to think I should not be threatened with a ban for questioning the use of offensive language?

I am a member of a very heavily moderated website. Swearing is not allowed at all, threads are pulled regularly if people are mean to each other, not threads about threads are tolerated and you are not allowed to mention anything said before on the boards at all. All these things will result in deletion and warnings.

I have been a member for years (before mumsnet even). There was a particularly nasty thread that was allowed to go on for pages which ended with a woman referring to children with LDs as 'being tapped in the head'..

I started a seperate thread wanting to discuss the use of disabilist language on the site and asking why words like bitch, whore and piss were not allowed yet retard, mong and spaz were.

I was told that some people might think it was ok to use those words so they couldnt filter them out, it wouldnt be fair.

I continuned to question this in a firm but polite manner and have now discovered I have been sent a message telling me that my style of posting is offensive and I have been taken straight to a final warning!

Not that I give a toss, the site is crap. I guess I am taken aback that you can be pretty much threatened into silence if you dare question the mods on this HUGE and well known site.

Its an issue that means a lot to me. If it was a site on which everything went language wise I wouldnt have bothered. But on this prissy site where you cant say bugger - you can call something retarded or monged out with no bother.

I think its bollocks and makes me glad I have mumsnet to come and tell people to fuck off on. Grin

Oh and that's for swear words. If you want to swear you have write shít or fúck otherwise you get starred.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 16/08/2011 16:34

Sorry just had a deliverery from Ocado asda

I do genuinelly think these words should be disallowed. It is important to me. I mention the non swearing thing because I think it illustrates the site's priorities are skewed.

I also think it would send out a very strong message if someone casually typed in 'you Retard' and it came out as 'You '.

I have a kid with a disability, my OH is disabled and I work with disabled children. This is an issue that is very important to me.

And Netmums has been fucking me off for years.

Oh I do love you lot. Have you seen the amount of people lurking at the bottom of the thread.

It would be funny if it were not such an important issue.

(actually it is a bit funny anyway)

oooh, the twats!
Angry

tehy said they can't ban mong, spaz or retard because people migth use words that contain them (like lemongrass), but i've just posted some words like cockeral to prove that cock is only not allowed when it's a whole word, and so snigger is also allowed.

the fucking rancid liars!!! Angry

The fact that they have actually lied is so incredibly pathetic. I am lost for words.

QuintessentialShadow · 16/08/2011 16:45

You do know that if you deregister they are no longer bound by their own terms and conditions, and can share information about you among other posters and themselves, by the way. Do not dereg....

nickelbabe · 16/08/2011 16:45

MrsD - that thread couldn't be read without being logged in.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 16/08/2011 16:46

Thing is on MN, if you challenge a MNHQer they generally respond in an intelligent and/or funny sarky way. I have yet to see them take something personally.

Challenge a decision on NMs and the Mods come out in full passive agressive mode whinging about how hard they work and how many kids they have etc.

It is impossible to have a debate because you are silenced by the 'dont have a go at me I am doing my best despite having 2 children and having to cook the tea' attitude.

I am trying to discuss the policy of a major internet business concern and I am getting individual women taking offence.

quintessentialshadow Shock has this happened?

thefirstMrsDeVere · 16/08/2011 16:47

Thats a shame nickle. You are missing a raft of fascinating, intellectual discourses on a daily basis.

(not really)

Years ago. I left nearly 6 years ago, but did not dereg for that very reason. It happened to somebody else that deregged before me....

nickelbabe · 16/08/2011 16:48
Grin mmmm.

I had a NM account before I had a MN one.
I preferred it over here. (the unintelligible "english" made my teeth itch)

Pendeen · 16/08/2011 16:49

PinotsKittens

Sounded awfully contrived to me but I'll take your word for it.

QuintessentialShadow · 16/08/2011 16:49

Sorry, less than 6 years. My memory fail me, I am ancient.

cornsilx · 16/08/2011 16:49

that's awful! what did they do?

thefirstMrsDeVere · 16/08/2011 16:49

Even if you do not dereg how can they tell you that you cant share info on other sites? Do they think they are MI5? Will they send a car round with tinted windows to seize my laptop? If they do will they let me keep the Dr Who sticker?

QuintessentialShadow · 16/08/2011 16:50

I cant remember. Something minor.

At the time somebody had set up another site questioning stuff, I was not part of that, and as far as I know, the other people were not either. But lots kicked off at that time. Something to do with charitable stuff. But I dont remember the details.

YANBU. Netmums is full of fuckers.

PortBlacksandIsLovelyInAutumn · 16/08/2011 16:57

They might install a virus on your laptop instead. One that makes every webpage you visit have vomit-us colours, galloping smilies and a ticker telling you how many days since you were a Very Norty Girl....
