My neighbour has asked me to pick up my cat's poo from their garden. Literally she wants to be able to call on me to come and pick it up on an as and when basis.

I have 2 cats. They have only just started going outside, about 1 month so far. I still have a litter tray at home and they do use it but they are also beginning to 'go' outside too.

My view is that cats should not be locked in doors. I had to keep them indoors for the first 6th months because I was told by the shelter that they needed their injections, be neutered and micro chipped before they could venture outside and all that wasn't done till they were 6 months old.

I keep my cats up to date with their injections and worm/flee ointment - well they are only 7 months old at the moment, but I fully intend to keep them up to date.

There are other cats in the area. The house behind mine has 2 big cats and we are in a rural area with foxes. Also, my neighbours have a dog. Nice dog, sometimes it barks but it isn't really a problem if I'm honest. I like dogs as much as cats, I'm not anti dogs or anything.

Am I legally obliged to pick up my cats poo?

I've spoken to my mother and she has told me that I should pick up my cat's poo if the neighbour asks. The thing is, I may have to go round there each day or two to do it.

CantAffordtoLive · 11/05/2016 21:34

I can't believe the amount of angst about a bit of cat poo! Do you all think you are Hyacinth Bucket or something?

Get over yourselves.

If that is the worst you have to worry about then just count your sodding blessings.

porridge90 · 11/05/2016 21:39

I have 2 cats but all of the neighbourhood cats (there are about 12!) seem to use our front garden as a litter tray. It is bark not grass so it isn't the end of the world, but I wouldn't dream of asking each individual owner to come and pick it up!

MiddleAgeMiddleEngland · 11/05/2016 21:40

Just make it part of your daily routine. Your cats, your responsibility. If you don't want the responsibility, get your cats re-housed or keep them inside.

YABVVU

This: sprinfbockscantjump "I'm pretty astounded that you openly state that you didn't get a dog because you didn't want to clear up shit, but you are perfectly happy to make someone else clear up your pet's shit."

You own the cat, you own the poo. Clean it up!

Other neighbour to neighrbour spats/drama completely irrelevant.

Amazed you are even contemplating not.

AaoograhaHoa · 11/05/2016 21:58

Hahaha. Just caught up re: zombie thread...

As it's a dead thread, just had a giggle by re-reading and replacing "cat/cats" with DS... hee hee hee

Esspee · 11/05/2016 21:59

I admire your neighbour. Why should she have to clean up after your pets?

BoopTheSnoot · 11/05/2016 22:01

Have to say, I agree with your neighbour in the grand scheme of things. Cat poo stinks, and once they find somewhere that they like to go it's a nightmare to stop them from going there.
It's definitely the less glamorous side of having a pet, but I'm sure you'd pick it up if they we're doing it in your own garden.

Tubbyinthehottub · 11/05/2016 22:01

Feed them a high protein or raw diet then they will only do little non smelly rabbit pellet poos. And have a word with the cats so they know not use her garden.

I can't believe so many people have gardens full of cat poo. I've only ever seen one in my garden in my whole life and I've always lived in suburban areas surrounded by cats. Dog shit on the other hand is everywhere, particularly on the route we take on foot to school. And I live in a naice area.

MiddleAgeMiddleEngland · 11/05/2016 22:06

Tubby I picked up 17 lots of cat poo a couple of weekends ago. That was because I was busy in the week and hadn't been out there for a few days. I indeed have a "garden full of cat poo."

The Zombie warning disappears when enough posts are recent. So here I am, adding to problem Halo

Flibjibbet · 11/05/2016 22:18

It would be greatly appreciated as it's your choice to have pets, so your responsibility. We have 3 local cats that wander round here. One is an over friendly little shit of a cat who can sense the hate I have for him ginger cat, the other two barely ever come into ours and when they do its just to get to the next garden. Ginger prick comes in every morning imaginary newspaper under arm and takes a massive steaming shit... Not on the lawn but ontop of the gravel inbetween the paving slabs. I mentioned once in talking to the owner who said 'Oh God yeah he does that to mine... Nightmare to clean up and absolutely stinks' then recommended the super duper pooper scooper she bought from Amazon 'a little pricey but worth the money'. Err well no actually I dont need one as I don't have pets, clean up your own cat shit rank woman! Angry

SeasonalVag · 11/05/2016 22:45

I'm really confused. Or maybe every cat I've had has been super middle class, but they've always buried their turds in soil....all right of them.....don't other cats do this? That's so brazen, shitting on gravel etc. Might as well get a mutt.

MrsMook · 11/05/2016 22:47

Like a cat, this zombie thread seems to have about 9 lives!

Super middle class cats Grin

Must show this thread to DH: he is often swearing about the mess in our garden from our neighbour's cats. Not great when DC are in and out of garden.

Civilservant · 11/05/2016 22:50

DH was once mowing the lawn, which had got quite long, and ran over a massive load of the cat poo, it wasn't pretty and he was ranting for a good while!

HooseRice · 11/05/2016 22:54

Someone I know of took his neighbour's cat to a town 50 miles away and left it there after repeat requests for neighbours to pick up poo. Not a nice man.

Well you can't have it both ways! If the cat owners in question are conveniently seeing cats as "roaming wildlife" when it comes to their shit then fair enough. Either it's your pet and responsibility, or it's not. Make up your mind

HazelBite · 12/05/2016 11:32

I know this is a Zombie thread, but I wondered why the OP's neighbour, who disliked the cats coming in her garden didn't just put her dog out in the garden when the cats were around?
