To not get Las Vegas?

Someone I know has just gone on honeymoon there; another friend has also gone there with her family for their annual holiday.

As far as I can tell, it's a city full of casinos, a fake Eiffel Tower and a fake Grand Canal.

Sounds hellish.

What am I missing? Confused

I think Vegas is one of those places you should go once in a lifetime, it's an experience. And even then you wouldn't want to go for more than 3 days.

Tbh I don't really get people who go to the same place every year either, there is so much to see and experience in this world.

Not on my to do list either- not sure why anyone would want to spend their holidays either looking around hotels they aren't staying in, or cooped up in a giant casino.

There are 100s of places on my list in the US before I would get to Las Vegas!

I have been (in fact I got married there). It was a very different holiday for us - we normally go ski ing in winter and then independent travel to very remote greek islands in the summer or similar. I wasn't sure what to expect but I actually loved it. You need to take it for what it is - a great big ball of tacky, glitzy fun. I am not sure I would go back but it is an experience. A week is possibly too long there tbh but it has to be seen to be believed! T

Its on my to do list. I just want to spend 2 nights there to say ive done it.

Lots of places are hell but we still visit them

I don't see the attraction of gambling. It's the WASP in me - you earn money, you don't expect it to fall into your lap. Grin

Increasingly I find I don't get most things that seem to interest other people. Which means I probably talk less than I used to. Which may be a blessing. Grin

I love it there. It all depends on what you find as fun. For me it is the scorching hot weather, the fantastic themed hotel/casino's, the amazing buffets at said establishments... the cabaret and entertainment all down the strip.

The atmosphere is like one huge party day and night, and thats without doing any gambling.

It can be tacky, it can also be utterly glamorous, depending on which hotel you are in.

We only go for a few days, and then travel around to other places on the West Coast too, as they are only a few hours drive away through amazing scenery.

It isnt really the sort of place to go with small kids or even teens really as they wouldnt be allowed in most of the casinos, but its certainly superb as an adult holiday.

I went but I was under 21 so couldn't go to a casino or anything. I had a great time anyway, looking at the hotels and stuff. Being there seems a bit like being in an adult playground, with new stuff around every corner.

I don't think you have to do it but it's quite fun for a while.

Its not going to appeal to everyone but neither do whale watching cruises, visiting ancient ruins, lying by the pool or camping.
There is loads to do in Vegas in addition to the casinos and probably lots of people just want to see it as it isn't like anywhere else.

I went a couple of years ago as part of a trip. The idea had never really appealed and I assumed I would be really underwhelmed by it but I actually really enjoyed my time there, I was really surprised. I didn't even gamble but there was lots of other stuff to do and a couple of nights was more than enough.

I would love to go! Possibly because I have a gamblers streak in me and could quite happily sit and feed coins into a fruit machine for hours :)

I don't get gambling, so that is not for me, but tbh I love the idea of the glitz and tackiness!

June 2000 - my wedding. Pyramid room booked in the Luxor Hotel, Little White Chapel booked for wedding. A little red Corvette hired to cruise around in, a helicopter trip over the Grand Canyon booked, an Elvis impersonator hired to marry us!

Contrast this to England's wedding venues (no you can't have champagne with your meal, no you can't have sausages and mash to eat, no you can't have your own flowers, no you can't supply your own drinks etc etc etc etc)

Sadly my FIL, (who was going to be looking after our 8 month old son for the week), was diagnosed with terminal cancer just a few weeks before the wedding. We cancelled everything and got married in a Registry office in England and had a very small reception in a local French restaurant.

You don't have to "get" Las Vegas, - I would have loved to have had my wedding as planned there, tacky or not!

We dont gamble either, we had a few goes on the cheap slot machines, for a laugh, but that was the extent of our gambling.

The trick is to sit at one of those machines, feeding it very slowly with a few cents, and then get a free drink.... (if you are in a casino playing, all drinks are free, you just ask one of the passing waitresses)...

The Hoover Dam is only twenty minutes away too, and is a really interesting trip out.

We havent been to the Grand Canyon, but most people who visit for the first time have a trip there too.

I didn't gamble when I went but loved it and so did my kids. We asked the kids if they would like to go to Oz( to see cousins) or back to Vegas (if we could afford it) and they chose Vegas!

Only time we have ever seen brits there in any number was when the Hatton fight was on, and we didnt see any bad behaviour at all.

It really isnt anything like Blackpool you know Grin
