To think that leggings are not the same as trousers....

And if you are going to wear them please for the love of god wear a top that covers your bum. I've lost count of the amount of women I've seen recently wearing short tops and leggings and it just looks WRONG! Not also counting the fact that most leggings are see through so showing their pants off too!

It really bugs me

YANBU about ones where the material is stretched over the bum and you can see knickers through

However very thick ie good quality leggings on a woman who is slim (ie no knickers shining through) can look lovely

bittersweetvictory · 26/06/2011 13:41

i bet you are saying that cuz you are just too fat for them, lol, jealousy is not nice, now excuse me while i put on my leggings and short top.

catgirl1976 · 26/06/2011 13:41

I think fine at any age if worn as footless tights and bum fully covered

If worn with short top - only baby gazelles may wear

Crossssssshairs · 26/06/2011 13:49

My mums wears leggings, I love her but its not a good look.

Butterbur · 26/06/2011 13:59

I've seen a few on very young, shapely girls, that weren't too thin, and you couldn't see their knickers. They looked fantastic with a short, casual top, in a Robin Hood kind of way.

TrilllianAstra · 26/06/2011 14:18

I think I need some "everyone can see your underwear" business cards to hand out to men with too-low trousers and women with see-through leggings.

hiddenhome · 26/06/2011 14:23

There was a huge woman in Tesco about two weeks ago and she had some black ones on, but you could still see her thong and she also had a short top on Sad She looked awful.

lowra · 26/06/2011 14:24

Agree with Dora, can look good on skinny model types, but I'm a size 10 (well 12 at the moment til I get rid of rest of baby weight) and couldn't get away with it.

PatriciatheStripper · 26/06/2011 14:37

Some trousers are leggings, according to BHS. I have a few pairs of their "flared leggings" and they are definitely trousers.

(They are not flared either! Just not drainpipe narrow.)

sorry forgot to tick link box

I treat them like tights and only wear them under dresses and they are a no no for overweight people as they show everything, so cover up

Soups · 26/06/2011 15:26

YANBU

For most of us they should be worn as tights. There's a couple of mums on the school run who follow the advice they should be worn with something that covers your bum. Problem is, the t-shirt is a couple of sizes too small and just about stretches over their belly and arse. All that jiggling is too much first thing in the morning.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 26/06/2011 15:43

I wear them round the house (with long tops) and long to wear them out but am too fat (22). The irony is that, because of their comfort and stretchiness they are a godsend to women of my size but we can't wear them in public!

AvengingGerbil · 26/06/2011 15:52

Gwen, wear what you like. Fortunately, the fashion police do not exist in this country, it not being Saudi Arabia.

Crossssssshairs · 26/06/2011 16:00

I agree with AvengingGerbil, if you like them wear them.

SpecialFriedRice · 26/06/2011 17:10

I'm a fatty (22/24) but my 2 pairs are limited to underneath maxi skirts and maxi dresses. No one can see them but they prevent thigh rubbing (boke - sorry) and I dont have to worry about the wind flashing my arse or getting in and out the car without flashing my crotch! Also don't have to worry if my skirt/dress goes see through in the sun.

They should all come with a label stating "think of these as tights - cover your arse."

I have quite a chunky neighbour (prob about a 22) who LIVES in thin, cropped leggings with short tops... It was a white pair the other day - Boke

LittleMissFlustered · 26/06/2011 17:19

I have a pair of emergency leggings, they get worn under jeans when it snows as they're ace for tucking into boots. Never to be seen on their own though.

Used to have a friend who wore white leggings on top of black knickers that had the word 'juicy' stamped on them. I jokingly pointed out she'd picked the wrong knickers, and she was offended. Apparently it was intentional Confused

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 26/06/2011 17:19

Leggings should be reserved for the under 18s and the under size 8s. Sadly, they are mostly seen on the grossly overweight.

icooksocks · 26/06/2011 17:22

YANBU I'm a 16 and love my leggings, but only with a long, bum covering top. They are definitely not a good look if worn wtha short top.

MrsLevinson · 26/06/2011 18:55

YANBU. Agree that leggings are an alternative to tights. Last week I saw a a school Mum wearing slightly see through black leggings with a pair of wedges and a football top tied at the front to shorten it. She was a larger lady and I was treated to a display of camels hoof and cellulite/bulging thong when she turned round. Shock I'm not skinny myself so I always make sure my arse is well covered!

Hulababy · 26/06/2011 18:58

I would class leggings as an alternative to tights, not as an alternative to trousers.

I hate, with a passion, short tops with leggings, on children and adults alike.

missymoola · 26/06/2011 19:12

I saw a young lady recently in a short top and leggings. Bad enough but her knickers were bright pink and said 'SPANK ME' on them! You could see them a mile off.

Jellykat · 26/06/2011 19:15

YADNBU they are equivalent to footless tights.. what i don't understand is when they were around in the '80s, they were always worn under shorts/skirts etc.. what's different this time?

SquidgyBiscuits · 26/06/2011 19:20

Leggings are a godsend to me. I'm overweight, and live in them with katfan type tops. Would never wear them with either a tight top or a short top as I think both look wrong.

HidinginaHardHat · 26/06/2011 19:22

YANBU i only ever wear them when i am 100% confident my bum is covered.

I hate seeing a fat birds camel toe as i'm sat in the high street watching the world go by.
