to be sick of hearing my family sigh and say 'Oh Gawd, not that rubbish'

every time I happen to mention that I discovered something or saw something interesting on MN.
I don't mention it often for that very reason, so it's not like I say it much.

Every single time I mention MN, I can almost imagine them rolling their eyes over the phone, and I get the big sigh and the 'Not that crap again' before I've even mentioned what I have discovered.

I eventually snapped at my DSis today and asked her if she'd ever looked at MN, and if she hasn't, perhaps she should before dismissing it all as rubbish.

I feel like I have to bloody lie about where I saw something, or how I got the idea etc.

I have had a huge amount of help from here, and have read tips and learnt so much, but if I mention it and my family say 'Oooh that's interesting, where did you hear that?' I can't say MN without the eye rolling/sighing. What can I say instead?

Am I the only one who gets this reaction?

DP was a bit dismissive of MN at first, until I directed him towards Classics and we both sat there howling with laughter into the wee small hours.

MIL loves my MN anecdotes of wisdom.

No one really dismisses it, but I don't tell that many people I'm on here as I love the anonymity of it. :)

I don't think I've ever felt the need to mention MN to anyone, other than the one person I discovered I knew in RL, ages ago.
I guess if you want to talk about ishoos or parenting ideas, use MN as the inspiration to do your own research online and then you can quote that. So if you've become interested in BLW since reading about it on MN, go off and find some other sources. ANd tell your family they are being rude and dismissive of your interests and to feck off

No one has actually rolled their eyes at me when I have mentioned it, but I do get the impression that they think I am a total saddo so I dont mention it too much either!

Each to their own, but I find it at times invaluable/hilarious/comforting and sometimes it just kills time!

BoF is right. Though my (RL) friends have started asking when they can meet my wonderful, well-informed, funny 'mates' who so often 'said something interesting last night'.

I just say that I randomly read online, though I told a rl friend today, that I had just met an online friend, and she thought it was great, but then she's met people online too.

Some folk just don't get online, as they don't use the net for socialising.

If you are ashamed/embarassed to mention online communication to people in the same way you would any other type, I wonder what you are doing here at all, tbh.

DH slates MN. He sticks to TenTenths where they talk about cars and racing like real men do

He likes to be asked the diy/plumbing queries that sometimes crop up here, it makes him feel important.

Two of my friends are totally dismissive. One actually says MN is for those who are 'needy' and that I use it because I don't have a social life.

My Mum is not online, but from time to time I'll print off a thread for her if it's particularly funny, a MN classic, or 'things kids say' or remember the 70's etc.
When she was in hospital she loved reading them. They really cheered her up. I do have to write all the acronyms at the top of the page for her , although she has learnt most of them now!! I used to get phone calls 'What's a DH, DS2? '

A lot of people / my friends dont understand the need for social networking with strangers, if it wasnt for the fact that I spend hours and hours alone at home, I guess i wouldnt be on the internet as much as I am! I certainly dont advertsie the fact, purely becasue I would get the same response as sunshineandblueskies.

I think my friends think I'm a total sadact for being on here as we are all in our early twenties with no children. But I still love it :o

Yep, my family are the same. Every time I come out with a fact, both my DH and DS say, "Mum's been on Bumsnet again" whilst falling about at their own wit.

We have been booking a camping trip in France. DH wasn't keen on the sight I picked but once a couple of MNers had said it looked nice he was all for it!!!

I do believe he thinks you are all a bunch of messiahs!!!!

When I mention mn, I see my families eyes glaze over [hhmm] [hgrin]

I don't say "MN" to anyone other than DP and other MNers.

Most RL people would probably look at me as if I was from Mars.
