It's more than a school holidays thing. It seems like a malicious attempt to hook people into a drama / DV / EA situation. It often seems to start with a dramatic first (ever) post and before you know it, it is 100 posts long and the OP is nowhere to be seen.

One of the things I love about MN is how supportive and ready to help people are when someone is in need, but I feel that perhaps we need to take a more cynical and questioning approach before offering our time and energy to support some brand new posters who take without giving back.

My hardhat is on and I have a Wine in hand.

OP posts:
Whatmeworry · 02/08/2011 22:06

How to tell - not surefire but:

  • controversial issue
  • poster with no history
  • way it's worded/set up doesn't quite ring true
  • someone by end page 2 writes "hmmm this seems like a wind up"

The box room one got quite interesting once it strayed off topic I thought but then I have a warped mind......

MrsGerardButler I agree with you about the fun but that's one of the drawbacks about forums.

MmeLindor the thread was deleted as it was posted by a previously banned member.

ChaoticAngeltheInnocentOne · 02/08/2011 22:32

*fun at mn's expense

MmeLindor. · 02/08/2011 22:37

Thanks, Chaotic and Lemon. I barely glanced at it and it was gone.

BitOfFun · 02/08/2011 22:40

Remind me what the OP of the cinema was?

FreudianSlipper · 02/08/2011 22:46

even if they are made up the advice might help someone else. i am not going to question someone or interrogate them because i am suspicious of their story, i might be wrong and that could be damaging and i know of some truths that are hard to believe

at times i do nto reply as others have said what i am going to

MrsGerardButler · 02/08/2011 22:47

IIRC, it was the poster who spent £35 on cinema tickets and there was a family with an autistic child in the row behind, who was disrupting the OP and her family. The OP spoke to the cinema manage and had autistic child and his family evicted from the cinema.

OP posts:
usualsuspect · 02/08/2011 22:49

There was another cinema one deleted as well

The one with the dp who was chucking pop corn

BitOfFun · 02/08/2011 22:50

Oh yes- I did hide that one. Jeremy Vine had discussed that exact scenario the day it was posted.

Feenie · 02/08/2011 22:51

The first one was spiderpig, who is a regular poster. The chucking popcorn was BigFishTinyFish.

usualsuspect · 02/08/2011 22:52

The OP of the autistic child one is still posting though ,so dunno if shes a troll or not

ShowOfHands · 02/08/2011 22:54

There are one or more trolls schlepping through relationships and aibu atm, posting the same old drivel in the same old style. Whether it's an invasion or holiday madness, I have no idea. Pees me off that people with genuine issues won't get the help they need. It's all going to come to a head soon I suspect.

usualsuspect · 02/08/2011 22:57

I don't believe half the threads I read on here now,it has got much worse recently

LoopyLoopsTootyFroots · 02/08/2011 22:58

But there are also some very distressed people who are either put off or feeling terrible about their issues because people don't trust them. Catch 22.

Whatmeworry · 02/08/2011 22:58

I seriously think a lot of market researchers, freelancers etc are using the boards now. Too many of the topics have that sort of feel.

Thruaglassdarkly · 02/08/2011 22:59

I started a thread on this!!! See post about Matthew Wright from earlier today.

usualsuspect · 02/08/2011 23:01

I know ,its a shame for the ones with genuine issues but what can you do? I ignore all dodgy looking threads mostly but I did get sucked in today by one

Whatmeworry · 02/08/2011 23:01

I posted there.

A lot of other discussion boards use "karma" or somesuch - voting from other members/moderators re trust - so its easy to tell who is real and who isnt.

IMO MN will need to move to that.

LemonDifficult · 02/08/2011 23:06

I hope there won't be a trust test - that would be awful. What if - for example - you've tentatively lurked on the pregnancy threads but now you've had a bleed and really do want some advice fast, and it's your first post? Some first posts will be dramatic.

HelenMumsnet · 02/08/2011 23:08

Hello. Please do report any ts and ts to us at MNHQ.

If they are trolls, we can deal with them; if they're spammers/researching for TV programmes, we can yell at them gently tell them the error of their ways.

But we won't know about them (probably) unless you report them to us.

Case in point: now that we know of the DP won't treat DD as his own thread, we're going to delete it.

BitOfFun · 02/08/2011 23:10

Perhaps those people should ring a doctor?

HelenMumsnet · 02/08/2011 23:10

Oh, and we may well have to delete some posts from this thread - if people have broken our Talk Guidelines by publicly naming specific posters as trolls (or ts).

PLEASE tell us about your concerns instead - it'll save us all a lot of time Smile

ShowOfHands · 02/08/2011 23:12

Heeeeleeeeen?

BitOfFun · 02/08/2011 23:12

Helen, did nobody report the penis troll to you? Because I find that quite surprising. Did you really not find anything at all, er, alarming about the OP?
