To not want my maternity leave to be one long NCT group competition

First it was the birth, then which baby was drinking the most "hungry baby" milk, then which baby was sleeping through the night.....

We have now apparently moved onto weaning and which baby is eating the most carrot puree. Just to add that all our babies are between 4 and 5 months old and only 1 has been advised to start weaning early by their GP. As the lone "milk only" mother in our group I was asked over the weekend if I planned to breastfeed my son until he was 10!

AIBU or just bitter that so far DS and I have come last in each round

I think everyone has to remember that each child is different, and that milestones are total shite (except in extreme cases). But a lot of first time mums are insecure so tend to boast, even if they don't mean it as boasting.

I'd just ignore it.

Ah, NCT (Shudders).... just keep up with the Mums you like.

Whatmeworry · 17/08/2011 11:55

Would add that its mainly 1st Time Mums with PFB syndrome that do this, once you have had more kids and realise they all develop different skills at different ages you tend to get more blase.

The best part of my local NCT was the working mothers group, who met one evening a month at someones' home. There was no competition or judging, just advice and support for those juggling family and career. We would discuss all the things that were difficult, and try and find solutions for each other, rather like mumsnet. Much more to my liking than the baby and toddler group, which I never felt comfortable at.

Girly, that sounds interesting. Did you form a group informally or was it a formal NCT thing?

I could do wiht that kind of group.

SootySweepandSue · 17/08/2011 18:59

Just to reply to Breatheslowly - you'd have thought so but 1 girl actually avoided me! She wanted a girl and also couldn't stand to be around pregnant people as her birth was traumatic...

I do think there is a job for the NCT to try harder to group together more similar people. There's a ton of groups near me so it would be possible somehow if someone with an eye for people was in charge.

YANBU. Mind you, you have found a rare NCT group there. Hungry baby milk! Bet your NCT teacher is well pissed off that they have not all got their babies chained to their nipples, lol. Grin
