To argue about pronunciation of garage

Jugglingjemima · 31/07/2011 12:07

I say garridge. Dp gets annoyed with this. He says garaje. I think that is French. I have asked him about what people enter into following a wedding. A marraje? I have asked him how the Queen travels on state occasions? In a carraje? Please clear this up before he gets into a raje, and I get into a ridge. (I have never had a garaje, nor a garridge, but sometimes I have had to take a car to a garridge)
(Don't say it doesn't matter; I have been practically housebound for the last two weeks)

oh balls the one with a mistake posted.. Blush

Jugglingjemima · 31/07/2011 13:01

barth or bath is a straightforward English/British regional accent thing. Garridge/garaje is an English/French thing.

Exactly, superjobee, the differences are just regional differences. There isn't a single correct way to pronounce bath or garage (plus many more english words).

tawrag · 31/07/2011 13:02

Juggling, garage is an english word now. It may come from french, but we use it as an english word, not a french one.

TidyDancer · 31/07/2011 13:03

Short A/long A bath is truly a regional pronounciation difference. Bathe is what you do while you're in the bath. You can say "I'm going to bathe in the bath" quite legitimately.

Question for Bath-ites. Do you pronounce the place name with a long or short A and is that subject to different pronounciations or should it always be said in one particular way?

Jugglingjemima · 31/07/2011 13:03

I told him last night that he was plain d'murd, but he didn't listen; he just corrected my accent.

Or grass.

( though it is barth/gr-arse/garridge)

superjobee · 31/07/2011 13:04

your right tawrag i think its because where i live bath is normal and garaj is not heard often hope no garaj sayers have taken offence!

tawrag · 31/07/2011 13:05

Call it a car shed if it's your own, or call it a fuelling station if it's one of those. But mainly, tell dp to grow up.

superjobee · 31/07/2011 13:05

the place bath is pronounced the same to me - short a

stupefy · 31/07/2011 13:08

Oh Tawrag chill out for fucks sake Confused

Jugglingjemima · 31/07/2011 13:10

I started the argument and I would posit that it is he who is being as arse, not an ass.

OP posts:
TidyDancer · 31/07/2011 13:18

Depends if you think he's behaving like a donkey or a backside? Grin

iklboo · 31/07/2011 13:19

Bath the place & bath the receptacle both pronounced the same.

tawrag · 31/07/2011 13:24

Biscuit, stupefy? Smile or maybe Wine?

Jugglingjemima · 31/07/2011 13:26

I would say 'arse', but I may wrong. Keep the donkeys out of it.

It's garridge. like has been said, rhymes with marriage etc

However, garage is a french word, so since it's us that have corrupted it. we can't really complain when people pronounce it properly. We nicked it from the french and made it our own, fair enough. But how arrogant to then turn round and say that our way of pronouncing it is the right way, and the way it is pronounced in the language we nabbed it from is wrong!

kirsty75005 · 31/07/2011 13:55

Chambers dictionary lists both as correct (and there are 2 different correct pronunciations of the garaje version, apparently.)

And if Chambers says so...

lashingsofbingeinghere · 31/07/2011 17:23

I sort of meld the two vowel sounds - garredge. Does that make me middle class?

tawrag · 31/07/2011 17:35

So is it wrong to say Paris in an English way, or poncey to say it in a French way when one is speaking English?
Likewise, envelope. Is it ongvlopp (sorry, can't do the phonemes very well; you see what I'm getting at, n'est-ce pas?) or envelope a la anglais? Wink

alowVera · 31/07/2011 17:38

Ga-ridge.

Shinyshoes1 · 31/07/2011 17:40

Bandwithering · 31/07/2011 17:43

MrsBaggins · 31/07/2011 17:50

valiumredhead · 31/07/2011 17:50
