It's out of control now and surely such Armed Forces as we have left should be getting right in there putting a stop to it? At the moment there is no reason at all for restraint. I'm shocked - and I lived through the '76 riots in Johannesburg.

If they could cope they would already be in control! If they could cope they would already be in control!

wELL cUSTOMARDO YOU CAN MOCK but the police have not handled it that great so far. Now they realise it is serious (3RD NIGHT!) perhaps things will change if they have the manpower. As I have said earlier the Met don't F about once they get started.

But if they dont, if there are huge problems elsewhere in other areas, who knows the Army may be called in.

In the meantime, perhaps political will and police adrenalin and organisation will finally kick into place. If not .... well thats another Mumsnet discussion.

canyou · 08/08/2011 22:54

The UK military are all over the world, keeping peace, building communities, training police forces, killing is so far down the list of what they do it is hardly worth noting.
They are trained for dealing with civil unrest, sad as it may seem to say get the military The military police could offer a boost to regular police numbers esp if this continues and or spreads. Policing with in the law can be done by the military as well as by the regular forces.

Tiredmumno1 · 08/08/2011 22:55

How the hell is it ridic???

Look at what they are doing ffsHow the hell is it ridic???

Look at what they are doing ffs

Bohica · 08/08/2011 22:57

Why is it ridic Custardo? Most people have no rl connectioms with the police & army so we will have no idea what to expect, all I know is it appears to be out of control & when you hear a grown man cry on sky news because his 5 generation buisness has been burnt to the ground by yobs it makes people want to call for more help.

No FFS about it imo, it's scary from here.

ChumleeIsMyHomeboy · 08/08/2011 22:57

Still waiting for Custardo's strategy

watching this on the news - this is now getting seriously out of control. It is only a matter of time before someone is killed.

asecretlemonadedrinker · 08/08/2011 22:59

Yes, it really is a matter of time. These people don't care! There are children in these cities, these buildings they are smashing and burning... All for a few ipods and a few chocolate bars!

ChumleeIsMyHomeboy · 08/08/2011 22:59

I agree going - it's quite astonishing that that hasn't happened yet.

Tortington · 08/08/2011 23:01

well it be raining on thursday , so no rioting in the rain mark my words

ShellyBoobs · 08/08/2011 23:01

Some people are missing the point.

The police aren't unable to cope. The reason the rioting hasn't been supressed yet is that the police haven't been fully deployed.

Pressumably someone has decided that there is a better way than sending the full weight of the police service in. Whatever the reason may be, they certainly haven't yet been sent in with the numbers and equipment that could be mustered.

ChumleeIsMyHomeboy · 08/08/2011 23:06

Ok Shelly - who says the police haven't been fully deployed? Only I want to know which fuckwit is sat scratching their bollocks whilst London burns?

OP posts:
Bohica · 08/08/2011 23:06

Going the news arn't showing any updated footage now it's all what happened a few hours ago so who knows what & where now.

We need a yes or no from the powers above for our police force, I want a yes & I want it now. Lets claim back what is left & start recovering as much as we can for the poor families & buissnesses affected.

I also pray for heavy rain.

LeonardNimoy · 08/08/2011 23:07

I do hope the Army is not "called in". The police should be sorting this out and the armed forces (not just the Army) certainly have enough on their plates. DH is in the Army and I have read some absolutely disgusting comments on mumsnet about the Army and their families. I'm totally tickled that 3 days of unrest is all it takes for us to become flavour of the month...

EdithWeston · 08/08/2011 23:08

I suspect that the police may be waiting until most bystanders will have gone home (it's about closing time now), and may change tactics soon.

It would explain the "where are your children?" warning - get them home; suppression of rioting isn't pretty.

You don't need an Act of Parliament to call in the Armed Forces (see the page I linked in an earlier post).

But the Armed Forces - as LtEve said, aren't a panacea. I can see some role for them - if the police/Home Office requested it (eg protecting other emergency services, possibly manning cordons - so the police can move on and actually do the policing).

LeonardNimoy · 08/08/2011 23:08

I wish I could "like" Custardos comment about the rioting stopping on Thursday when it rains!

goingbacktowork · 08/08/2011 23:09

controversial comment and not that important today - but NO WAY should we have the Olympics here now. What a non civised country we have shown ourselves to be on world stage this week.

Have you seen the pictures if Croydon burning - catastophic.

ChumleeIsMyHomeboy · 08/08/2011 23:10

That makes sense Edith - that's more the kind of thing I was wondering. Obviously nobody wants them to go in and start deploying scud missiles ffs but sitting around praying for rain, worthy a cause though it is, isn't going to help anything until it rains. Which it isn't and which we can't make it.

OP posts:
goingbacktowork · 08/08/2011 23:11

rumours on another thread:

rumours peckham police station has been set alight!

ChumleeIsMyHomeboy · 08/08/2011 23:12

Don't worry. I'm sure it will rain sometime.

OP posts:
Tiredmumno1 · 08/08/2011 23:14

Shelly so third night of rioting and they havent fully deployed the police yet, i dont believe that.

I think some people are missing the point that they cant cope.

As bohica said it was heartbreaking to listen to that poor man breakdown

tigana · 08/08/2011 23:16

Just feeling so sorry for the people who have had their homes, belongings (and businesses) burnt... for no 'reason'... they aren't a symbols of authority or full of unattainable goods...(please don't call me on whether are 'valid reasons' for what is happening... just saying)

[rain dance]

Agree, goingbacktowork. Personally I think the whole Olympics thing was a disaster. Like putting a plaster over a rotting corpse.
