From previouw threads, ive emmigrated following my husband so question dear MNers how do you make friends with people without knowing the language and not having a cooker to at least offer a homebaked ice breaker plase be nice!!! xx

Right! I have been with my DH abroad for a few years now and found friends hard. My advice is:

  1. Join things. Doesn't really matter what as long as you like it.
  1. Get a job. Voluntary or paid.
  1. Have a baby! Baby groups work.
  1. Find out what people do culturally (do they bake, or what?).
  1. Use your foreignness. Give English conversation opportunities to people. Join a charity for newcomers.

What country is your new home? I missed the last thread.

DomesticDiva - where in heaven's name have you gone?? No electricity, not knowing the language and drinking strange stuff called waragi (or something) - where are you?

Ok, gotcha - you're in Rwanda. Bit tricky to advise then, not really somewhere I know anything about! although I stand by my advice to get a generator if you can (if you have access to the petrol for it!)
