I've just seen a post on facebook saying that someone is proud that their 6 week old baby has just eaten a whole jar of puree... Shock

Has anyone else seen examples of interesting parenting first hand that they thought were the stuff of MN myth? I honestly didnt think that people this, ahem, naive existed!

Hot chocolate last thing at night (before brushing teeth Grin) will make me buzz for hours and yet it makes some people sleepy.

I love water. I got dd started on water as refreshment when she was young. She dislikes juice and will only drink water or milk.
Fizzy drinks and juice are a no-no at our primary (or at least 'requested' as a no-no) which thankfully works perfectly for us.

HeatherSmall · 03/08/2011 23:05

Put a penny in a glass of coke and it comes up beautifully shiny and clean due to the coke disolving all the crap, i'm sure people have used it to clean ovens too. Teeth don't stand a chance do they ? Use a straw for all juice and drinks but water is the latest advice.

usualsuspect · 03/08/2011 23:07

I think we have the water message, thanks

You should right a smug parenting book to put all us crap mums on the straight and narrow

auntmargaret · 03/08/2011 23:08

I think you are all a bit up yourselves, tbh. Whats wrong with having a treat? My DD1 didnt get fizzy juice or any juice til she was around 2. After that, a fruitshoot once a week? So shoot me. Likewise a cola. Ever seen those parents at McDonalds tucking into chips and coke while their kids have carrots and water? That annoys me..a treat is a treat. Hate hate hate seeing baby bottles with juice in,though.

thecaptaincrocfamily · 03/08/2011 23:11

water is the latest advice, completely agree. However, on speaking to the hygeinist about my concerns that dd1 refused all water and would only drink very dilute apple juice she agreed that so long as teeth were well brushed it was more important for them to be hydrated, especially in summer. As I said neither of my dc have had any fillings or tooth problems because they always get well brushed Smile

thecaptaincrocfamily · 03/08/2011 23:12

completely agree aunt. I always had the rule that if they couldn't drink it from a glass then they couldn't have it. Grin

hardcolin · 03/08/2011 23:18

Treats are good. My dd will eat fruit and veggies until it comes out of her nose, and loves birthday cake (who doesn't) but what does she say when a doctor asked her what food she likes the best? Crisps! Love it. I didn't feel Blush and the doctor didn't bat an eyelid. I know at 4 yrs old she gets all the good-for-you foods as well.

I think I love you usualsuspect.

Instead of coke for upset tummies, try ginger in warm water, which is better health wise too.

There is sugar in everything these days and children's consumption is far too much, hence the incredible increase in childhood obesity. Children will develop larger fat cells as they put on weight which makes it harder to loose weight creating other health and mental problems, and there is a rise in type two diabetes in children. Long term high blood sugar levels is also found to increase chances of Alzheimer's.

GotArt · 04/08/2011 05:19

Not saying DD doesn't get cake or other baked goods, but I make them and control the ingredients

Okay so I just want to say that my friend has been advised by her very qualified nutritionist to give her 18 month old some fries and chicken nuggets as part of a fat high diet to build up her weight.

So I think some of these examples are really precious and wait till your child can make their own choices-come on you know they will prefer the coke to the pressed apple juice and the fries to the organic potatoe dumplings with tarragon.Once a baby is weaned a little of everything in moderation is acceptable to me- whilst I myself choose to avoid junk I don't condemn people who use it as part of a varied diet.

Lovesicecream · 04/08/2011 06:33

Ds2 8 was asked by the dentist what snacks he ate, he replied yoghurt after school before his dinner ( although sometimes he has fruit) she told me not to give him yoghurt, just fruit if he's hungry. I cannot for the life of me see what the problem is with a tiny tub of yoghurt ( only a couple of spoons in a pot ) I will not be listening to her and he will be having yoghurt as a snack I'f he chooses! Dd1 and 2 very rarly eat sweets, their just not interested and dd2 hardly ever has coke, prob when we go out for meals.

Even so I think some of the judge pants will be in for a shock when their dc's get older and they can't control what they eat, dd1 was lactose intolerant as a baby although now he's older he can tolerate it in small amounts, he is now 16 and goes out and buys milk and makes milkshakes even though he knows 9 times out of 10 it will give him the runs! ( I only let him have one glass of milk a day at home )

flimflammery · 04/08/2011 06:43

GotArt: 'Instead of coke for upset tummies, try ginger in warm water, which is better health wise too.'
No, the coke is for rehydration if the child has severe d & v. It has similar properties to electrolyte sachets you can buy. I was advised to drink Coke by a hospital doctor in Nepal when I had very bad d & v. Ginger in warm water might make you feel less nauseous, but it won't help if you are low in sugar and salt.

GotArt · 04/08/2011 06:49

Maybe because a lot of yoghurt has added sugar.

GotArt · 04/08/2011 06:50

Orange juice then flim

kittensliveupstairs · 04/08/2011 07:01

Getting away from food, I was on the bus yesterday (dead car) and a mum with three DC shouted in the face of her two YO, fuck off you stupid cunt, I've just scratched a star too many.
I am pretty well known for my liberal use of swear words, but that had me floored. Screaming at a little girl because you've fucked up your lottery scratch card is beyond horrible.

GotArt · 04/08/2011 07:03

Good grief!

CheerfulYank · 04/08/2011 07:05

Are you serious kittens ? I would have been beyond shocked!

kittensliveupstairs · 04/08/2011 07:12

Sadly, I am serious. The biggest tragedy was I seemed to be the only person shocked by it. And the little girl in question didn't seem too fussed either. I was pretty saddened and sickened that she seem inured to being spoken to like that.

nooka · 04/08/2011 07:17

Any sweetened drink will work as an electrolyte to some extent, but few of them have salt (it's the combination of sweet and salt is what makes things like dyrolyte taste disgusting) including coke. Sports drinks have salt in them, but you might as well drink any sweetened drink as you don't really need extra salt if you've just worked up a sweat. Drinking ginger is good if you are feeling nauseous, but not if you've really been ill. dh always swore by Lucozade for a pick up for poorliness (we can't get it here and have to make do with PowerAid or Gatorade both of which are IMO rather nasty).

Lovesicecream · 04/08/2011 07:27

I think there are worse things to be eating than yoghurt!
Milk and fruit also contain suger

JosieZ · 04/08/2011 07:33

There is constant articles in mags about healthy eating and recipes galore.

Presumably these folk are taken in by the adverts - if they are told coke is a 'great refreshing drink' then it is a great drink for babies too. If MacDonalds is a great family day out then fries are great meal for babies too.

That's all I can think.

I was brought up on the meat and two veg + pud is a good healthy meal and it's what I brought my kids up on. However after the menopause I immediately developed arthritis, particularly in my hands. Searched online and found the arthritis association diet - no red meat, no tea and coffee, lots of greens, fish, less alcohol - tried it and amazingly it worked within a couple of weeks. Previously believed all foodie types to be neurotic wooses. But made me wonder about our british diet and the amount of bad health and obesity here and how much it is due to diet.

Rillyrillygoodlooking · 04/08/2011 07:52

Blimey, it's official, I am a crap mum. I give my LOs lollipops, dh gives dd coke very occasionally (she is 2), they have chips when we are out, and I put dd in the back of a (deep) trolley yesterday with ds in the front seat, and she did indeed fall onto the concrete floor head first. I felt so guilty.

My worst parenting sin though, is that I don't brush their teeth every day. And I know very well the rules of good dental hygiene.
