My neighbour has asked me to pick up my cat's poo from their garden. Literally she wants to be able to call on me to come and pick it up on an as and when basis.

I have 2 cats. They have only just started going outside, about 1 month so far. I still have a litter tray at home and they do use it but they are also beginning to 'go' outside too.

My view is that cats should not be locked in doors. I had to keep them indoors for the first 6th months because I was told by the shelter that they needed their injections, be neutered and micro chipped before they could venture outside and all that wasn't done till they were 6 months old.

I keep my cats up to date with their injections and worm/flee ointment - well they are only 7 months old at the moment, but I fully intend to keep them up to date.

There are other cats in the area. The house behind mine has 2 big cats and we are in a rural area with foxes. Also, my neighbours have a dog. Nice dog, sometimes it barks but it isn't really a problem if I'm honest. I like dogs as much as cats, I'm not anti dogs or anything.

Am I legally obliged to pick up my cats poo?

I've spoken to my mother and she has told me that I should pick up my cat's poo if the neighbour asks. The thing is, I may have to go round there each day or two to do it.

MrsGuy I can't believe you said "if you want pets keep them indoors!"

Mad I tell you!l

eatsleephockeyrepeat · 11/05/2016 20:04

Didn't expect to be so in the minority but I think that's barking! What world does she live in; one where outdoor spaces don't get defecated on by passing animals? Who will pick up the fox poo? Who cleans the bird shit off her car??

I appreciate these cats are owned and I'm sure some will use that to find fault with my position, but what kind of sanitised version of a garden is she expecting? Gardens get shat in by unwanted but mostly unavoidable visitors. Want a clean garden, clean it. Get over it.

Is it really such a big problem if people post on a zombie thread? The issue's still relevant to some people who clearly have stumbled across this thread.

And not everyone remembers these threads first time round. So I never quite get why it's such a big deal.

eatsleephockeyrepeat · 11/05/2016 20:05

Goddammit can't believe I posted on a zombie thread!

Thankfully the neighbours opposite moved and taken their 3 cats with them, I rarely get poo in my garden, there are at least another 3 who are regular visitors but they can no longer destroy my garden as I have forked out £60 worth of slate chippings and covered every available flower bed surface. Now they can no longer dig into my flower beds and covering my veg pots with wire netting means they can't crap in my veg.

I had one cat who I saw leave my neighbours window (the house opposite me that backs on my garden) jump onto my shed into the garden and went to its favourite spot on the lawn to crap. So livid its flipping disgusting and harder to get it off the grass. It wouldn't bury it either so the smell was more evident.

I find our attitude of buying a cat because its less responsibility in clearing up its crap very disgusting, Whilst you don't want the responsibility your poor neighbour is finding it now has to do it. Too right she asks you to come clear it up - if you don't want to then at least pay to cat proof her garden for her. I wish I had the guts to confront my neighbour and get them to fork out £60.

MrsGuyOfGisbo · 11/05/2016 20:09

No, mad, or rather, antisocial is to keep a pet and expect others to deal with them.
Either keep it indoors, or deal with it.
You can't claim at the same time that 'it is a wild animal can roam freely', and at the same time feed it, give it vaccinations, bedding etc.
Keep it in your own house/garden - don't foist it on others.
I could never harm an animal, but can see why cat 'murderers' Hmm are driven to it by the unreasonable owners.

ScreenshottingIsNotJournalism · 11/05/2016 20:13

You chose to have three outdoor cats in a presumably residential (i.e. not rural) area and you wonder why your neighbour is pissed that they are the ones having to clean up after your (ill thought out) choice of pet??

AND THEN…. you go on to say that you consciously chose not to have dogs for the extra hassle of having to walk (and scoop your own pets poop) it etc.. yet you expect your neighbour to pick up after your pet when it's not something you can be bothered to do yourself when considering which pet to get

ProudAS · 11/05/2016 20:17

I can't blame her for asking (the sight of poo makes me retch).

Pretty sure that it's her responsibility legally but it might be a nice gesture to buy her a tub of pepper dust.

dowhatnow · 11/05/2016 20:18

place marking for poogate

dowhatnow · 11/05/2016 20:18

oops just seen it's a zombie one - dur

sukie9 · 11/05/2016 20:20

I thought cats buried their poo.....

Littlefish · 11/05/2016 20:20

THIS THREAD IS 5 YEARS OLD!

WaitrosePigeon · 11/05/2016 20:23

Someone bumped this fucking thread so they could post Hmm

You stupid fucking arsehole!!!!

CornishGinger · 11/05/2016 20:28

I find cat poo in my front garden every day. Quite frankly it pisses me off! I had two kids who like to play in the garden and I'm constantly searching for cat poo. Also have a dog who likes to eat it 😤 I can't be sure who's cat it is though and I'm not really sure how you're neighbour can be sure either unless she sits watching all day?!

MummyBtothree · 11/05/2016 20:32

I admire her gumption on this but have to agree. We are the only house without a cat in the vicinity of our street but pick up more cat poo than we have to pick up dog poo after our dog goes!, I never see any of them having to pick up after their cats cos they do it in our bloody garden!. I ought to go and have a steaming great poo on their front lawns.

hmcAsWas · 11/05/2016 20:34

I'd be using a spade and launching it back over your fence

TooOldForGlitter · 11/05/2016 20:37

Only twigged how old this was when I saw scottishmummy on page 3 😃

YorkieDorkie · 11/05/2016 20:45

I think my blood would be boiling at cat shit being all over my garden. You'd be getting it delivered back I'm afraid! Thankfully our current neighbours cats don't come into the garden at all that I've noticed. Halo

YorkieDorkie · 11/05/2016 20:47

These fecking zombie threads Angry

SuperFlyHigh · 11/05/2016 20:49

MrsGuy you are totally absolutely fecking bonkers!

You do realise that the police are very concerned about the Croydon Cat Killers because killers like Mary Bell who killed animals then humans started off with animals first. So the local police are concerned it'll be a human next. Also CCK are decaptitating the cats, etc that's hardly normal behaviour is it?!

The law quite clearly states that cats are free to roam and as far as I'm aware cats have no need for licences unlike dogs. I never heard of a domestic cat savaging and killing a human unlike a domestic dog. And I like dogs.

SuperFlyHigh · 11/05/2016 20:53

eatsleep you have the same view as edam and me now gone, I agree suppose a rat or mouse, or hedgehog or fox shat in the garden who clears up their mess?! No one.

And it is very hard to see where a cat poos, I never see mine doing it outside let alone in the neighbours gardens. And I've got better things to do and am at work, rather than watch the neighbours cats shit in my garden.... But I have plants, Earth, a patio and lovely pond. Which is covered, the pond.

wannabehippyandcrazycatlover · 11/05/2016 20:53

Legally I believe they are classed as wild animals and therefore the owner cannot be responsible for their actions whilst out.

BoneyBackJefferson · 11/05/2016 21:07

If a ZOMBIE shits in the woods etc.

shazzarooney999 · 11/05/2016 21:13

Why should everyone else have to pick up your cat shit? cats pee and poo in peoples gardens its not fair, if theres a pregnant woman there is a risk of toxic shock syndrome and is that fair when a person does not own a cat? clean up your cats shit please.
