Couldn't give a damn about the weight of the wearer, but yes, IMO it is bad manners to lunch in a bikini (in fact any swimwear, men not excluded).

But she's in Spain on holiday. And I've seen plenty of large blokes in Spanish restaurants, wearing nothing but Union Jack trunks.

The point of the piece is to 'shame' her for putting on a few pounds. Which is the kind of sneering mean spiritedness that passes for journalism in the tabloids.

One should also never "spear" a sausage like that and eat it as though you have no idea what a knife is for!

If it was a restaurant then yes, but it looked like it was outside? on holiday? so maybe beach front place? If so, I think beach wear is possibly normal. You're on the beach, there's a place to eat, you grab something and sit outside - next to the beach.

Not the same thing as walking into the Dorchester in a bikini top and thong.

Even if it's a beachside restaurant or next to a hotel pool, you should put something over it (a beach dress or something). Basic manners I would have thought.

I would avoid any restaurant with men wearing Union Jack trunks.

I agree the point of the article is to sneer, but when I saw it I just thought, cover yourself up woman while you're in a restaurant.

I live by the sea (in Europe) and I can't say I've often seen people eating out in swimwear, not even at the places that are actually on the beach. Surely being in Spain / on holiday is no good reason to ignore etiquette

Even in a beachside restaurant I think clothes are necessary. Especially given that the gentleman next to her in the picture is wearing a proper shirt.

I still say though that we wouldn't be looking at this picture and being invited to point and sneer if it was a large bloke.

Surely you wouldn't expect someone to come off the beach and get dressed just to sit at a beachside cafe/bar, have a snack and go straight back on the beach? I wouldn't

Men eating without tops also look horrible.

I think a cover up whilst eating would be a good idea, but I've got to take my hat off to her for being comfortable in her own body! I actually don't think she looks that bad and maybe it's because of her confidence.
