To argue about pronunciation of garage

Jugglingjemima · 31/07/2011 12:07

I say garridge. Dp gets annoyed with this. He says garaje. I think that is French. I have asked him about what people enter into following a wedding. A marraje? I have asked him how the Queen travels on state occasions? In a carraje? Please clear this up before he gets into a raje, and I get into a ridge. (I have never had a garaje, nor a garridge, but sometimes I have had to take a car to a garridge)
(Don't say it doesn't matter; I have been practically housebound for the last two weeks)

garaje is poncy twattish just like vayz instead of vaz . it is pronounced garridge where im from.

Jugglingjemima · 31/07/2011 12:40

(to reiterate that I have barely been out of the house for 2 weeks, so bear with me)... dp says that 'garridge' is 'lazy'. Surely garridge takes more effort, pronuciation wise, than garaje? He had porraje for breakfast today. When the dc come back from mum's, we will spend a rainy day making a collidge out of random bits of fabric.

OP posts:
Jugglingjemima · 31/07/2011 12:42

Although, now I think of it, dp did not go to collidge at all.

Sorry Tidy, it's just that when I see sloppy mistakes in written English, it really gets my goat, especially when the person making the mistake is so critical of others.

TidyDancer · 31/07/2011 12:45

Vayze instead of Varze is very much an Americanism, it's not poncy twattish.

Perhaps garage is just a regional thing. If you said garridge where I live, it would definitely be poor spoken word, so DP would be right.

He's soooooooo wrong about porridge though, that's just common sense! That is pronounced how it looks. And how clever your DCs are to have made a whole entire educational institute out of random bits of material!

TidyDancer · 31/07/2011 12:45

Yes, I get it Tricky. You're a grammar pedant. How clever you are.

stupefy · 31/07/2011 12:47

Yeah wannabe poshos say garraje.

Not sure about collage though.. That is collarje isn't it? It's not a collidge that's for sure.

stupefy · 31/07/2011 12:48

Where do you live Tidy?

I bet the Queen says garridge.

PeopleCallMeTricky · 31/07/2011 12:48

Fucks sake Tidy, it was meant to be a light-hearted comment, you know, you criticise the way some people pronounce garage, I point out you made a slight mistake in your post, we all laugh. Calm down dear Hmm

TidyDancer · 31/07/2011 12:49

I am calm thanks sweetheart. :)

Perhaps you ought to take some of your own advice though! Grin

Jugglingjemima · 31/07/2011 12:49

I say collarge for fabric stuck on sugar paper and I don't know anyone who doesn't. It is the place for the car that is causing ridge.

OP posts:
superjobee · 31/07/2011 12:50

collage is collaje college is collij same with porridge thats porrrij, also garaj where im from is considered poncy twattish only wannabe poshos and nobbers say it and would probably lead to a kicking in certain parts of town

PeopleCallMeTricky · 31/07/2011 12:50

Perhaps Grin

TidyDancer · 31/07/2011 12:50

It would be interesting to know wrt the Queen, stupefy! I hope she doesn't though!

I am in Herts. Am definitely not posh though! Grin

stupefy · 31/07/2011 12:52

We ought to write her a letter Grin

TidyDancer · 31/07/2011 12:54

Ooh yes! From the MN collective. We must know, it is a matter of national security. Riots may start.

Jugglingjemima · 31/07/2011 12:55

@Tidy, I hope that you are not taking the pissidge. I can't change now. This may have implications for my impending marraje.

You park in a garaje, but might listen to garridge.

tawrag · 31/07/2011 12:55

Both pronunciations are correct. There's also a third one, which is also correct. You can argue till the cows come home about personal preferences but the fact remains that there is more than one correct pronunciation of this word and many others. People who make a fuss are just intolerant.

tawrag · 31/07/2011 12:57

You might as well argue about whether bath with a long 'a' or bath with a short 'a' is correct. Both are.

Jugglingjemima · 31/07/2011 12:57

But dp says that garridge is 'lazy'. It takes more effort to say garridge that garaje.

OP posts:
TidyDancer · 31/07/2011 12:57

TheQueen is right. The music is definitely pronouced garridge.

superjobee · 31/07/2011 12:59

how do you pronounce bath with a long a? like baaaarth? isnt that a regional english thing? or bathe? bathe is different to bath you run/draw a bathe then you bathe in the bath..

superjobee · 31/07/2011 13:00

tawrag · 31/07/2011 13:00

Tell dp to go find something important to fuss about and not to be insulting. Tell him you like being lazy and will he please go away and let you get on with some work.
