Local paper has story about 36 Chinese students attending a summer school in the area.

Headline?

'CHINESE INVADE XXXBOROUGH'

Hmm Angry

Wow. Its more lazy than racist but thats only becuase it is is REALLY lazy.

IvyAndGold · 15/07/2011 19:11
Confused
worraliberty · 15/07/2011 19:12

Sounds light hearted to me, what's your problem with it? Smile

TidyDancer · 15/07/2011 19:12

I can see why you think that, but I don't think it's as bad as you are implying. It was lazy possibly, but certainly not malicious.

WiiDram · 15/07/2011 19:15

Oh come on.

'Invade' when applied to people from another country is almost ALWAYS used as a negative.

How about 'XXXBOROUGH WELCOMES CHINESE STUDENTS' instead ?? Took me all of, ooh, 30 seconds to think of, so hardly cutting edge stuff.

"Shonky", what does that mean? I love the sound of it. Is it a form of skanky?

JamieAgain · 15/07/2011 19:44

Yes it is racist/xenophobic. Why "invade"?

Shonky means generally rubbish

WiiDram · 15/07/2011 19:48

shonky = somewhere between shit and wonky Grin, usually used to apply to my attempts at diy

and it is BLATANTLY inflaming xenophobia

JamieAgain · 15/07/2011 19:53

It's a "subtle" way of saying - "look at them all lined up. Aren't like us, are they? Must be up to something"

giveitago · 15/07/2011 20:07

With you wii -but it's a european thing - EU countries very worried about china. UK less than others but it's still a shitty headline.

TidyDancer · 15/07/2011 20:21

It isn't blatantly doing anything. It's a silly headline, admittedly, but to suggest it's out and out racist is taking it too far.

Indaba · 15/07/2011 21:47

YANBU...invade suggests something negative. I'd write to the paper and if you put their link on, I'll do the same.

StealthPolarBear · 15/07/2011 21:49

Yes I agree. " invades..." is never a positive line.
Out of curiosity, why is 36 chinese students in a school news?

WiiDram · 15/07/2011 22:13

Looks like someone else has raised it with them already - on their website, the headline has been changed to 'International students are first for XXXborough'.

Yanbu

NotADudeExactly · 16/07/2011 01:50

I used to work for a local paper in my late teens. They would have loved this as a headline.

Don't think they necessarily realize that this is racist (although it is). IME the kind of editor who has never made it any further than a small town paper will actually think that this is creative and hilarious. Hence their high flying career.

catgirl1976 · 16/07/2011 08:15

Where I live, the bookshop's cat died and that was the front page of our local paper............. He was a nice cat though

NormanTebbit · 16/07/2011 08:23

It's a rubbish headline.

WiiDram · 16/07/2011 08:56

They will make news out of anything - we've also had the notable headline 'Donkey visits old peoples' home'...
