"You have to be fucking joking me?"

Bloody cold calling at this time of night, when have all 3DC's in the bath finally calm and playing nicely after fighting and falling out for last bloody 3hours, and having the bloody dog barking for attention for similar amount of time. Aaaaaaaaaargh!

Just wanted to sit on floor next to DC's (with nice glass of wine-have had BAD day in my defence) and enjoy next 30mins?

Hope they were recording that one for training purposes! :o

Unless cold caller has video link to your home, he or she won't know how busy/ stressed you are. I a) ignore the phone or b) say 'sorry' and put phone down. I wouldn't shout at them but it's a pain in the a**e I know.

Hardly the middle of the night is it? So yes, you are being unreasonable and very rude to someone who is simply doing a job they probably hate, and would rather be at home with their family, but have to earn a pittance making cold calls and getting abuse...

ajandjjmum · 28/06/2011 18:53

I'm always very short, and say 'sorry, I'm not interested in talking to you' and put the phone down.

They are doing a job. YABU to have sworn at them.

What time of night would you find acceptable?

Report
activate · 28/06/2011 18:53

my heart does not and never will bleed for a telesales worker

they deserve everything they get - swearing and phone hanging up

and yes I once was one

the guilt trip is pathetic - don't take a job where you irritate the fuck out of 99% of people you call and swindle the other 1% - just don't

Report
TrilllianAstra · 28/06/2011 18:57

Simply hanging up is actually quicker than being rude.

Report
TidyDancer · 28/06/2011 19:00

Yes, sorry, YABU. You were very rude and totally unnecessarily so.

It's downright nasty to just be rude to them because they're telesales workers, they are doing a job and paying the bills like the rest of us. A simple 'I'm sorry, I'm not interested' and hanging up the phone would do.

Not everyone can afford to be so picky about the jobs they do though can they activate? Hmm

I thought you meant 11pm at the "this time of night" comment and you don't have to answer the phone every time it rings...

YABU and rude.

Kalinda · 28/06/2011 19:05

Bit rude, just a firm no thanks/not interested, thanks bye, hang up will suffice. OR if it was me in an evil mood, I'd have just handed the phone to my toddler (who can yak the hind leg off a donkey), sat back with my vino and enjoyed the entertainment.

Yanbu - I had something similar today.

I had a call centre from asia or somewhere that way call me to say I have been approved for a 5k loan, I said I didn't apply for a loan take me off your call list then the call went like this-

Man - give me your bank details and I will have the money in your account within 3 hours

Me- I don't want a loan, take me off your call list

Man- you must take the loan as it is low interest. Give me your bank details now.

Me - hung up

5 minutes later the phone rings, I answer and it is the same man - 'you hang up, give me your bank details', yes I admit I told him to fuck off

Register yourself on the Telephone Preference Service. This makes it illegal for them to call you.

The calls with decrease dramatically.

I used to work as a "Canvasser" for Weathershitseal, if anyone said they were on the TPS there would be a rush to delete their details.

However if you haven't already done this, it is legal for them to call you until 9pm at night. So yes, YABU.

This time of night at 6.30???? FFS. I did that hideous, exploitative type of job for 7 years and you are allowed to call until 9pm.

Just be grateful that you're not the one getting verbally abused all day.

As soon I say we are on the TPS and you shouldn't be calling me they can't get off the phone quick enough Hmm.

Report
wonkylegs · 28/06/2011 19:12

Know exactly where you are coming from! I'm not usually rude but do get angry as we're registered with the TPS and still get loads of this crap
I also get annoyed with telemarketers who repeatedly phone when asked not too (Amex 5 times in 1 night! I did tell them to fuck off on this one as it was the same guy)
Mind you worst offender for bed time calling is my DM arghhh that woman doesn't get that I'm too busy to speak to her for 45mins about SFA (spot the parent who never put her own kids to bed!)

I'm with activate too. YANBU.

It's not late but they caught you at a bad time.

I was really rude to the last cold caller. Was Sky, they had been calling every 3 or so days for a month. Everytime (but the last) I was polite and told them I wasn't interested in getting a sports/movie package and asked them not to call again.
I did finally have enough and told the poor man, I know it's not his fault, that Sky was harrasing me. He put the phone down on me and the calls stopped!

yanbu. cold calling is extrmemly invasive BUt you can sign up for the telephone preference service which elimiantes a lot of it. still yanbu and don't feel guilty.

i worked in a call centre - it wasn't bad pay and was a good laugh most of the time. we just laughed at poeple who were rude - its not like its personal.

i get v cross if they insist on me parroting my sercurity details before they try to sell me something.

i am ignorant of my phone though unless i am expecting a call. i just let it ring if i'm busy/dont fancy answering it - thats what voicemail is for.

Report
Mollymax · 28/06/2011 19:22

That is why we are on the TPS.
As soon as you tell them they are breaking the law, they can not get off the phone quickly enough.
