Are you scared of what might happen tonight? How can it be controlled? I am more than a bit scared of what will come from all of this.

OP posts:
LauLauLemon · 09/08/2011 18:45

Beyond, I'm in Maindee so pub central and God knows what could happen with all these shops and so close to town.

My sister and dad are on one of the estates too where I grew up so scared for them. Saw two riot vans and one ambulance raring up Chepstow Road so I don't know whether it was unrelated or whether we should be expecting trouble. Cardiff has closed early and is preparing so I guess we should too :(

HermioneRocks · 09/08/2011 18:47

No didn't see anything, was just watching the kids who were on a ride when the ride operator stopped the ride and said they had instructions to shut down the rides and get everyone out as reports of riots had been received. I didn't hang around to find out I just grabbed the kids and got out of the city centre.

icancancan · 09/08/2011 18:48

thats what I'm worried about ledkr. my sister and her partner nearly had their door kicked in by 18 youths last night in handsworth, birmingham. luckily my 15 yr old niece had been sent to a friends in a quieter part of the city. i feel sick with fear (and anger) for them right now. the police did not respond and the woman next door with a 7 yr old had her door kicked in and was looted. I have begged them to leave - its only possessions. my sister has hauled two sofas up against her front door and is saying she has worked so hard for her house and things that she is not going to let it go up in smoke. how has it come to this? complete lawlessness even against your neighbours?? I am shaking with rage .........

RitaMorgan · 09/08/2011 18:50

We were slap bang in the middle of it in Bristol last night - it was noisy but I didn't feel unsafe. I am concerned but not worried at the moment.

TheBride · 09/08/2011 18:52

I worry that if the police dont stop the looting soon, people will start taking the law into their own hands to protect their property and we will get stabbings and shootings and batterings etc.

Footage of W Bromwich on the beeb- looters helping themselves whilst the police watch. wtf?

psiloveyou · 09/08/2011 18:53

No because I don't live in London. I am very worried for those that do.

What I am is angry at all the people listening to untrue rumours and scaremongering. There is a fire in a disused nightclub in our town. Facebook has gone crazy with people saying riots have started here. The local police are posting messages on Twitter every few minutes explaining it's all rumour and the fire is simply an accident. It seems that's not dramatic enough for some people and they are inciting anger on FB.

DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 09/08/2011 18:56

long as the jags and mercs are ok eh ILT? Seriously though don't blame them people's livelihoods are being destroyed left right and centre. Hope it stops tonight!

Mrsxstitch · 09/08/2011 18:57

I'm worried, DH isn't home yet and now I can't contact him. Can't contact Brother and SIL either :(.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 09/08/2011 19:00

LauLau, my BIL has just posted on FB that its started here... I'm not sure if he's joking or not
DH is in work and has to come through town on his bike in half hour to get home. I'm on Bettws btw

Mrsxstitch · 09/08/2011 19:04

OK DH back now but nearest trouble less than a mile away now.

AuntiePickleBottom · 09/08/2011 19:04

i live in wales, i am am worried.

some of the police force, from what i have seen on the news, are going to be sent up to london, the rate the riots are going i am scared it will hit cardiff and newport :(

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 09/08/2011 19:08

Auntie , me and Lau are in Newport, where are you??

LauLauLemon · 09/08/2011 19:08

Beyond let us know if reports turn out to be true in town. Bromwich is bad on TV, getting nervous. Maindee seems quiet so far no sirens as of yet but it's still very early. Hoping reports are false but there's buggar all in town anyway.

Hope DH is ok. Keep us updated. Will be online so feel free to inbox.

AuntiePickleBottom · 09/08/2011 19:10

in newport, Maindee area

LauLauLemon · 09/08/2011 19:13

Auntie close to me then. I heard the sirens when I was at the co-op around 6 and two riot vans went up. We're right by Villa Dino's so smack bang near a load of shops and pubs. Worried this will be a target and have two very young DD's asleep in bed.

Following Cardiff on Twitter and all seems calm. Any news on whether BIL's report was true Beyond?

Flisspaps · 09/08/2011 19:18

Yes, for my sister. She works in Birmingham, her store was raided and looted last night. One of the managers was beaten and only the self service tills were left undamaged as the rioters couldn't get into the cash boxes in them.

The store apparently opened today with just the four self service tills operating, and my sister is expected to turn up tonight as normal :(

Flisspaps · 09/08/2011 19:19

We on the other hand, are lucky enough to have an EDL march scheduled to take place here on Saturday :(

youarekidding · 09/08/2011 19:26

PSIloveyou there are reports of S'ton and P'mth having riots as Hants police are going to London. I don't think we are near enough to centres to be affected if they do. I wonder if it all stems from the fire in G?

I hope all of you in London especially are OK. Is there maybe somewhere a thread can be sorted for people who are at immediate risk or fearful of it? - maybe somewhere to come here for immediate advice/ support?

My friends DSD is from Epsom and she is due home at the weekend. She may be staying longer and if needs be her mum/ SD and sisters will come down to stay with friend and her DH.

Very very Sad and Angry about it. ((unMN)) hugs to those that need them.

LauLauLemon · 09/08/2011 19:36

Auntie and Beyond according to friends all is calm in Newport and Cardiff. Three riot vans on Queen St in Cardiff to prepare but fine right now.

AuntiePickleBottom · 09/08/2011 19:37

thank-you

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 09/08/2011 19:37

DH is home, came off his bike, but just cause he's a doughnut, not cause of rioters.

Worried about my sister in Crawley, her and her DF were both sent home from work today.

craftynclothy · 09/08/2011 19:37

I'm a little worried. Am in Leeds where there's no rioting yet despite loads of twitter rumours cos of lots of police about for footie match tonight. Am mostly worried it might kick off after the match and dh is working late tonight in the city centre until 10pm. Won't be going to bed until he's home.

Nancy66 · 09/08/2011 19:38

It's already much, much quieter than it was at this time yesterday.
I think the worst of it is over

MissBetsyTrotwood · 09/08/2011 19:43

Seems quieter here tonight (Hackney) but I'm watching Manchester. 'Pitched battles'. Poor poor people.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 09/08/2011 19:45

Apparently (from a friend, not BIL) there are riot vans in town (Newport) and they are expecting it to kick off at about 8. Could well just be rumours though...
