People are demonstating all over Spain for rights regarding health, decent wages, housing, employment etc is the mossos (police in Barcelona) response to people peacefully and legally demonstrating

I'm fucking outraged this can happen in a so called left wing democracy.

AIBU in thinking no matter what your political persuasion, you are, surely, allowed to demonstrate peacefully?

that is shocking. here, in the uk, it is a right and one i would defend to the hilt, and i am a police officer.

i have no idea what the policy or law is overseas. We are lucky in the uk. yes there is the odd case, ian tomlinson springs to mind, but brutality is not well tolerated in the police, justified use of force is, but i agree, looking at that link it is not justified.

you are allowed to demonstrate, even police are allowed to go on strike here, this however, cannot be justified.

but i agree with the right to do it. i could never join a PSU because (apart from never passing the gruelling fitness test!) i agree that people should have the right to peaceful protest - its a human right, and one which i happen to agree with.

i have to follow lawful orders.
attacking demonstrators would not be lawful imo without justification.

Black May 92 took place outside my front door, what can happen to peaceful protesters in a (so called) democracy can be an awful lot worse. People were being half beaten to death (when caught leaving the protest to get supplies) by the police even before the army was called in to machine gun them.

I personally wouldn't consider going on a march here in Italy. The police are armed and it is not unheard of for the occasional protester to get shot.

Both Spain and Italy have dictatorships in their recent history. That may or may not be connected to the sometimes heavy handed approach taken when policing protests.
