AIBU?

To not get Las Vegas?

Someone I know has just gone on honeymoon there; another friend has also gone there with her family for their annual holiday.

As far as I can tell, it's a city full of casinos, a fake Eiffel Tower and a fake Grand Canal.

Sounds hellish.

What am I missing? Confused

Oh and we spent two weeks there and didn't gamble.

I have been to Blackpool (family obligation). I imagine that Las Vegas is bigger, better and Glitzier sans vomit.
I imagine it as an adult Disney. (Hell)
So I wont ever go. I have seen documentries; I've seen weddings. It is (I know) my idea of hell.

Hmm, this thread is changing my mind on it. I have always thought it was just a bigger Blackpool, but DP is always trying to convince me to go. A big party, great weather, and a helicopter over the Grand Canyon sound like just the ticket right now really...I may have to relent Grin

I have been and didn't get it either.

We had just driven down highway 1 from San Francisco through Big Sur. I couldn't believe we left all that rugged beauty for a dump like Vegas.

I know people talk about glitz and glamour but to be honest it passed me by. I can't see what on earth is glamorous about paying $90 to float down a swimming pool in a gondola in the middle of what is effectively no different to the Trafford Centre.

We stayed in the MGM which was a nice enough hotel but hotel rooms and shopping centres aren't really my thing. The casinos just reminded me of the kind of fake tacky that shopping centres tend to be adorned with.

I preferred Fremont Street the best, but that is of a poor lot. Was so relieved to head back to California and Santa Cruz!

Feedthegoat - oooh I loved San Fransisco too.

We stayed about a mile off the strip on the outskirts in a resort, we had an apartment. A little shuttle bus would run from mid-day to midnight every 10 mins or so up to the Tropicana and back.

Take it for what it is - disneyland for adults! One of my favourite places along with rome and rio de janeiro.
Shopping on a par with New York.
Most michelin star restaurants in one small place - which are reasonably priced compared to London or Paris!
Always something new to see every time you go.
Very safe.
Some of the best shows in the world.

It's about so much more than gambling - although I do play poker!!!

You have to experience it and then make your mind up!

Fountains are mechanically engineered water spurting up. I've seen them at Versailles. It's not impressive; it's a lot of water coming out of a pump.
I much prefer nature doing the same thing but better. Geysers, spouts, springs. Give me Iceland any day.

The Bellagio is stunning. Real Picassos casually hang on the walls!! The food in there is very expensive for what it is, I have to say.

No it is not a holiday destination to spend 2 weeks at. But we got married there in 2003 and spent 4 days there afterwards before flying to Hawaii for our honeymoon and I have to say we had a blast and plan on going back for our 10th anniversary. We aren't gamblers either but there is soooo much to do there and see and everything is madly larger than life - great fun much better than it sounds :)
