The price of cigarettes?

AIBU to consider this a national disgrace? I'm in an airport at the minute and they have just cheerily charged me nearly £9 for a pack of cancer sticks.
To add insult to injury, "there is a smoking area;" actually just a door leading outside. You have to pay £1 to open it.
That is taking the piss, isn't it?

The more people that give up smoking in the Western world the heavier they push them in the third world, lets address that not people's individual right to carry out a legal want. We have the right to question why things are so expensive in the UK and were are money is going to because i doubt charging £15 a packet would mean anymore is spent on health. In fact because smoking is reducing we are now identifying that some conditions are not caused by smoking as previously thought (although some are). The area i live in has always had a high incidence of lung conditions and it is now considered to be the location rather than outside factors.

swanker · 17/06/2011 14:23

Ach, stop smoking- you'll never get into Valhalla if you carry on like that.

AuntieMonica · 17/06/2011 14:24

is it correct to say 'suck it up' in this instance Hmm Blush

but the charge to open the door is a bit much...or is it when you see the state of some of the smoking shelters?

someone has to clean that up...is the charge going towards keeping the area clean and tidy?

Birdsgottafly · 17/06/2011 14:24

Spliffs would not bring in tax but the rise of mental illness connected to the new chemically enhansed 'weed and skunk' is very high.

CrapolaDeVille · 17/06/2011 14:25

The tax isn't a reflection of how much smokers cost the NHS, it's a reflection on how stupid people are that they still continue to smoke despite the expense.

I am always mildly amused how uppity smokers get about rights....if it's your right to smoke, it's the governments right to charge you huge tax, the airport's right to charge you to smoke and my right to tell you to fuck off if you ever come and smoke near me and my dcs!!

ZXEightyMum · 17/06/2011 14:26

Valhalla is full of dogs though, isn't it? I don't want to go there, I'm allergic to the fuckers.

hiddenhome · 17/06/2011 14:26

You need an e-cigarette dahling. These are the way to go. You can 'smoke' them anywhere too Smile

No, ZX, that's Battersea. Go on, have a fag.

Smoke roll ups

expatinscotland · 17/06/2011 16:35

I'm considering buying an e-cigarette, tell me, where can I get them online?

porcamiseria · 17/06/2011 16:35

hey we pay our taxes AND we are a good soluton to the pension crisis, us smokers

I agree, but my mate got me some from the middle east recently for about £10 for 10 packs, VILE, I was dying. so back to £7 packs now :-(

serajen · 17/06/2011 16:36

Am often at airports and craving a cig, the smoking rooms are a bit legendary and dying out (no pun intended), good thing about themn is you don't need to light up, just inhale and save yourself £1, or however much it is one cig costs us these days. Am in Sweden at moment, fast running out of the damn fags and no opportunity to go hunt some down. These people will not like me in nicotine withdrawl, there will be damage! Have one for me ZX, I owe you £1!

tallulahxhunny · 17/06/2011 16:38

If you knew how bad you smell to non-smokers you would be embarassed, :( I stopped smoking 4 years ago, and it was the smell of other smokers that has kept me from smoking again. Its really really minging, im not being personal to you , i mean all smokers :(

BooyHoo · 17/06/2011 16:38

arf @ national disgrace. my word, some people's worlds are very small.

ButWhyIsTheGinGone · 17/06/2011 16:41

I think the prices of cigs are insane these days. I don't smoke but I love my wine, and if a legal, relaxing pastime I enjoyed became ridiculously expensive I would become more than a little grumpy.

Sassybeast · 17/06/2011 16:41

Shocking. Especially when you consider how much you have to pay for mouthwash to cover the stink of your rank smoker breath Wink It's a national scandal I tell ya.

serajen · 17/06/2011 16:44

we know all that, Tallula, thanks anyway

guaranteed to bring on the haters, a cig thread! [tries to insert wink emoticon]

Quenelle · 17/06/2011 16:45

Smoking Area = £1 to open outside door is hilarious Grin

Is there just a huge long drop the other side?

adamschic · 17/06/2011 16:45

Which airport is this? So you have to pay a pound to go outside for a smoke. You should think yourself lucky they even let you pay to go outside. Most british airports hit you with an enforced withdrawal and once checked in you cannot smoke until you land at your destination and get out of the doors of that airport.

Anyway it was stupid stuff like this that made me finally give up. Thank goodness I did.

dolldaggabuzzbuzz · 17/06/2011 16:49

£9 for a packet of fags???? £1 to open a frigging door????

They must think smokers are fucking stupid!!!

Oh.. wait a minute.....

mayorquimby · 17/06/2011 16:49

Good old capitalism. They'll fuck you for everything in an airport. you're trapped.

K999 · 17/06/2011 16:53

I'd pay £10 if it meant I could get outside for a fag. Grin

Not that I'm addicted or anything.

Was it £1 per person or could you rush as many folk through as possible thus reducing your liability? Wink

poppygolucky · 17/06/2011 17:06

God i'm so pleased I got pregnant: only thing that made me quit.

serajen · 17/06/2011 17:10

hear, hear, Mayor, ain't that the truth!

K999 funny mental image of us all piling on top of each other for the door opening!

tallulahxhunny · 17/06/2011 17:14

you are welcome serajen! Wink
