to think that Mumsnet is being hacked / invaded by t****s and t***s?

It's more than a school holidays thing. It seems like a malicious attempt to hook people into a drama / DV / EA situation. It often seems to start with a dramatic first (ever) post and before you know it, it is 100 posts long and the OP is nowhere to be seen.

One of the things I love about MN is how supportive and ready to help people are when someone is in need, but I feel that perhaps we need to take a more cynical and questioning approach before offering our time and energy to support some brand new posters who take without giving back.

My hardhat is on and I have a Wine in hand.

Hello. Please do report any ts and ts to us at MNHQ.

If they are trolls, we can deal with them; if they're spammers/researching for TV programmes, we can yell at them gently tell them the error of their ways.

But we won't know about them (probably) unless you report them to us.

Case in point: now that we know of the DP won't treat DD as his own thread, we're going to delete it.

Oh, and we may well have to delete some posts from this thread - if people have broken our Talk Guidelines by publicly naming specific posters as trolls (or ts).

We did. (And yes that thread was reported - eventually). And, without going into too much detail, she didn't just post about penises, you know.

We know we quote our Talk Guidelines ad nauseam but "we'd rather err on the side of being taken in than of accusing a genuine poster who's in need of support of being a troll."

End of lecture.

Me too BIWI. I had stopped reporting people when I got a bit of a snotty response on one of my reports. But I have reported one today.

Oooh, me to BIWI... Not 'bad' enough to report yet but suddenly prolific and a bit inconsistent.

Still worth reporting BelleDame (please). It's can be v helpful for us to build up a picture of what some people are up to...

I know what Shirley means about the snotty responses too- some emails back have a distinctly clipped and weary tone. I must haven sent a dozen detailed emails about a troll I had a brush with quite recently, and I didn't even get a reply at all to lots of them, which was quite off-putting. I know you're supposed to report, but I kind of worry that MNHQ are rolling their eyes at me sometimes and think I am just being a pain in the arse.

BOF: We aim to reply to every report. We're truly sorry if that hasn't been the case for you recently. If you can bear to mail us again at [email protected] and tell us who it was you were concerned about, we'll dig around and find out what happened.

And we definitely don't roll our eyes at you - or anyone else. We're positively grateful for any report like that.

Shock at this, Shirley. That's certainly not the sort of reply anyone should have got from us. We'd never want to discourage anyone from reporting any concern about anything.

Do MNHQ ever reply and tell you that yes, you have indeed found a Troll and they have been banned? I reported but didn't hear back after initial 'thank you' so I don't know if the Troll has gone forever or is just on holiday.

No, we don't tend to say anyone is definitely a troll/has been banned. For the simple reason that, very, very occasionally, we make a mistake and ban people who shouldn't have been banned - and, in cases like that, we'd hate for them to have been officially branded as a troll.

Helen, I have no idea what I did last week, was that July? Grin No, MN emailed me about a suggestion I made regarding the local boards. I replied and emailed again, on top of that email, asking a question. It was to a MN person's email, from my Outlook, not via the site. And it really wasn't earth-shatteringly important! Nothing to do with spotting trolls, I am too thick for that. Maybe it's a problem my end and you hate me
