittling. More suitable for a special occasion.

coppertop · 18/08/2011 16:43

I think Custy should've offered one of those hand-carved teapots as a present.

Gawd bless us every one.

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 18/08/2011 16:44

We got half a satsuma and were grateful for it.

landrover · 18/08/2011 16:45

ha the thread titles been changed !!!!!!

PortBlacksandIsLovelyInAutumn · 18/08/2011 16:46

As an extra birthday game they could play guess the creature.....

(hope you get what you want Greeny)

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 18/08/2011 16:46

British Horse Loggers Raffle (from that site)

Where exactly does the punctuation go??

Purpleprickles · 18/08/2011 16:47

The ideas just keep coming, whittling, in the rain, with half an orange each for the birthday tea. Cake ideas anyone?

Notbothered- ahh so you would be upset? Ok so you wouldn't post on aibu or get angry but you would be upset. Isn't that the funny thing about humans, we're all a bit different in our approaches to life and situations.

QueenofJacksDreams · 18/08/2011 16:47

Why on earth has your amazing title been changed? Shock Think M&S was well deserving of it.

ShirleyKnot · 18/08/2011 16:47

I don't even know when my birthday is. Sad

SO all you people with birthdays and citrus fruits should just stop complaining, yeah?

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 18/08/2011 16:47

I'm sure M&S are pleased the title's changed. It's now way more google friendly Grin

Purpleprickles · 18/08/2011 16:47

Grin Grin Port

SuePurblybilt · 18/08/2011 16:48

Acksherly, I do teach whittling to small people as part of my job. We start on carrots Grin. I may think of birthday parties for the future......

Anyway, when I was young we got pictures of other children getting presents, to remind us how lucky we were to have parents who understood the true meaning of birthdays. And we were grateful.

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 18/08/2011 16:48
coppertop · 18/08/2011 16:48

Half an orange? Such extravagance. In my day we shared a single segment between six of us - and that was only after Grandma had sucked the juice out first.

MightyQuim · 18/08/2011 16:48

OK I can understand the OP being peed off but she is really making more of it than is necessary and I agree that it is going to be more the attitude that the birthday is 'ruined' that has spoilt the birthday than the cock up. Of course 7 yo's expect and love getting presents but there have been many suggestions on here as to how you can try and get the present. And if it's not in stock anywhere locally would it really be the end of the world if you had to get your son a different, equally nice, present?
I assume the OP is a regular considering the support she's getting on a thread like this particularly considering the contents of the vile post that she made which has been deleted but alluded to further down the thread.
And as for refusing to name what the gift was or say why - just weird.

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 18/08/2011 16:49

We drew picture of people getting pictures of other children getting presents.

MrsCampbellBlack · 18/08/2011 16:49

Greeny - lordy - surely you should know by now that your child should be happy with a clementine and an empty cardboard box for his birthday/christmas. I mean how outraegous to think you pay extra for specified day delivery and then dare to be cross when they fuck up.

M&S online is crap.

And some people on mn are pretty crap too.

Hope you get the present and your DS has a lovely birthday.

Oh and so agree with mmelindor re. the 'ooh is the worst thing you have to worry about' crap - its just dull.
