The disabled should be prepared to work for less than the minimum wage...

...according to Phillip Davies MP. It's almost as though he's implying that disabled workers should come cheap, rather like faulty goods that are sold at discount. I pity his constituents.

'Left wing hysteria now dictates that you can't even repeat what people with learning disabilities tell you if it questions their shibboleths'

According to him, people with learning difficulties told him this is what they wanted.

itisnearlysummer · 17/06/2011 21:29
Hmm

He's trying to say on Twitter that he only reiterated what "people with learning disabilities" had told him. What the fuck is he talking about?

MarioandLuigi · 17/06/2011 21:30

However the flaw in his arguement is that if people with LD are too incompetant to be paid a full wage, then how can they be able to make an informed choice on the pay they accept.

animula · 17/06/2011 21:30

Amazingly stupid.

Not only utterly disablist but ... he hasn't even grasped the basic concept of minimum wage. The clue is in the word minimum. There isn't supposed to be a less-than-minimum.

If I was a Shipley constituent right now I would be angry.

Is this really the best candidate Shipley could field? Seriou

MollysChamber · 17/06/2011 21:31

Twat.

itisnearlysummer · 17/06/2011 21:32

Exactly MarioandLuigi.

Shoesytwoesy · 17/06/2011 21:32

the bloke is a wanker and I am sure my dd would like to be productive and run the fucker over in her wheelchair,

Empusa · 17/06/2011 21:33

Christ.. his twitter feed. :(

PainSnail · 17/06/2011 21:33

This twat doesn't need to be in the Conservatives, what he wants is the Nazi party of Germany, circa 1939.

animula · 17/06/2011 21:34

ROFL.

Amazing how he managed to find lots (that is a plural he used) of people with learning disabilities who said they wanted the right to be fucked over.

Yeah right.

He means he was at dinner somewhere and holding forth and one of the guests, with a learning disability, said "Mmmm" politely, in order to avoid a scene.

Just love that he has more experience in what people with learning disabilities want than a whole load of organisations and advocacy groups.

He must have been working sooooo hard to amass all that information, all those statistics all on his ownsome.

MarioandLuigi · 17/06/2011 21:35

His previous jobs include a manager for a betting shop and store manager at ASDA - who are actually quite good at employing people with disabilities - he obviously didnt learn alot from that experience.

He has a majority of 9900, hopefully people with vote this little weasel out!

learningtofly · 17/06/2011 21:36

Minimum wage means exactly that. The minimum anyone should be paid. End of.

pingu2209 · 17/06/2011 21:36

I can't believe how disgusted I am that any person, let alone a politician, should think that. In fact, I feel really upset by it.

EdithWeston · 17/06/2011 21:39

I'm feeling sadly geeky, but I've just read this debate on Hansard.

The Bill (which failed) is a rehash of the withdrawn Chope Bill of March this year. It doesn't mention disability - that was only in the Parliamentary debate today. And actually it was a very small part of the overall debate.

Chope and Davies are mutters, and they keep presenting and re-presenting the same Bill which keeps being rejected. The Conservative Party keep repudiating it (Prisk, minister for business and enterprise, at length today) but these two keep at it.

Only 5 MPs voted for the Bill: Binley, Chope, Davies, Leigh and Nuttall. If there are any MNetters in their constituencies, can they please do something to get them deselected.

ohmyfucksy · 17/06/2011 21:45

Can someone with a Twitter account ask him what it feels like to commit political suicide?

MarioandLuigi · 17/06/2011 21:47

Email him OMF - I think we should all email him to tell him what a wanker he is (although maybe a bit more polite than that)

allosaurusrex · 17/06/2011 21:48

I can't help but wonder if he seriously lacks reasoning powers or if he is just that much of a bastard. He qualifies his suggestion by saying that he wants the option to be open, "only to those who want it". Right. Exactly how does that work? Would somebody "wanting" to work for less than minimum wage need to be certifiably learning disabled? Or could anyone "want" to work for less than minimum wage? Has he even heard of supply and demand?

Let him try supporting himself on £5 an hour.

Heard him on PM (radio 4). Apparently he visited a centre for people with learning disabilities 4 years ago and that was where real actual people told him this. Wonder if he even considered for a micro-second that if people are telling him they're desperate enough for work that they would do it for less than minimum wage that perhaps it should be made easier for them to gain access to the workforce and simplify their benefits... No. Let's just pay them peanuts. Fuck's sake.

MarioandLuigi · 17/06/2011 21:48

I hate that he has pulled out the old 'I spoke to people who have said this' excuse. He said he sat on a committee that looked into this issue - does anyone know who that committee was?

MarioandLuigi · 17/06/2011 21:54

He visited a centre 4 years ago Angry and thats what he is basing this whole bill on?

I agree - if they were at a centre they may not have had training or employment and were so desperate for something they were willing to sell themselves short. Instead of finding ways to help these people he is rubbing his hand with glee at the cheap labour.

Dick! I wonder how he would feel if it was one of his children (he has 2 boys) that was fighting for a decent job and someone suggested they get paid below the minimum.

MarioandLuigi · 17/06/2011 21:55

Actually the more I read about him, the more of a twat he sounds!

charming

mumofjay · 17/06/2011 21:57

What a complete and utter cunt! My disabled daughter and sister are worth 2 of him. I wonder if he'd be willing to accept less than minimum wage to prove a point-I'd guess not. He needs a good swift kick in the bollocks, preferably by a disabled person. Piedro boots are surprisingly painful 

Empusa · 17/06/2011 22:01

Even ignoring the obvious nastiness in his opinions on those with disabilities, this shows he hasn't the intelligence to see the problem with offering anyone less than the minimum wage.

It also shows zero awareness of just how hard it is for anyone to live on even the minimum wage, or how many employers will force the wages even lower.

Does he not realise why the minimum wage was introduced in the first place??
