building a damn that prevented small children from paddling in the estuary as you made it too deep one side and dry the other that you are a selfish twat that has no consideration for others?

Not only rough boys, who were rude to many Mums that intervened, but fully grown men organising the damn building.

Damn building is fine, it's a good activity, but then intimidating smaller children and mothers who wanted to remove the damns is shit. One builder, before lunch, did so and then would release the water swiftly with great excitement.

One father started shouting at me for removing one small damn that had been built and left for over ten minutes.

Then the rough boys came along and shouted at small children everytime they went near it.

Ruined lots of peoples' day, about four families left the beach altogether. Sad.

Going to the beach with small children is a challenge and so we picked one with an estuary, rockpools are fabulous but I can't hold enough hands and keep an eye on the older two whilst I slip along the rocks!!

I thought the dam building was fab too, all the children (mine too) were blocking and diverting water, all were having fun and cooperating without adult intervention. But when the men and older boys got involved it all turned rubbish, they were shouting at smaller children to not divert water and intimidating them.

I love dam building. It's brilliant!

If that makes me a bit sad I don't give a stuff. Why are only little children allowed to enjoy the beach?

charmouth is an enourmous beach both long and wide, Im sure there was plenty to go round and I find it hard to believe a dam from the surf to the rock walls could have been built blocking your path absolutely and completely.

TeiTetua · 03/08/2011 20:59

Charmouth, now there's a place with many happy associations. I'm sure I built dams there and fervently hope I never offended anyone.

The family fossil collection still exists. And hurrah for Mary Anning.

ThePosieParker · 03/08/2011 21:02

I did speak to three of the families, one had tried and failed to move rocks, the other two came to see if I was okay after the man had a go at me. They were gutted that the water was dry in one part and too deep in the other and so their small children couldn't play.

ok I see, the estuary. sorry, I suppose their attitude was pretty shit, but I would have just went else where.

hocuspontas · 03/08/2011 21:04

I prefer men and teenagers to be dam-building because it means I don't get a missed frisbee/tennis ball/beach ball/quoit hitting me on the head every 30 seconds. Grin

I'm in Charmouth for a week from Saturday, I'll look out for some more fisticuffs!

ThePosieParker · 03/08/2011 21:06

Noone has said dam building isn't great, it is. But building it to the point where children can't enjoy the water away from slippery rock pools and the sea is unreasonable. Surely the absolute pay off for dam building is releasing the water?

OP posts:
Sn0wflake · 03/08/2011 21:18

No I take it back they do sound like they were being twunts. I still always enjoyed the sea more. But with lots of younguns it can be hard. Its a shame it spoilt your day.

scottishmummy, I do wonder where you get the extra information from to draw bizarre conclusions.

The man from afar who I hadn't noticed before neither playing with children, building dams or whatever stared at me and then had a go at me..... How was that my fault?

Oh yes, of course I would.

Sorry I was objecting to the comment below that dam building was an activity for children only!

scottishmummy · 03/08/2011 21:36

and the rough children description was a funny aside

ThePosieParker · 03/08/2011 21:38

I love AIBU. People come, try to impress with avenues they create to disagree and then sum up the OP's personality based on a few sentences. Funny.

In the night....

What's wrong with going to a beach where there is an estuary? I go to the zoo but we don't play with the lions.
