My point was if boys haven't got good strong male guidance they can end up in gangs - a 12 year old will look up to a 16 year gang member - he becomes the 'father figure' - I'd far rather these boys were being taken football or boxing than left in the mercy of gang culture - only to end up shot dead at 15.

ditttany, look, let's try this.

You know how you feel it was good to have support because you have got a "massive slagging off" on this thread?

Well that's how you make a lot of people feel. That's what they are saying and you should listen to it. Really. And whether you like it or not, I say that in the interests of love and human harmony.

MillyR · 05/07/2011 11:15

This is a useful and short video for looking at the difference between saying something racist and being racist. The same reasoning could be cused for misogyny.

Hully I'm not trying to 'see people off.' I'm genuinely looking at how some of the important issues of egalitarianism can be looked at on MN, and how the feminism section could be of more use to people. But there's no point pretending that the tone on the feminist section is being set by regular posters alone, when we are constantly being attacked by trolls who have an issue with MN in general and see the feminist section as a good place to attack it.

Omigawd · 05/07/2011 11:15

"i have faith in people's rationality and ability to see what's going on without having to be here to point it out.

everyone can recognise nasty vitriol when they see it, we're well practised on mn."

Yup - 1200 posts is a testament to most people's rationality.

And as to practicing vitriol, that's the MN Feminista's stock in trade methinks.

Which is why there are 1200 or so posts over here.....

Oh yes, granted. But I'd rather they weren't forced into any overtly 'manly' activity. It's so easy to channel boys into the sort of men that society expects rather than the sort of men they might be given wider horizons and more open expectations.

Saf, I have said about eighty thousand times that I am talking about a couple of posters, not the fem boards. Why get so worked up? I really don't understand it.

No, I didn't know it referred to epileptics. I do have several friends who suffer from epilepsy (the term they prefer rather than being defined by their illness), but I have never come across it.

Hullygully · 05/07/2011 11:17

And if you think accusing someone of brownnosing for supporting someone who is being picked on is funny, you've got a shit sense of humour.

See? That was funny.

Hullygully · 05/07/2011 11:17

And I don't agree about the picked on, I really don't.

no you are

My, It's fun, AND so productive!

MarySueFTW · 05/07/2011 11:23

Clearly Ormirian, nobody was saying gangs equal 'good strong guidance.'

"the most horrible things have been said about feminists on here and the women who post regularly on the feminist section, really insulting, nasty things."

No they haven't. What a joke about witches with the crossed out thing that shows it's playful? Or what, examples to back up this repetitive claim I keep hearing please. I'll give you something to cry about, one of the most off-putting things about many feminists is their sense of humour bypass and their eternal victimhood. Adults can take some constructive criticism and even a joke without running off whining about witch-hunts and how 'nasty' everyone is.

'Whining! Thats misogyny woman-hating silencing technique 101!!!'

Nastiness is something to complain about I suppose, but it's very rich when it comes from someone who dishes it out willy-nilly.

Hullygully · 05/07/2011 11:24

I don't accept any of it either.

I don't accept it more than Dittany doesn't.
