My neighbour has asked me to pick up my cat's poo from their garden. Literally she wants to be able to call on me to come and pick it up on an as and when basis.

I have 2 cats. They have only just started going outside, about 1 month so far. I still have a litter tray at home and they do use it but they are also beginning to 'go' outside too.

My view is that cats should not be locked in doors. I had to keep them indoors for the first 6th months because I was told by the shelter that they needed their injections, be neutered and micro chipped before they could venture outside and all that wasn't done till they were 6 months old.

I keep my cats up to date with their injections and worm/flee ointment - well they are only 7 months old at the moment, but I fully intend to keep them up to date.

There are other cats in the area. The house behind mine has 2 big cats and we are in a rural area with foxes. Also, my neighbours have a dog. Nice dog, sometimes it barks but it isn't really a problem if I'm honest. I like dogs as much as cats, I'm not anti dogs or anything.

Am I legally obliged to pick up my cats poo?

I've spoken to my mother and she has told me that I should pick up my cat's poo if the neighbour asks. The thing is, I may have to go round there each day or two to do it.

Article 8 wouldn't do the trick and most sensible local authority staff would look at you as if you were barking and tell you anything to make you go away.

The human rights act isn't something to quote inanely whenever you're having s but of a spat with someone FGS.

sassolino · 13/05/2016 11:48

I wish I had a courage to ask our neighbours. Their cats use our garden as their toilet all the time. Destroyed some of very expensive flower bulbs by digging them out of pots and leaving their shit instead, using the sandpit and strawberry patch for their needs etc etc. Plus leaving the dead birds on the lawn, shredded into pieces.

Mouseinahole · 13/05/2016 13:08

Ask her to photograph pooing cats if it is yours pick up, if not not. But unless it is on lawn I wouldn't anyway.

Mouseinahole · 13/05/2016 13:08

Ah Zombie poo thread....

manicmij · 13/05/2016 14:26

I had to erect wobbly trellising on top of my 6' fence to try and stop a cat coming into my garden in leaving his mess. Also he dug up the bedding when he was scratching for a place to defecate. I have had dogs in the past but never allowed fouling on anyone's property. It is a myth that cats have to be out all night. Had two cats and both were never allowed out after teatime. They both stayed within the garden area other than one followed kids about 100 yards when they were going to school but came right back. Then she would wait in same spot about 4 p.m. when they would be coming home. It's called training, taking responsibility, and having consideration for others who may not love your cat, just as everyone will not love your kids.

JESUS WILL PEOPLE STOP BUMPING THESE FUCKING ZOMBIE THREADS

Dozer · 13/05/2016 20:31

This is a zombie topic people clearly want to discuss though Smile

Sparklingbrook · 13/05/2016 20:36

It's hardly a zombie topic there's at least a thread a month. Grin

LordoftheTits · 13/05/2016 21:11

Why is there a zombie thread being bumped almost every day??

EponasWildDaughter · 13/05/2016 21:23

Been fascinating looking at all the old names Grin

Two of them are me! Once in 2011 with a name i'd forgotten i used and again in 2014 with my last one.

Sorry to bump a ZOMBIE.

EponasWildDaughter · 13/05/2016 21:25

In fact, this is probably the only thread i've posted on under all 3 names.

daisychain01 · 14/05/2016 05:59

All good Zombies have to come back from the dead!

Only 180 more posts and this thread will get to 1000 posts so it will die permanently.

You can almost smell the cat poo!!

Emus · 14/05/2016 06:32

We have a cat that comes into our garden during the early hours and leaves us a gift in full sight on the grass. I think it's my neighbours cat because it's left quite close to their fence. He's a flighty cat and we've chased him several times so I think he comes in, Poo's and then scarpers. We never have cats in our garden during the day. I'm insure of the sonic alarms really work as the poo is left in front of it sometimes and the water one goes off at the slightest thing so only really gets deployed in the summer!

It's a real pain and is disgusting but nothing we can do about it. This cat makes no attempt to hide/bury the poo which makes me think it's been delivered quickly! I think I prefer that as we can see it and remove it without the children unearthing it somewhere.

Sounds like you and your neighbour don't get on. I don't think this is going to go away and expect your problems will continue until either of you move.

Emus · 14/05/2016 06:45

At least you have a litter tray! My neighbour couldn't wait for her cat to start going outside so that she could get rid of the "stinky thing".

It pisses me off that a cat is using our garden for its toilet but I've no proof which cat it is. Even if I did, no way would I approach my neighbour and ask her to clean it up! I accept its what cats do, as much as it winds me up.

Emus · 14/05/2016 06:48

Haha, that'll teach me to read the whole thread before posting! Didn't realise it was so old. Would love an update!!

leelu66 · 14/05/2016 06:49

Zombie thread but I think Pingu was fantastic, really stood her ground.

We had a cat poo problem but dealt with by spraying cat deterrent and putting used coffee beans around the garden. No more cat poo.

I love cats and have had a few, but some of the posters on this thread telling OP she should clean the shit even if it may not have been her cat's were batshit crazy.

SausageSmuggler · 14/05/2016 07:13

In theory I agree with the neighbour. I wish I could do this with mine (no pets myself). I have a big garden and unfortunately the local cats seem to love using it as their toilet. I especially hate having to shovel it out of the kids sandpit Angry

Underdog15 · 05/07/2016 00:30

My neighbour's cat doesn't just poop in mine, it digs stuff up. Figure out how to keep your cat away or get a dog that can be trained. I dunno. Anything.

My neighbour's cat makes me hate my neighbour. Your neighbour will hate you too.

VioletBam · 05/07/2016 01:06

I've always had cats and I would pick it up. It's not that much bother...your animals are making a mess. Mine always had trays which I found gross but I know it's better for other people that way.

Just go and get the shit.

amarmai · 05/07/2016 01:36

Mn has regular threads re dog poo shd be picked up Of course you shd pick up the cat poo. It's your cats doing it.

GoblinLittleOwl · 05/07/2016 06:50

I have spent all my life living with cats and gardens, and I am rarely aware of cat's poo, from my cats and those belonging to neighbours, in my garden, although I know they all use it. If I discover it I remove it.
You should not remove anything from your neighbour's garden, she is being ridiculous and supersensitive. Cats generally bury their business, which dogs don't.

Esspee · 05/07/2016 07:28

Super sensitive? Really? If my kids came into your garden, defecated and left would that be OK then?

ClaireVoyante · 05/07/2016 09:18

Cats are not kids though! Obviously!

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 05/07/2016 10:03

ZOMBIE CAT POO THREAD WILL NOT DIE

MumOfTwoMasterOfNone · 05/07/2016 10:18

No obligation, it's dangerous to pregnant women and my neighbour's used to watch me do it when my OH worked away and I was evidently pregnant. Disgusting!
Why own an animal that c#$ps on other people's property? I don't get it. I think it's anti-social. Feel like leaving my dogs steaming poo all over their garden, but that would be illegal Hmm
So yes...it's your animal. You'd have to deal with it in a litter tray if it was kept indoors, so pick it up.
