Oh wow glad I stumbled upon this thread (in a way) im currently suffering from my possibly 6th bout of tonsilitis this year (and this is by far the worst, im on every pain killer under the sun but in agony still) and was thinking of discussing tonsilectomy with my GP. Anyone got any advice?

Hiya, just wanted to add my two penceworth! I'm a theatre nurse and have assisted in loads of tonsillectomies. Been doing the job 4 years and never seen anyone die on the table. I also had my tonsils out when I was 28. I'll be honest, the recovery is pretty unpleasant, but no worse than a bad case of tonsillitis, and just think, that'll be the last time you experience that! My only advice would be to take your prescribed painkillers regularly at the max dose from day one - don't wait for it to get painful before you take them. Also gargling with saltwater a couple of times a day made a huge difference to the healing of my scars - I'd really really recommend that. Worked much better than the mouthwash I was told to use.

My ears are really really painful, I have no balance when I stand up I fall over.

Everytime I eat something comes out my nose! I leant over and blood came out my nose ewww
Well it can only get better! I am on codeine and dicloprham and also pennicilin for the infected area. Iv just had some of the mouth wash stuff which was useless.

Oooh I would love a good look.

Sounds exactly like when I had labyrinthitis. Not sure if the falling over thing normal? I would check with dr, could have inner ear infection as well? I know to expect ear pain etc.

Oh god 12 hours and I will be leaving for hosp. whats diclophram? that like diclophenac?

Im not liking this out the nose thing!! Have had vomit come out nose before but surely thats cos its coming UP. how can food be going to back of mouth and jumping up then out nose?! I have to ask on health board as am freaked out now! Poor you!!

I had my tonsils out at 22 (8 years ago) and occasionally stuff still comes down my nose but it was far far worse shortly after (I had to hold my nose to blow up a balloon as the air would just escape). I'm a dentist so I have a fair idea of the anatomy behind the area and I am assuming that it takes a while for your soft palate to adapt to having more space at the back there to seal up when you swallow.
The anaesthetic throat spray was a gem.

Oh god oh god oh god. :(

DD (8Y) having her tonsils out on wednesday. I am terrified.

She's going to be so miserable and sad and I can't bear it.

What's worse is that she keeps saying she's looking forward to going to hospital and the overnight stay, and wondering what will be on the menu that night. I've told her that she will have a sore throat like tonsillitis and may feel really rough. But I don't think she believes me. . And it's not because she gets tonsillitis lots and lots. More that she has sleep apnoea and the consultant was concerned that if she did get a bad bout of tonsillitis she could have a completely obstructed airway.

So it's not as if she's ill. She's quite perky and I have to sign consent forms for it.

I shouldn't have read this thread. Have had tonsillitis 3 times in the past 4 or 5 months and various other low level illnesses in between. It's taken a full 10 day course of antibiotics to kill it each time - although the first 2 times I only got about 3 days between the end of ABs and the start of the next infection! I've gone from being able to run 10k easily 3 times a week to struggling to do 2.5k twice a week as I just don't have an energy anymore. I've got a headache and a scratchy throat now and I'm dreading it being the tonsillitis back again

Sad

Well I chickened out of an op that involved 'the other end' so you have my sympathies. Blush

But as others have said, you will feel so much better afterwards and almost certainly probably wont die Grin

Bit of an update- blood has been coming out my ears, I can't swallow and I have no balance. Spoke to the doctor finally.

He has given me some tablets to suck which stop the dizzyness. If I'm no better tomorrow I have to go back into hospital

Dd has been in a foul mood all day screaching and making a general pain of herself. Dp messed my meds up which is what I think is causing me these problems now..

pooka please don't stress. My DD1 had her tonsils out aged 9 and it was nothing like what's described on these threads.

She was upset when she was coming round but was calm well before her memory started working again so she doesn't remember that bit.

She was eating very soon afterwards, was sick once but wasn't too distressed about it.

Her recovery was done in three or four days and she had a lovely time because she had to stay off school for a further two weeks. We had a great time.

The only time it got upsetting was when they were putting the cannula in her hand. She refused at the first appointment but the re-booked it and gave her a decent sedative and it all went fine that time.

It isn't very nice walking away and leaving your child in the anaesthetic room but you'll cope. After she's out you'll be busy keeping her entertained and before you know it she'll be discharged.
