to jack it all in and go and work in Waitrose?

Work is shit.

Parking is shit. I have to leave an hour before I need to to get a space and they charges are increasing by about 400% soon.

The IT department is run by monkeys who do not understand that I need certain access and will not give me the right stuff. I have been trying for an entire year now.

we are on our knees working as hards as humanly possible, trying to do our absolute best and then yesterday we were told we are having our numbers cut and will have to do the same amount of work with one less person.
I am scared someone will end up dead. I am scared that I will not do something important. I know that I will not be able to do what I need to.

It's trite but true - "you're a long time looking at the lid!"

If the job is making you feel this way, then it's the wrong job. Take control and start looking for something else.

Another trite one - "Nobody lies on their death bed wishing they'd spent more time at the office!".

It's hard even tO get into WaitrOse.

I resigned from my job without having another one to go to. It was DH who told me to resign as I was miserable there. I found a job but I am looking for another with better pay.

AYC - don't stick it out and suffer if you know in your heart of hearts that conditions will always be shit. If you feel it's temporary and things will get better eventually, then keep going but honestly, I went 9 years in one job, just hoping for the best and it never improved. I could weep when I think of all that time feeling pretty miserable when I should have and could have done something about it.

As for the IT department - they go to a special, secret school to learn how to be twats. Really, they are not called the IT department at all - they're called the Business Prevention Unit!

with the IT department- can you send an email explicitly in bullet points asking them to do what you need them to do, cc in your boss and someone in employee relations. give them a date it must be done by ie end of the week or you will take it further.

won't even be able to be independant soon because of the insurance/legalities issues.

I am just Shock and Sad that this is happening.

Jobs do have rubbish spells. Maybe things will pick up again?

IT departments are always run by power-crazed, self-centred monkeys who don't realise they are there to oil the wheels and serve the staff providing the front line cutomer service.

my midwifes (caseload) seem to really enjoy their jobs, im worrying now that secretly they hate coming to my house and having my 2 year old help them :(

On reading your first post I would have put money on you working in the NHS as a frontline member of staff.

We are on our knees, resources are scarce, paperwork/computer work is being added to daily, staff are going off sick with stress or posts are being cut, caseloads are being increased and all the while services are being moved/reconfigured/closed whilst managers are being 'found' posts which achieve nothing.

The thing is most of us can't leave, despite our fantasies about working in Waitrose, because we love the actual jobs we do and the patients, its all the other shit that crushes us.

Do you work for the NHS? If so and your IT issues are impacting on (or have the potential to impact on) your clinical work, tell IT the issues are becoming a clinical incident that you'll need to lodge a clinical incident form for. If they don't resolve it, then lodge form.

NHS IT is a law onto themselves. They have to support certain policies which the individual IT engineers might disagree with. The NHS IT engineers that I have met personally are lovely people and certainly not TWATS. They work in impossible conditions like the rest of the NHS.

I have left a job (as an IT technician) with nothing to go to. It is an extreme step and not to be taken lightly. I found that working in the public sector was a crock of sh!t. I didn't have the equipment I needed to do my job and my employer seemed to think I was Harry Potter and could magic out a brand new PC out of nothing.

I left my job because I worked with people who did not understand the IT department have feelings as well. (I worked in a school, but I have had close links with NHS IT support)

You need to approach the person responsible for authorising access in your department and let them deal with it.
I used to set up usernames with access rights and, believe me, just because someone says they need certain access doesn't mean that they do.
A case in point was in Northern Ireland some years ago. User access to names and addresses was strictly controlled for security reasons. Whenever the person responsible for authorisation was away, I had loads of requests from Customer Services trying to get access they weren't entitled to.

I do agree that public sector IT support is ridiculously underfunded.

Lots of money for wowy IT projects in schools but bugger all for the day to day support and equipment replacement. Very poor.

Frankly I think the NHS is going to be severely damaged by this government and its 'reforms'.
