I have had the coil for four years and over the past 3 have had a series of gynae problems including lots of pain and irregular bleeding. Whenever he asks what contraception im using he says 'oh well that shouldnt happen if you have the coil as it stop you from ovulating' which is total bullshit, also he says you shouldnt have periods at all. Aside from the fact he has done nothing about my problems over the past years AIBU to be cheesed off with him in general?

Which type of coil do you have? Have you asked your GP to take it out? It might solve your problems?

Info here about coils which show that lots of people ask to have them removed due to pain/bleeding.

YANBU, sounds like he's thinking of the Mirena implant rather than the traditional coil, though what he says isn't really accurate for that either!

I havent changed no, however a female GP has now joined the practice so I will be getting an appointment with her asap

He sounds hopeless. So what if lots of women do not have periods with the mirena - you are having them and problematic ones at that so he should be investigating why and trying to help not just dismissing you with "well that shouldn't be happening."

I would have seen someone else years ago though, changing practice if I had to. Go see this new woman and, if she isn't any help, insist on a gynae referal, you shouldn't have to put up with this.

Should have said I am not very good with confrontation either so I do understand why you havn't challenged him directly. I'd have just quietly gone elsewhere. It's quite straightforward to change your GP practice, as long as you can find one is taking new patients, and you don't have to give a reason.
