To get annoyed with DH for putting ketchup on every meal?

Not at all. It's foul stuff, suitable only for making pitta pizzas with. Don't buy it any more, end of issue.

That would drive me mad too.. my SonInLaw does it, even on a sodding roast dinner... bleurghhh.

YABU. Why wouldn't you want him to use thed stuff that enhances his enjoyment of a meal?

Just because you don't like food covered in ketchup, doesn't mean he should automatically like his food the same way.

Ketchup is showing to be beneficial in guarding against prostrate cancer (as well as other factors) because of the concentration of lycopene in cooked tomatoes.

So at least there may be health benefits.

YANBU. My DH always puts ketchup on spicy bean burgers and spag bol, sometimes plain pasta. Drives me nuts.

My dad used to cover every hot pudding with milk:

Rice pudding
Apple pie and custard
Eve's pudding

All floating in a fecking sea of milk. Used to make me want to hurl.

Mine puts salad creme on lasagne and ketchup on curry. Strange man.

I agree with you OP - my DH does this, as does all his family. My DCs have now started doing it too. Drives me mad - I think it is very rude to put ketchup on something home cooked, an insult to the cooking IMO. It should be reserved for chips and bacon butties.

I'd be really angry about that. If I cooked tasty things he'd damn well better not put ketchup on it.

WE have a friend who does this, ketchup gets hidden whenever he comes over.

Actually my 8 year old son has started doing this and IMO its a bad habit. I don't mind it on chips, spaghettie bolognese or chicken nuggets - but I have seen him drown nearly everything in tomato sauce recently: urgh!!!. I agree its kind of insulting when you have gone to so much trouble cooking fresh foods....

I have sort of tried to ban him from using it on EVERYTHING, just the above foods, by saying if he does it I just won't buy it any more and it seems to work.

But I don't think you can do that with an adult, can you !!!?

TheDH doesn't but the DS would given half a chance and he hasn't even been brought up with it on the table. Slight improvement though I had to break the DH from licking his knife and plate - at least the DS's wife will only be able to blame the MIL for the ketchup and I don't even think I'm culpable. We have the same discussion every time he asks "DS - unless it's something with chips, ie, sausages, omolette, fried fish, chicken fillets, it's disgusting". "Yeh, well you're not eating it mum and it's my choice and it's what I want". He's 16 by the way and certainly wasn't brought up to do it - maybe it's just because he knows it winds me up. I don't think he does it in company - they always tell me how impeccable he is - huh - don't see it here .

Doesn't bother me but it can be awkward in restaurants when they spend ages hunting some down and then return to the table, with a tiny little pot.

He uses a quarter of a small bottle on steak and chips alone

I don't understand how people get annoyed by how someone else enjoys their food. It's not as if he's trying to cover your dinner in ketchup is it?

My DS has food with his ketchup.
And LineRunner I do Heston Blumenthal chips and they are legendary.

I do limit DS's ketchup intake because its not good for the teeth but if it's with a meal it's allowed.

See it from his point of view. He didn't cook it so doesn't appreciate what went into the cooking. He possibly sees food as fuel. He doesn't have a refined palate. He's too old for you to educate his palate.Cook him basic and plain food, sounds as if he wouldn't care if you did and then you're not setting yourself up for a fall.

Just ignore him with his ketchup if all else is ok with your relationship.

There are several ketchup fiends in our family. My db babysat many years ago - the deal was we delivered a takeaway for him (in lieu of payment) prior to heading off for a night out.

One night he was massively frustrated that there was a brand new bottle of ketchup in the cupboard but he could not figure out the child proof lock to actually reach it!

My uncle once returned to his hotel, with fish and chips (too late for restaurant at the hotel) and harrassed the receptionist for ketchup. She was only able to locate tiny sachets which were insufficient apparently.

Mine puts hot sauce on everything and I find it totally bum clenchingly, teeth itchingly infuriating. I cook from scratch a lot and find it really insulting that he feels he has to annihilate all other flavours from his meal. I'm not Michelin starred or owt but it's really not that bad.

Mind you, he even does it when he cooks so I shouldn't take it too much to heart.
