and tell their children at full volume in front of other customers that "you can get that cheaper in Costco"?

I'm fucking fed up the back teeth of people doing that!!

Why don't you just fuck off to Costco then, and stop trying to lose me the precious very few customers I get????

Shock

beggars belief. AngryHmmSad

I just wanted to say I don't care if yanbu or yabu because you own a bookshop it is my dream!!

I want one in the grassmarket in edinburgh that's all pokey and dark with shelves up to the ceiling and a stepladder...

Blatherskite · 17/08/2011 17:04

DS is going to adore it. He loves Lego and seems really into the Police/Criminal ones at the moment.

Might go and see what I can review... Do you have Mick Inkpen's "The Great Pet Sale"? I love reading that one to the DCs

thejaffacakesareonme · 17/08/2011 17:07

I haven't had a chance to read all the way through the thread. I know though that if I was in a bookshop with the kids they'd nag me to buy them books if there were lollipops or balloons behind the counter. I know some parents might hate that, but it would make me buy more books!

Blatherskite · 17/08/2011 17:09

Ooh and Rainbow Rob. Both of mine have adored that. It's got such bright colours and touchy-feely bits and a rhyming text. I've read it so often, I can do it without the book now :)

Same with Hippos Go Beserk

nickelbabe · 17/08/2011 17:18

i don't have the Great Pet Sale at the moment.
I can order it.

not Rainbow Rob - but I do remember that one - and i can order it :)

stop testing me!
hippos go beserk is also available to order Grin

As the owner of a small shop I was interested to see why you wanted to ban people and can completely sympathise.

Then I saw that your shop is in Sittingbourne, where I live/work! I've never been in because you specialise in children's books and, until recently, I didn't have any children to spoil and had almost forgotten you were there. Now I have a DGD so you can expect me to call in over the next couple of days to have a look at your cloth, bath and cot books. For me your position on the High Street is perfect - it's the best end of town for parking.

See you soon.

LemonDifficult · 17/08/2011 18:02

BeaWheesht, um, the bookshop I ran was in the Grassmarket and much as you describe...

Blatherskite · 17/08/2011 18:05

I've got them all already. Good presents though. I always get The Very Hungry Caterpillar for first babies but lots of freinds are having DC2 now....

MoaningMcMyrtlepants · 17/08/2011 20:02

Oooooh! we were in Toppings the other day, lovely place. I didn't know about Mr B's, will definatley go look for it next time I am in Bath.

Our whole family love bookshops of every shape and size and the kids will pull us in rather than walk past. All I can say is God Bless Billy bookcases :)

TheOldestCat · 17/08/2011 20:08

Nickel, your shop is lovely. DD chose a book the other week on our first visit to sittingbourne. We'll be back! You were very friendly and the DC enjoyed themselves.

I knew you were a MNer but was too shy to say anything. Didn't realise you are pregnant. COngratulations!

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 17/08/2011 20:43

Envy at having book loving DCs Myrtepants

Norks did you dd have one of these treats? - how fabulous!

I think I'll ask for a Delightful Reading Spa Treatment for my birthday :)

MoaningMcMyrtlepants · 17/08/2011 20:49

Nicklebabe what is your FB page called?

ninnymcphee · 17/08/2011 20:54

I love book shops, I love the smell, the touchy feeliness of being able to pick a book up, read the back, browse, be tempted by books you've never ever considered. And OK, you sometimes pay more but take off postage and its not so different.
My local bookshop is closing down. Its been put out of business by Tesco opening round the corner. It makes me sad :(
But I see the attraction of Amazon and its reviews and recommendations, and being able to shop in my pyjamas without washing my hair. So I now chose my books on Amazon then buy them in a bookshop....
And I would never EVER say in earshot of another customer "ooh you can get this cheaper at so and so" but thats because I have manners.

ThePrincessRoyalFiggyrolls · 17/08/2011 20:54

Right, so when are we having a gathering in Nickels shop? I will bring biscuits/cake and some milk, Nickel can provide tea and mugs (if her DH has remembered to buy some Wink!).

Be warned - she will tell you its fine to buy that's not my princess for a boy and make you join the WI Grin where they give you great cake!!!!!!!!!!!!

So when? I'm Freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Grin Smile

chicletteeth · 17/08/2011 20:58

I get most of my stuff from Amazon, but this is largely down to the fact that I am sole carer of my three very young children and I avoid going into book shops with them in case they damage the books. I actually avoid going into any shops with them really, with the exception of a rare trip to Tesco's.

I long for the day when I go browse through the fresh pages of a book (by myself) in an actual bookshop. Won't be long now. Where is your shop, I'll come in and won't mention Amazon or Costco once.

TheOldestCat · 17/08/2011 21:10

I'll be there figgy! Camping in wales next week but off work the week after. We use book purchases as bribes for good behaviour from DD...

brighthair · 17/08/2011 21:19

I love bookshops especially ones I can root in for weird and wonderful books BlushGrin
I read about 30 books a week so would bankrupt myself but I do buy the odd one from independent shops. Especially if they give me a cup of tea

ThePrincessRoyalFiggyrolls · 17/08/2011 21:36

Excellent - week after next it could be then Grin

ProcrastinatorGeneral · 17/08/2011 21:37

I love indies. There are none near me. This makes me sad:(

My favourite used to be the Peak bookshop in Chesterfield. They closed years ago now. Was once sat in the lane out the back waiting for a book signing with about half a dozen others (we were early, it was Pratchett!) and a random woman appeared asking if we wanted a drink, we gladly accepted and she reappeared later with a tray full of coffee. Turns out she was the owner. My kind of book shop:(

LolaRennt · 17/08/2011 21:45

If parents can only afford the cheaper books at costco there is nothing wrong with that. It is shit however, to go and use a proper book shop as a library to mosey around, get reccomendations, see what you like, then buy it off Amazon after loudly slagging off the book shop off to your kids. If the people in your store had the nerve to say Costco is cheaper you should have asked them to fuck off back there then. I mean how stupid, people know that stores like ASDA and Costco and Amazon can afford to seel things cheaper, or even at a loss like ASDA did with Harry Potter to get people in shops!

I admit I love book shops, proper ones. Especially children's book stores. But I do buy most books used or off the internet as they are so expensive new. Nothing liek a new book though. New book smell Grin

Ooo I can come and visit you, you're not too far from me... and we love nothing more than children's book shops.
