'Tis hard for the HT, as they are not actually allowed to ask staff if they are in a union, or if they will be striking etc. Depends how militant your staff are...

Plan as if they are then be pleasantly suprised if they're not. It's the safest option I feel.

How can they know? Teaching staff have kids too so even if they are not striking they may find their own child's school is closed. Our HT is desparately trying to find out who's in and who's not, our own staff have been honest about their intentions to strike but if lots of our staff might be affected by other schools striking. We simply don't know the outcome yet.

I've heard several mums at school saying they're going to charge the PTA for the childcare bill :o might put my name on the list if they get them to agree to that!

Strikes wouldn't be effective (assuming they ever are) if you get lots of notice to re-organise your life!

The heads should know by tomorrow how many teachers in their schools are in the striking unions, and they should be able to make a decision on whether to close the school based on a numbers calculation. They won't necessarily know which teachers are in which unions, or whether individual teachers are striking or not until the day, but they will have some information. Ring your school tomorrow to see what they say.

i know, DS has not even started his nursery yet and they have already said not open due to building work, anyway... I see why its annoying. I do sometimes wish the public sector had the same customer ethos as some in the private sector........yanbu

well we have today received a list of which class teachers are on strike and asked to send children in as usual if teachers are not on the list (though since a lot of us have one child off and one not then I guess a lot of the kids will be off anyway).
