to be so nervous about going to cinema ALONE!

Unexpectedly alone for my birthday.

Was planning to go to cinema and am thinking of going alone (can you tell it's my first time )

Feeling really nervous? AIBU and a complete wussy (as I suspect)?

YABU I love going to the cinema alone. It felt weird the first time, and it was at DH's suggestion (he's been doing it all his life) but I absolutely enjoyed it, and its become a 'cheaper than a shopping spree' pleasure when I can get away with it. :)

A tiny bit wussy - sorry. I have gone to the cinema lots of time on my own in the past. When you are sitting in a film it is only at the beginning before the film starts that you are aware of being on your own. Once the film starts, it doesn't matter if you are on your own or not.

You won't have to share the popcorn or the maltesers!

I'm actually envious, would love a couple hours down time in a nice air conditioned cinema watching a film solely of my choice.

I see loads of people who are watching a film alone when I go to the cinema, it has never struck me as out of place.

YABU - all power to you for considering it though - I know a lot of people who won't. FWIW I reg go to the cinema alone, for a bit of a break, and to see films DH does not want to see. I don't get why people freak out about it - it isn't like you talk in the cinema is it!? The only potential problem is the struggle to the seat with popcorn, handbag and giant drink :)

I've done loads of things alone. Including hitch hiking to Egypt and back.

But I haven't been to the cinema alone. Isn't that weird?

Get your self lots of lovely snacks to munch on, sit back, relax and enjoy a bit of time to yourself.

If you feel conspicuous because you're alone, time it so that you walk in just before the session starts.

I've been going to the cinema on my own since I was a teenager...I've always preferred it to going with someone. I haven't had the chance really since I've had DCs, but I will say it is one of the things I miss occassionally about my single life.

You are going to go and sit in the dark for 2-3 hours and not talk. It's the perfect solo activity! I wish I could go to the cinema alone today. Although I'd probably just fall asleep.

Knew I could rely on you lot for a kick up the arse. Guess the problem is I worry too much what other people think. Am convinced there will be people staring at the fat billy no mates who's been binned off on her birthday

I am a wuss - fact. Going to see X-Men - comic book flicks are my guilty pleasure!!

I think you'll love it. Going to the flicks alone is one of my favourite things. But I admit it feels more natural in certain types of film/cinema/timeslots. e.g. I'll happily go to an arty cinema/film on my own but would feel a bit weirder going to a multiplex alone. And I wouldn't go on a weekend night, I don't think. But Thursday evening? No problem! You get to choose the film, the snacks, the seat, and no one sitting next to you to try to talk while it's on or, one of my petty pet hates, turn to you IMMEDIATELY the last scene finishes and demand 'What did you think?'

I love it! I get to sit front row AND eat all the popcorn. I've been going alone for years and it's the best.

I wouldn't go on my own but only because I like people's company. No-one would invite me to the cinema anyway as i am the "mate who talks all the way through".

Forgot to say, happy birthday! And nobody will be looking at you. I bet there's other people there alone.

Oh, and from your last post, no-one has even taken a second look at me. People won't think you're weird, they'll think you wanted to see the film, in fact they'll be so busy doing their own thing they won't think anything at all.

I have also eaten in restaurants on my own (when travelling), that did make me feel a bit self conscious so I used to make sure I had a book to read.

seeker - I wouldn't enjoy going for a nice meal, to the pub, to a pub quiz, bowling alley, playing racquet sports on my own. These are all things that I enjoy doing and that you either physically can't do on your own or going by yourself is not as good as going with someone else.

I have eaten on my own in restaurants, but I have never done this in a posher restaurant late evening time.

I often go to concerts on my own as I like different music from my DH. Thoroughly enjoy it. Don't suppose the cinema is any different.

YANBU if it's not something you're used to doing...
I'm a bit jealous, though - I LOVE going to cinema on own...
