to think Rachel should have gone to Paris?

I watched (for the hundredth time) the last episode of Friends last night, and once again thought how unfair it was that Rachel gave up on her dream job in Paris to stay with needy Ross.

I would be interested to hear what feminists make of it but I'm too scared to post on there.

What do you think, was she right to stay or should she have gone to Paris?

And just for the record, I found the whole Monica and Chandler adoption storyline deeply distasteful and ridiculous. In fact the last two series were pretty weak.

What series was it where they found the video about Rachel seducing Ross? That was an absolute classic.

And I should have played Estelle (my favourite character)

The Ross theory was backed up last night by the episode on E4. It's the one where Rachel needs somewhere to live and Ross has been convinced by Phoebe that he's in love with Rachel again so he basically spends the whole episode trying to make sure the he either does live with her (so they can get together) or that he doesn't live with her (because she says she's not in the same place and he worries that she'll sleep with someone else). Totally, totally manipulative and just playing with Rachel's life when he feels like it.

My eyes have been opened!

I think she should of went. They should stop repeating it, it's been done to the death!.

Aworryingtrend · 13/07/2011 11:11

Yes i thought that too last night Shellshocked1- an exellent illustration of what had been discussed here. Obviously that was the only reason I was watching it, for educational purposes...

Once your eyes are opened to it, its easy to see that Ross treats Rachel as his 'property' rather than actually caring about her wellbeing.

Ooh, and the smoking pot bit... 'Who can I say tricked me into it?' Again, somebody else's fault..!

Tollund · 13/07/2011 20:03

Hmmmmm....maybe Paris wouldn't have worked out anyway. Remember what happened when Carrie left NY for Paris and it was all loneliness and dog shit?

TillyIpswitch · 14/07/2011 02:10

Yes, but Carrie went to Paris for a man; Rachel was doing it for a job/independence... Wink

differentnameforthis · 14/07/2011 06:55

Has any one pointed out that it was A TV SHOW yet?

Aworryingtrend · 14/07/2011 09:28

Yes Different, they did, a few pages back, and we ignored them as well...

Ross & Rachel were terrible as a couple she should have gone, I always get really annoyed when I see this episode Blush

thefurryone · 14/07/2011 11:45

Wow just read whole thread always knew Ross was a twunt now I know why!

I always blamed his obsessive behaviour when they first got together as a reaction to how his first marriage ended but he is actually just a nasty controlling misogynist. I can imagine Rachel's AIBU "my boyfriend keeps coming to my office because he thinks I'm sleeping with my colleague ...." the MN jury would hopefully have opened her eyes.

It bothered me a lot at that time that both Friends and Sex and the City ended up by saying that women shouldn't bother striking out into a new life, but stay cosily in a familiar place with the Man of their Life (even though they'd previously broken up with that man for sound reasons). Know thy place, woman.

I've previously moved country, and it's scary and uncomfortable for the first six months, and you have to power on through because it's worth it in the end.

That said, I now have a child, and I live in the same city as the father, though not together (thank God). And I've realized that I can't up sticks and move to a different country, at least till DD is pretty much grown up. So I'm revising my view somewhat.
