to wish people would stop saying "such a waste of talent"....

in reference to Amy Winehouse. She was more than a talent, but a person, and someone's daughter

It would be sad even if she wasn't talented. My granny was talented, but I didn't worry about her talent when she died, I was sad about HER.

Old and Grumpy? Probably.

I'm sure you know what people mean. A tragic waste of life but she was a talented young woman.

Not everyone expresses themselves in the same way.

How about the 90+ talented young people who had their lives ripped from them by a nut job with a gun? Where are all the "what a waste of talent" comments there?

Well, I didn't know her. I knew her talent. So I suppose most people are saying that they will miss what she might have given to the world of music. And it is a waste. It's just a way of saying it's a damn shame that such a gifted young woman has died.

I didn't know her so can't comment on her as a person, but I could hear her talent and agree it is a waste.

I worked in a situation where a boy was murdered. Every reference to him in the press mentioned he was an A grade student. Actually, he wasn't. He was a lovely, lovely boy, but his grades were very average. It annoyed me so much that it was seen as a worse murder because he was A grade. What the hell had that to do with it?

Amy Winehouse, to me, was immensely talented but in the end it will be her friends and family that miss her the most, far more than any of her fans.

General Just because someone is discussing Amy Winehouse, doesn't mean they haven't discussed/thought of the poor victims and their families in Norway.

Same as anyone discussing the victims in Norway, haven't necessarily forgotton all those dead/suffering in Africa.

She was a young woman of 27 in the public eye. Doesn't matter if she was famous, my thoughts are with her parents......

I feel really sad about her death. Not just for the waste of such a talent but because she was only 27 and despite her gifts obviously felt so shit about herself that she committed slow suicide with drug and alcohol abuse.

It's a bloody shame.

I'm sad about it because I enjoyed her music, her talent. To me it is a waste of talent as I hoped to enjoy her new music in years to come.

I really don't understand this weeping and wailing of the death of a celeb but this kind of thing does annoy me a bit. They'll report on the news about a teenage lad being murdered and then keep harping on about how he was a talented footballer or such like. Makes it sound as if the death of a young lad who wasn't a talented footballer isn't as tragic.

As for Amy, very sad, very sad for her family and friends but I'm certainly not going to cry over her. I'll save that for the people I know and love.

It wasn't a massive loss to the music industry really.

She hasn't released anything in forever and all her live get ups were terrible.

Still it's sad she died and it's a massive loss to people who cared for her I imagine.

General why even mention it, the 2 incidents are not the same, start a different thread, as its not just them tragedies that happened recently, we could say what about the poor people murdered in manchester hosp, or a lot of people were injured in a head on crash in china yesterday, however this thread isnt about any of those its to do with amy.

What a waste of talent.

This is very sad news for all her family and friends, for me, I am not mourning her, but am sad that any yuong person, aprticularly one such as AW, who had towering talent, an apparently supportive family, no money worries allowed herself to become an addict and ruined her life and eventually her health. I speak as someone whose brothe died of alcohol realted liver disease at 35 - he was not a towering talent, just an ordinary guy who made the wrong choices, I mourned him for him, but also for the waste of a relatively young life

Why? A member of the public will say that she had tremendous talent (if they thought she did). What they can't legitimately say is that they're 'grieving' or 'devastated' or 'bereft' or any other ridiculously inappropriate feeling. Those are reserved for her family and friends. Of course she was a person but most of us just know of her music and never knew her personally.

I personally loathe the flower-dropping and hysterical behaviour. I think it's beyond the pale and shows no respect whatsoever and makes me very angry.

I've had my 'Back to Black' album playing in the car for several weeks now (it's stuck in the player Blush) and now I just think of her talent and wish her peace. No histrionics necessary.

I feel gutted she won't make more beautiful music. I am sad about that. As I didn't know her personally, I don't feel desperately sad myself but I can imagine just how dreadful it is for her family and friends.

Someone on my Facebook said last night "She was fucking selfish, all her fans wanted was music and she couldn't even manage that."

As other people have said here, most people talking about her death don't know her and have never met her. But they have seen her on TV and in the press and listened to her music.

So the biggest part of her that they can relate to is her talent, and yes it is a waste. It's also a waste of a young life and all that she could have done with it in the future.

It would be wrong to try and hijack her family's grief by claiming a part of it, as LyingWitch said, nobody here knew her so we are not really grieving her death or the loss of her as somebody we really knew. But we can still be very sad for her, for what happened, for her family, and to wish that things were different and to agree that it is a waste of her life and her talent, which happened to be a public one. That's about all anyone who didn't know and love her properly can honestly say about her death. It is a tragic shame and a terrible waste of life and talent and her family must be devastated by there loss.

I doubt the parents are thinking about her talent right now - they're thinking about their daughter, the person she was, not how she sung.

But for the rest of us - all we really knew was how she sung. All we saw, bar what was in the tabloids, was her talent. So of course that's what we'll miss - I didn't know her, I knew her voice.
