..to expect a dinner plate to fit in the microwave?

Just bought a new microwave. A standard Morphy Richards jobby. Our dinner plates don't fit! I googled standard dinner plate size and it says 9" (10" for restaurant and 11" for posh restaurant). Our plates (Sainsbury's I think) are about 10.5".
I went to Tesco to get some more and they were also over 10".

We do have some plates which are a little smaller and they just fit.

There seems to be an inconsistency between standard microwave size and the dinner plate size you buy from supermarkets. AIBU?

We only want cheap plates because we break them a lot!

Have just measured up: my dinner plates are 10" diameter; glass plate in Hitachi microwave is 12.5".

Can you take the new model back and exchange it for another with more generous internal dimensions? If not you'll have little choice but to heat food in suitable containers before serving it, or use large side plates - could be a useful aid to dieting

I really can't be bothered to take it back.
None of my family need to diet!

The one bonus of my IKEA microwave is that the glass plate is just over 15.5" wide.

After the hell that was having an IKEA kitchen fitted you have to make the most of the silver linings :)

Bonkers, be careful of sainsbos plates. I bought a dinner service for nine pounds and was heating up some milk so I could make Baileys hot chocolate. It didn't heat the milk but the mug reached a temperature of approximately one squillion degrees. I burnt my hand and the top of my foot and my kitchen smelt of sour milk. (disclaimer I am a slattern)

spider It never occurred to me that what I thought was a standard dinner plate would not fit in what I thought was a standard microwave. If I was buying a really budget microwave or had some fancy plates then I would have checked. The microwave is this. Oooo, just noticed they do a matching kettle and toaster

Does everyone check these things?

aubergine was the service marked as microwave safe? Sounds nasty.

Could be worse, our dinner plates didn't fit in our new kitchen cupboards (they fit in the microwave though).

OMG horse, that IS worse!

What's even worse is that my neighbour is having her kitchen redone while she's on holiday and the fitter told me yesterday that the oven doesn't fit in the recess due to him having to redo the electrics to meet current standards. It sticks out about an inch.

We have just bought and had installed a new dishwasher only to find that our dinner plates do not fit into it. Completely our fault for buying it when we were distracted and arguing about what we could afford rather than having a good look inside.

Oh don't, I once nearly bought a microwave steriliser for bottles that didn't actually fit in the microwave. I was standing in the queue with it at Mothercare and this bloke bowled up to me and said "you realise that wont actually fit in 90% of microwaves on the market" so I was like, thanks! and put it back. Duh. Stupid Mothercare.

I once had to take a dish drainer back because my plates were too big!
