For wishing Mum's Net would decode the abbreviations?

I wish Mum's net would give us a decoder for the abbreviations used on this site.

As a newbie I had to ask what DS, DH etc. met so I've got those now but there are loads I just can't work out so please Mum's net, can you let us know what the abbreviations that are commonly used mean?

Or could Mum's Net Posters use this thread to tell us which ones they know and what they stand for?

Cheers.

I am trying to work fin de siècle into this somehow.

SuePurblybilt · 16/07/2011 18:52

Think you just did Grin

Nobody likes a show-off. Stoppit and Tidy Up (some of Mr Wogan's best work, that)

no reason why it shouldn't, yearning! :)

Mitmoo - no one who is commenting on your name is suggesting you are a troll, merely that when a new poster has a name very similar to an established poster, it is considered courteous to consider changing it to something less similar to avoid confusion. This has obviously passed you by.

cabalamat · 17/07/2011 06:32

Maybe Mumsnet could do it so that when you put your mouse over an acronym, it pops up a tooltip saying what it means.

Mitmoo · 18/07/2011 15:57

Thumbsnose I think you missed these posts:

I was just about to say that Disaster.

I think someone is making a point

cabalamat What a great idea, best post of the thread award goes to you.

Anyway it should be "Abbreviations" not "Acronyms"

Jux · 18/07/2011 20:08

Should it? An acronym is an abbreviation made of the initial letters of the words of the phrase being abbreviated, isn't it?

Disasterpiece · 18/07/2011 23:26

OP read what you just quoted. I didnt call you a troll. Just said I dont think you are new.

ThumbsNoseAtSnapewitch · 18/07/2011 23:39

no mitmoo - you need to read what I said more carefully - I said no one who is commenting on your name is calling you a troll.

Pakdooik, not an abbreviation, no. Acronym is more right than abbrreviation but apparently what we should really call them is "initialisms". From Wiki:
Although the term acronym is widely used to describe any abbreviation formed from initial letters,[3] most dictionaries define acronym to mean "a word" in its original sense,[4][5][6] while some include a secondary indication of usage, attributing to acronym the same meaning as that of initialism.[7][8][9] According to the primary definition found in most dictionaries, examples of acronyms are NATO (pronounced /ˈneɪtoʊ/), scuba (/ˈskuːbə/), and radar (/ˈreɪdɑr/), while examples of initialisms are FBI (/ˌɛfˌbiːˈaɪ/) and HTML (/ˌeɪtʃˌtiːˌɛmˈɛl/).[4][8][10]

Jux · 19/07/2011 00:43

Mitmoo, I was merely commenting on the likeness of your name to an existing poster. I had no troll radar out.

Initialisms is such an ugly word, lacking grace or elegance.

ThumbsNoseAtSnapewitch · 19/07/2011 01:02

it is, isn't it, Jux? Plus it almost sounds like you have something against initials, oddly!

Mitmoo · 19/07/2011 10:05

Thumbs are you always so patronising or are you making a special effort just for me? I can read just fine thanks, heavens forbid you weren't clear when you wrote it.

I never quite get these threads.

It's not like Mumsnet is some sort of rigidly enforced government scheme where you risk jail if you fail to participate.

If you like it, join up and post. If you don't like it, don't join up and don't post.

I don't really understand the whole "I don't really like this, this and this about Mumsnet and actually everyone is very cliquey and mean but I will soldier on against the odds and keep posting [sigh]" thing.

TandB · 19/07/2011 10:31

And for Chaos...

Sing It Off Beat?

TandB · 19/07/2011 10:32

Or possibly Suck It Op Beeatches.

I know the O should be a U but Chaos never minds a bit of comedy juxtaposition.....

smartyparts · 19/07/2011 10:35

Haven't read whole thread but has anyone pointed out, none of these are acronyms, they are abbreviations.

As you were.

smartyparts · 19/07/2011 10:36

OK, have just seen that they have!

ThumbsNoseAtSnapewitch · 19/07/2011 11:30

It's what I wrote. It was quite clear - you didn't read it accurately.

Pakdooik · 21/07/2011 14:47

Smartypants Yeah!
