Who/what are chavs?

They are very popular anyway as everyone seems to be one and everyone talks about them

The romany gypsy word for boy is chavi. Apparently chav comes from that.

Another romany word used by us is cushty, which means good.

catgirl1976 · 29/06/2011 14:25

We used to use the word "Townies" when I was young

nagynolonger · 29/06/2011 14:25

No chance of getting me on a horse!

Why shouldn't I be pleased to meet anyone?

HedleyLamarr · 29/06/2011 14:50

Stopped using chav ages ago. I prefer scratter.

TotemPole · 29/06/2011 14:51

What's wrong with saying horse riding?Confused

nagynolonger · 29/06/2011 14:54

I'm guessing you should just say riding.........You would say camel riding if you needed to.

TheAtomicBum · 29/06/2011 15:01

After much researching on the subject, it is from the Romany for either "Boy" or just "Young". I remember reading more about it's use being from further back, but I just can't find it.

TheAtomicBum · 29/06/2011 15:03

I guess saying "Horse Riding" would imply that you would consider riding something undignified, like a donkey. Oooh, heaven forbid that people should we could consider riding around on Donkeys like commoners!

TheAtomicBum · 29/06/2011 15:04

Or possibly riding a bike? Is a bike undignified?

I don't really think of 'chavs' but things which look 'chavvy'

catgirl1976 · 29/06/2011 15:12

No - on that one its not the activity - nagnolonger is right - you would just say "riding" rather than "horse riding".

Funny rules...........

TheAtomicBum · 29/06/2011 15:45

OK, how is the word "Comb" supposed to be said? This is common debate where I come from. You have to chose from:

C-oh-m (This is generally thought of as "posh")
C-oo-m (This is generally considered an idiot trying to be posh)
C-or-m (This is genergally considered to be "normal" or "Common")

Then there grass. Is is Gr-ah-ss (common) or is it Gr-ar-ss (posh).

TheAtomicBum · 29/06/2011 15:46

(as in, "i's a c-or-m, innit?" Grin)

Tchootnika · 29/06/2011 15:57

'kay-omb', in chavvish, babe.

pawsnclaws · 29/06/2011 16:46

I thought a chavi (sp?) was a baby - is it just a boy, then?

I once worked with a girl who was vair vair posh and who only had a couple of O levels ..... and one of them was in horse riding.

catgirl1976 · 29/06/2011 17:08

Riding a horse isnt "common" - refering to that activity as "horse riding" not just "riding" is (apparantly)
