The disabled should be prepared to work for less than the minimum wage...

...according to Phillip Davies MP. It's almost as though he's implying that disabled workers should come cheap, rather like faulty goods that are sold at discount. I pity his constituents.

very vile views.

do the tories have to turn everything into competitive bidding?

kidney transplants to the highest bidder, anyone?

or what about a one-handed typist half-price?

the man, his party and their politics are dangerous and i'm truly, truly scared for anyone who doesn't want to or can't play their game.

The disabled are 'by definition' less valuable workers?! Shock

There are not enough words to say what a wanker this man is.

Should we send him an email about all the things disabled people can and have achieved precisely because of their disabilities, do you think? Or would it be too long for him to read? Just in teh 20th century we could start maybe with the colourblind people who helped us win WWII and go on to Temple Grandin?

Grrrrr - I'll be back later when I'm less angry. If that happens.

It's the same sort of mindset that supports child labour.

I've tried to reply to this thread about 10 times but I keep deleting it because it's full of swears and rage.

Angry

Mr Davies, I hope you fall out of your ivory tower and land on your head.

Well I keep typing responses that just don't seem to do justice to how I feel about it. Livid, astounded, horrified just don't even come close.

This isn't an anonymous person on the internet venting nonsense, this is a member of parliament. A 'man' who, presumably, has some role in governing this country. Someone who has the power to make/influence decisions that affect every single person in this country. And this is the best he's got?!

His actual words as quoted in The Telegraph : "Given that some of those people with a learning disability clearly, by definition, can't be as productive in their work as somebody who hasn't got a disability of that nature, then it was inevitable that given that the employer was going to have to pay them both the same they were going to take on the person who was going to be more productive, less of a risk, and that was doing those people a huge disservice."

Phew! Offensive, and incorrect! Remembered this story from The Independent a while back.Differently abled (hate that phrase but it fits here) does not mean less able or less valuable.

On the plus side, he can kiss re-election goodbye.

Amy please swear all you like..

He is a twat of the highest order. Who shows such a thorough lack of knowledge or understand of disability (a section of the constsituents he is suposed to represent) that he deserves to be sat under the arse of an elephant and shat on from a very great height.

I cannot believe how cross I am about this, infact I am raging.

How dare he. I bet I could do his job better than him, so if he wants to give me a shot then I am up for it!

So whoever's been employing Stephen Hawking has been getting ripped off?

I'm not surprised at such remarks coming from a Tory, though.

At least we all know what he thinks.

I find his attitude appalling, i really was lost for words when i heard it on the radio.

I wonder if he would feel the same way , being confronted by our disabled family members and relatives, to explain face to face just why he thinks it would be justifiable to pay a lower than minimum wage for something they have no choice in?

Ffs it makes me so mad, people with disabilities seem to be the last remaining group that others feel is ok to target and take pot shots at. There are laws against racism, and laws against inciting religious hatred, but nothing to protect those who are disabled, unless you go down the harassment route, which is available for everyone so doesnt count.

Sadly this is the kind of attitude i have seen or heard of way too often, it makes me incandescent that my son will have to "prove" himself as capable as someone non disabled because he uses a wheelchair, when he is old enough to have a job.

I hope he issues an apology (not that I will accept it, but still)

Perhaps Mr. Davies should be paid a bit less, since he is clearly lacking the skills to perform his job properly and we're not getting value for money here.

Being disabled doesn't mean you should be held to lower standards, the whole 'by definition' comment is ridiculous.

itisnearlysummer · 17/06/2011 21:20

Well I've seen plenty of 'able bodied' people without learning disabilities who are "less productive" than their colleagues. Surely in a work force made up of people and not machines that is just to be expected. People do work at different levels of 'productivity'. But everybody's time is worth the same.

Lower than minimum wage.

That being the lowest amount anyone working in this country is to be paid.

Introduced to protect the vulnerable.

And he wants people to offer themselves at lower than that.

I actually can't believe just how angry I am at this.

The Tories like to pretend they've gone all nice and caring, but every so often someone like this MP comes along to remind us what they're really like. We should probably commend him for doing us all a favour...

I just honestly can't believe an MP said that. Yes, an MP! MPs who lie and cheat and steal!

I am absolutely full of rage. He is a supermassive motherfucking mouldy cunt and he should be fucking GRATEFUL that he obviously has no first hand experience of disability, physical or mental.

He has no fucking idea how hard it is to get a job in this day and age when you're "normal" (sorry I shouldn't use that term but it gets my point across) but when you have a disability it is so much harder. So I'm not worth minimum wage then? What's the alternative? If I went on benefits you wouldn't like that either.

To suggest that physically or mentally disabled people do not deserve minimum wage, to me, is inferring that we are sub human? I want to work. I enjoy working. I didn't ask to be born with MH issues. Nobody asks to be born disabled. You just do the best you can and get on with it. IT'S NOT A FUCKING LIFESTYLE CHOICE WE SHOULD BE MONETARILY PENALISED FOR!

Oh bollocks I'm ranting and raving now.

I wonder if he's on Twitter?

Yes, pointythings, it's not the first clanger a tory has dropped.

They are trying hard to come across as a bit nice and caring but....

they are not.

OK I hate the use of my term "normal" there but it's something I've been dealing with my whole life.. "I wish I was normal, why aren't I normal?". Its taken me a long time to realise that I AM normal. I am me. I only have one life. And I'm going to live it to the fullest potential. It's taken me 11 years to realise that.

Cunts like Philip Davies aren't normal.
