The price of cigarettes?

AIBU to consider this a national disgrace? I'm in an airport at the minute and they have just cheerily charged me nearly £9 for a pack of cancer sticks.
To add insult to injury, "there is a smoking area;" actually just a door leading outside. You have to pay £1 to open it.
That is taking the piss, isn't it?

Tallulah, want your emoticon, mine won't work (or I don't know how to do it, to be accurate)!

K999 · 17/06/2011 17:21

As an ardent capitalist, I would have rounded up as many smokers as possible. Asked them all for 50p each (thus saving them 50p). Would have to make sure I got at least 10 for it to make me a decent profit margin. I make £4. They save 50% of the purchase price. I pay the £1....wait for doors to open, shout to them all "quick, run now" and everyones happy. For repeat customers I would even offer a reduced price.....Grin

onagar · 17/06/2011 17:24

Those few being so unpleasant about it. Are you feeling angry because you are hungover? Smoking is not the only bad habit, but you won't see threads on here saying "it's 3pm. time to get the fags out" and when people throw up in cabs it's not because of tobacco. There's all that violence associated with drinking too. Do you also post how awful that is?

If you knew how bad you smell to non-smokers you would be embarassed, sad I stopped smoking 4 years ago, and it was the smell of other smokers that has kept me from smoking again. Its really really minging, im not being personal to you , i mean all smokers sad

That is subjective. I like the smell of smoke.

Actually, I don't much care how I smell to non-smokers- fuck 'em.

I can see that it is a pain in arse for OP, but not a national disgrace. I for one think it is great.

Actually, when I got outside, everyone else said: "Next time, just knock the door and someone will open it for you"
That's smokers for you- thoughtful and considerate..........

ZXEightyMum · 17/06/2011 17:50

Grin at Battersea OP. Knew I was spending too much time on MN.

Anyway it really is about time I gave up flying and going on holiday. Oh wait, I don't.

shudabinme · 17/06/2011 18:11

Am I the only ex-smoker who loves the smell of it on other people and hates other people being holier than thou about it? Pick pick pick, do I have a go because you drink or are fat? Loudly and in public? No, so mind yer own business....if they want to smoke, fine! Did I mention I'm an ex-smoker?

poppygolucky · 17/06/2011 18:37

Nah, I'm an ex smoker who can't be bothered with sanctimonious attitudes either. But at those prices, I'm over the moon I've quit.

NoobyNoob · 17/06/2011 18:41

Grin @ lemonadedrinker

Gotta love the 'you're a smoker so you're a mug' comments.

Yes, because we're all twats aren't we?

shudabinme · 17/06/2011 18:43

Me too, puppy just got to quit the niquitin lozenges now :-) Funny how nobody's sanctimonious about that!

DiamondDoris · 17/06/2011 19:00

There should be really nice rehab places to stay for at least a month, not too expensive where us smokers can go to kick the habit in a stress free environment. Why don't they come up with something like that? The cost of a packet of fags will not deter me, I'll just go without food Smile.

Pumpernickel10 · 17/06/2011 19:30

Hate smoking and the more the price goes up the better.

Pumpernickel10 · 17/06/2011 19:32

But I dont think your mugs it's your money so spend it as you wish, just stop whinging about the price, you like smoking to fecking cough up (pardon the pun)

You should be the next Health Minister- you have all the right qualities.

Shock they are taking advantage of your hideous addiction there OP. Thats good and proper capitalism.

Goofymum · 17/06/2011 23:36

£9 for fags is taking advantage of those with a habit and stuck in an airport with no other choice but to pay.
It's taking the piss but is not a National disgrace. What is a disgrace is the parent who smokes 20 a day but then refuses to pay £3.50 for their child to go on a school trip because they're short of money (the only trip the kids had to pay for this year). Or my smoking DH who moans when I spend £2 on a birthday card.

adamschic · 18/06/2011 00:07

Then all the addicted people need to wean themselves off nicotine, it's not difficult really. Then the state won't get the taxes so it will have to put up the price of booze, then people will wean themselves off booze, so then it will be something else. Maybe food??

LadyBeagleEyes · 18/06/2011 00:37

Tobacco is the way to go.
I switched to it years ago, I bought 50 grammes of amberleaf, filters and papers today which was just over £15. That should last me over a week.
There's no way I could afford cigarettes at the price they are, all the smokers I know smoke tobacco.

Tyr · 18/06/2011 00:44

I like Amber leaf with liquorice papers and a filter- especially first thing in the morning with my coffee.

VforViennetta · 18/06/2011 02:00

It's all mental really, If tptb were really concerned about health they would just ban them. I am a smoker but tbh if they were no longer available, I would be pissed off, but eventually meh. I wouldn't have a choice but to give up.

Actually they should just do this, lets face it it's a bad thing, worse than marijuana and alcohol, oh but wait they gain too many taxes.

I would love to see the faces of all those anti smoking lot when it all came crumbling down when smoking was no more. Lets face it, if everyone just spontaneously gave up, so many people would live longer, plus the tax take would plummet. Be smug wafters then you twats.

VforViennetta · 18/06/2011 02:07

I buy 50g of tobacco each week and filters, I have a fag making machine thing. I used to buy cigarettes each day but they got too expensive.

I always fantasize of a countrywide tobacco embargo, everyone who smokes should just stop, see how the treasury likes that. They charge us more and more to die early. Imagine if we all lived to a ripe old age, bloody chaos.

adamschic · 18/06/2011 13:30

People who smoke roll-ups are either thinking about when and where they can smoke a cig (as most smoker do) and also having to plan when they can make one. Too much effort involved.

4madboys · 18/06/2011 13:40

plan when they can make them? are you having a laugh, i smoke roll ups, only three a day? costs me no more than £5 a week and i can roll one in less than a minute, i dont have to plan when i can make one pmsl!
