To not get Las Vegas?

Someone I know has just gone on honeymoon there; another friend has also gone there with her family for their annual holiday.

As far as I can tell, it's a city full of casinos, a fake Eiffel Tower and a fake Grand Canal.

Sounds hellish.

What am I missing? Confused

Agree with squeaky. Majority of tourists when we went were American. Didn't see many brits and didn't see any drunken behaviour. All the clubs had a very good "Party" atmosphere without any of the binge drinking horror you see in the UK

katkitya · 20/07/2011 19:33

I loved it. I go on all different kinds of holidays I sometimes think people get snooty about Vegas but, it's amazing. I will never forget the helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon. The scenary around Vegas is amazing. The shows are top notch. The slot machines are fun and you don't lose any money because they ply you with free drinks. Any drink you fancy!!! I preferred the old Vegas and next time I think I will stay in the Golden Nugget. You really go back in time down town. Back to the good old mafia days. There's some proper bars in that area, full of local bikers and students. Everyone is so friendly and happy all the time. I can't wait to go back. It was a nice relief after uptight LA. I agree that three nights is enough. I would never take children there.

superjobee · 20/07/2011 19:33

its one of the places i'd like to go, but just couldnt. when something is built up into a 'once in a lifetime' scenario i think there is too much to do in a short amount of time that id just rather not do it. it makes me anxious. like london new york paris prague basically anywhere cultural Blush im nervy at the best of times and would get really down if i realised i'd missed something on the trip that i perhaps wouldnt get the oppurtunity to see again at least not for a long while. also i hate tourists. they make my skin crawl and i hate the idea of being a tourist and it embarrasses me Hmm but im bloody odd tho..

utahforever · 20/07/2011 19:34

Gotta say I love Vegas - and we don't gamble, drink or see the shows !

We generally fly into Las Vegas, stay 2 days max to see the new hotels that have been built since we last went and to stand in front of the Bellagio fountains for a couple of hours few minutes Grin

It is what it is - an artificial town in very beautiful area.

We use it as a jumping off point to travel around the National Parks of Arizona, Utah and California.

Can't wait until we go back !!!!!!!!!

katkitya · 20/07/2011 19:35

And, there really is no drunken fights or puking in the street. The Americans seem to know how to have a good time without getting trollied!

squeakytoy · 20/07/2011 19:35

catgirl, I think a lot of that is down to the 21 age limit.. and I find it to be the same in any bars we go to in America, you just dont get the same shrieking rowdiness that you do in bars in the UK that are full of 18-21's.

Two of my favourites in Vegas are Coyote Ugly and the Harley Davidson bars.. Coyote is just like the film, girls up dancing on the bar, brilliant atmosphere.

Never seen ANY trouble in Vegas at all. Plenty of tipsy people having fun, but no puking in the streets, no fighting, and people have a laugh with strangers, all in all a brilliant atmosphere.

AuntiePickleBottom · 20/07/2011 19:35

i would love to go, because it is near hoover dam and the grand Canyon. Also i would love to wait around a capel in hope to be a witness of a wedding.

catgirl1976 · 20/07/2011 19:36

yes age limit probably does help. I thought the atmosphere was great - felt really safe which was nice

hairfullofsnakes · 20/07/2011 19:37

I have been and it was ok, you take it for what it is, take in a cirque de solel show as they are out of this world, visit the bodies exhibition and the fun store and definitely take a helicopter ride into the grand canyon and then back to Vegas as evening sets for the lights

gethelp · 20/07/2011 19:40

You can't judge it until you've been. Vegas is like nothing you've ever seen, and you can have whatever experience you like. And as for tacky? You can have tacky, and you can have the most glamorous amazing full-on luxury your heart could desire, if you can pay for it.

katkitya · 20/07/2011 19:40

One thing we never saw was alot of wedding parties. I thought there would be loads.

TurnipCake · 20/07/2011 19:44

Yep, another person who didn't see any drunken louts, no fighting, no puking etc.

lovecat · 20/07/2011 19:47

My best friend got married in Vegas and I was a witness. I don't gamble but I absolutely loved it there and would go again like a shot if I could afford it.

The Grand Canyon, horse-riding out into the desert, cabanas by the pool with free fluffy towels, all those rides and shows, top DJs in the hotel nightclubs, the Liberace Museum!!!! I thought it was FABULOUS. We didn't see any drunks or trouble while we were there, and one of my abiding memories is walking back to the Luxor along the strip after the wedding dinner at the Stratosphere, the stars just beginning to come out, my friend in her wedding dress with a glass of champagne, pausing outside the Bellagio for photos and every second person coming up and congratulating her and her DH... it was gorgeous.

Toobluntforboss · 20/07/2011 19:48

I never wanted to go as thought it sounded horrendous, but did go to please my DH as he had wanted to go for ages and it was amazing! Beautiful hotels, fab restaurants and bars, Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam trips and gorgeous weather! I didn't see anything cheap and tacky (I'm sure it's there but we didn't go near anything like that) and I can honestly say I had a ball! This was all before DCs though, so wouldn't plan it for a family holiday but would definitely recommend it without children!

ScarletOHaHa · 20/07/2011 19:50

Had the typical Las Vegas wedding described by diabolo

I LOVE Las Vegas -it was indeed fabulous. Didn't gamble but did go to some great shows and for some delicious meals. We stayed 11 nights with our friends and it was the perfect holiday for adults. We went to pool areas/ hired cabanas/ went to spas all day and went out each night.

Brandon Flowers is a mormon. He was probably never going to "get" vegas given that.

lovecat, we have stayed at the Luxor, did you find the lifts were just weird because they were going diagonally Grin

Thats another thing about Vegas, you pay cheap prices for five star quality... for £30 a night you have a room with two superking beds, a luxury bathroom, air con, mini-bar, free wifi, and cleaned to within an inch of its life..

Eating out is amazing, the casinos have themed buffet restaurants and they are all "eat as much as you can want", and for an average of £15 you can have lobster, steak, and every other kind of meat, fruit and vegetable in between....

katkitya · 20/07/2011 19:58

I saw him in a programme about Vegas and he seemed to love it!

Lilymaid · 20/07/2011 19:58

DH went there (for an engineering conference) and loathed it. He thinks that its premise is falsehood and unreality. The place shouldn't exist - its in a desert. There are fakes all around you ... Venice, Pyramids, etc. These are all fronts into the rather uninteresting public gaming rooms (the private rooms might be more interesting, but the public rooms are full of ordinary people losing their money at games of chance). The entertainment, apart from gambling, is largely of magic and make believe.
On the other hand DS2, a callow youth, thought it was great when he visited last year and can't wait to be 21 ... worried mother emoticon

squeakytoy · 20/07/2011 19:59

Grin It hasnt stopped Brandon performing in Vegas though... plenty of times..

catgirl1976 · 20/07/2011 20:00

I didn't say it was ignorance. But it is a city dedicated to excess, gambling, clubbing, shopping etc etc. Not likely to be right up his street given his religious views. He may actually just dislike the weather or the parking laws for all I know but I think it is reasonable to assume practising mormons will probably not be the biggest vegas fans.

squeakytoy · 20/07/2011 20:01

lily, I would honestly say your husband is just telling you that because he was there and you werent Wink ..

Conferences are very very popular in Vegas, and I didnt see many miserable "attendees" once their meetings were over.... Grin
